Standings have been updated for all divisions!

I have extensivley double-checked all standings for all players; all are (and have been) correct (This is critical as we now enter the final rounds of our 1v1 season: intensity and madness shall commence  )

Round 19 begins for Germany division.
Round 20 begins for WWII Poland, Soviet Union, World 2.1, San Francisco, Doodle Earth, and Madagascar divisions.

Standings have been updated for all divisions!

Round 20 begins for Germany division.

Round 21, the last round of 1v1 games, begins for WWII Poland, Soviet Union, World 2.1, San Francisco, Doodle Earth, and Madagascar divisions.

The standings remain tight, as they have been throughout the tournament.

We have 11 players TIED at 10 wins, 10 losses a piece, and for those players with 9, 10, or 11 wins, it could come down to this LAST game to determine whether or not you make it through among the top 32 to the best-of-7 playoffs.

Consider this, therefore, the toughest match of the season :)

I want to thank all players for their superior sportsmanship and dedication throughout this extensive tournament, which has had quite a few delays all throughout, but most of you have stuck with it and that means a lot =D>

Standings have been updated for all divisions!

Round 21 begins for Germany division.

Well, here you have it! We're approaching the final standings!

GeneralRisk has snatched the top seed #1, meaning he'll take on the #32 seed, which will surely require some sort of tie-breaker. Based on our preliminary final standings, it appears those of you with a 10-11 record may have another shot at the playoffs with a mass-tiebreaker match. Exciting 8-)

Those of you with 12 and more wins, it looks like you're safe into the next round!

But remember we still must wait for Germany to finish its last Round, and there's also still 1 game going on in the Madagascar division!

As always, these standings have been double-checked both during the update and using the Tournament Stats community-created tool.

Also, I think now's an appropriate time to comment on, in my opinion, the top 3 most impressive performances I've noted throughout the third stage, the final 7 games.
Let's take a look at some players who have improved their lot and hit some hot winning streaks and/or moved into playoff territory :D 8-)

They're not in any order, since they cannot really be compared since each player had different opponents or a different order in which they faced opponents, but I'm just sharing what I've noticed throughout all these updates,

The Top 3 Most Impressive Performances of Stage III

  • In the Madagascar division, murphy16 was in 45th place, just 11 away from last, after Stage II, but in Stage III has won 6 of his 7 games and now sealed a playoff berth, approximately around the #22 seed! Quite some upward mobility there!
  • Both cookie0117 and IcePack were at 6 and 8 after Round 14, but they've both managed to move into favorable territory; cookie won 6 games, and IcePack has won 5, and is playing in his last game at the moment.
  • chopsiu began with a 5 wins, 9 losses record after Stage 2, way down in 49th place, 17 places away from the lowest playoff seed.
But he's triumphed in 5 of his final 7 games on the San Fran map, and now he's got one last shot for the playoffs.

By no means are these all the most impressive performances; take a look for yourself, the standings after Stage III look much, much different than from after Stage I.
Of course, we'll credit those in the top 10 region, who have consistently stuck with the tournament and managed to win 13 to 15 games.

All around, thanks to everyone again for your commitment. It's kept this tournament alive! Hopefully we'll finish up in the next month or two ;)

Postby WorldCup4James on Tue Jan 17, 2012 11:18 am

That's it, all 21 games in each division have now finished, and we are all set to begin the Tie-Breakers and Playoffs!

Standings Board

Interestingly, we have 11 players tied with 10 wins and 11 losses, and only 3 seeds available for them (#30, 31, 32). This means we will have tie-breakers on the Classic map to determine the three players advancing to the playoffs. Details on this will follow shortly.

For now, here's the list of the playoffs seeds that have been secured, and the matchups that are set in stone:

Playoffs

Tie-Breakers
Game A: Game 10461653
Game B: Game 10461654
Game C: Game 10461656

Seed-breaker game:

TBD (Winner of Game A vs. Winner of Game B).

11 players were tied with 10 wins, 11 losses. The tie-breaker format, proposed by the tournament organizer and agreed upon by a majority of the tied players, includes 2 4-player Standard games and 1 3-player Standard game (all games on the Classic map). The winner of each game advances to the Playoffs (since there are 3 seeds). The winner of the 3-player game receives the #32 seed, and the two winners of the 4-player games play 1, 1v1 game to determine the #30 and #31 seeds.

The Playoffs have begun! The distinguished, top 32 players have qualified for this horrifyingly rigorous best-of-7 1v1 series, and only 1 will prevail! Will it be the number one seed, GeneralRisk? Or will we find ourselves an underdog who will snatch the victory for himself?

Click here for the list of all Playoff matchups!

Here's the format for the Round of 32:

I bid you all good luck: superior strategy, incredible intensity cubes, as you begin in our adventure to eliminate the remaining 32 players and find our champion!

March 5 Update

Since we're about a month into the playoffs, it's time for an update on how thing are going in our Round of 32.

We're just about wrapping up our first stage (Round of 32): 11 of the 16 1v1 series have completed play. I'm continuing to update the tournament rapidly, and I expect our Round of 16 will begin towards the end of this month.

Finally!
The first round of our playoffs, the Round of 32, has finished, and we've seen quite a few upsets.

The lowest seed, #32, rdunn13 slid past powerhouse GeneralRisk, the number one seed in the tournament, after triumphing in a thrilling game 7 on World 2.1

Similarly, Jinks, number 22 seed, steamrolled past number 11 seed farinelli, winning 4 straight games.

These were just a few top performances that caught my eye; there certainly were plenty others ;)

All the action has now resulted in 8 new groups of 2 players each, ranked by seed again. Here they are...

Yes, cpmucha was a very worthy opponent who just as easily deserved that spot in the Quarterfinals (round of 8   ). Came down to who could truly capitalize on good Intensity cubes and good drops, and who could bounce back from bad intensity cubes and an unlucky drop.

Indeed it is! ;)

Onward we march, to the Quarterfinals!

The Round of 16 saw deanof7, the #2 seed and now the best seed remaining in the tournament, finally put down rdunn13, who, as underdog, heroically took out the #1 seed in the first round of the playoffs.

Jinks, the #22 seed, and shoop76 both surprised expectations, as they defeated their respective higher-ranked opponents by great margins: 4 games to 1. Similarly, shoop76 koontz1973 surprisingly topped spartacus65, but only narrowly in the seventh game.

These were among the most unique performances witnessed in the Round of 16. Three of the eight matchups resulted in the underdog advancing! This leaves an interesting field of 8 players for the Quarterfinals.

All the action has now resulted in 4 new groups of 2 players each, ranked by seed again. Here they are...

Indeed, your last game just now finished, I had not forgotten about it, and so we are ready to continue into the Semis!

Distinguished Final Four Competitors

show: Semi Finalists

It's perhaps the most trying test of a knockout competition: a point of pure exhaustion and burdening pressure; one leg away from the Final. Losing at such a pivotal moment means losing it all, leaving the triumphs of the Quarterfinals, Rounds of 16 and 32, an the Round-Robbin for naught. Our competitors can taste victory but have yet another hurdle ahead of them!

4 are in, but only 2 move on to the Championship!

Here are the two matchups, generated by player seeds of course from the round-robin stage:

deanof7 vs. xman515: The Cup Championship is here!

Postby WorldCup4James on Tue Jul 24, 2012 10:09 am

520 days, 748,800 minutes, 12,480 hours, 44,928,000 seconds since the start of Round 1, it is my great privilege to announce that our esteemed group of 56 has now been whittled down to the elite final two!

(Over microphone)

My friends...ends...nds...s...the Cup Championship is upon us...pon us...us.

In a few short days, it will be a great honor to write upon this magnificent trophy...ophy...phy...the name of our champion, be it our number 2 seeds deanof7...eanof7...of7...7...or the number 7 seed, xman5151...man5151...5151...51...

Okay, enough with the echoing! ;) As usual, our final two warriors will labor through at least four ferocious fights, perhaps they'll even endure the maximum seven encounters, before we find our victor.

A look at the competitors

  • deanof7 placed second throughout the round-robin phase with 15 wins, 6 losses record (incidentally, the same number of wins as first place), and eased through the knock-outs. His better seed gives him first map choice, as well...

  • xman5151 finished with 2 fewer wins during round-robin, but, as a Colonel, has the leg up on both rank and number of games completed...

Both are overqualified for the medal, but they have not yet faced the stiffest competition yet: each other.

I'll be sitting back and enjoying these games with an ice-cold cola.

The Cup Championship hereby commences!

It is my privilege and absolute thrill (as well as relief ;) ) to announce our champion of the WC4J Cup (as I like to call it now :D ). It took six strenuous matches between the overqualified finalists deanof7 and xman5151.

The final of a nineteen month tournament is no small deal, and thus:

It is my great honor to announce deanof7 as champion of the WC4J Cup! =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Applause as well for our close second xman5151! =D> =D>

With this, I suppose we can call it the end of an era. After all, signups began January 2011, just at the onset of "Arab spring", before South Sudan was even a country, before the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, and, of course, in a time when Bin Laden was still elusive and a seemingly impossible catch. Not to mention, I do not like a single one of these maps for 1v1 play anymore, I must confess. 8-[

Winning such a tournament, even making it to the Finals, required inordinate amounts of, not only patience with the pace of play (my fault ;) ), but massive amounts of consistency. To be able to win, win, and win again over 566 days on seven of the most unpredictable maps is impressive! For that, you can't just say it's the dice that sent you to the trophy...

Looking back, it appears Madagascar and San Francisco together were the most favored maps. 110 games took place on each. Not surprisingly for some, World 2.1 only saw 100 games, the fewest amount considering all seven maps.

I'd like to thank every player that was a part of this tournament, for committing to your games, round after round. Also, a big thanks for the players that stepped in when someone had to leave; those are the players who ensured the survival of the tournament. A couple of you actually improved your predecessor's record and made it to the Playoffs, which was cool.

As always, I had no issues with sportsmanship at all (a remarkable feat of mankind  ), granting all of you free passes, so to speak, to all my future tournaments. I guarantee they won't take as long. ;)

Well, until the next tourney, I suppose!

Your host,
James :D
