But Saddam Hussein needed to be stopped. The UN placed 17 sanctions on Iraq!!! 17!!! none of them did anything. He did not submit to the UN, or the inspectors. We could not allow a mad man like Saddam to rule any longer... I do think that the war was rushed, and done poorly. I also think that the claims of nuclear weapons should've been further investigated before being tossed around so readily by the Bush administration. But Saddam was bluffing like he had them, no one could deny that. If he had simply submitted just a little I think the whole war could've been avoided.

That shows how much you know. There were UN weapon inspectors in Iraq before US invaded. Hans Blix? Remember him? Him and his team were conducting investigations witin Iraq, but then the US told him to leave so they could invade before he finished his investigations. Blame the USA for the UN not being ablet o funtion properly with Iraq. The USA do not know diplomacy. Look at the 1979 hostage crisis. 444 days that went on for. The UK used diplomacy, and got their hostages released in 15 days.

True, I grew up with a conservative back ground, and I grew up, learned about politics, am currently attending one of the most liberal universities in the United States, and listen everyday to why the liberals are right and conservatives are wrong. I see evidence on both sides of the argument, but still choose to be conservative...

Well, after I read that deeply flawed (albeit long and thought out) argument for war, I was read to write an equally long and decidedly more logical response. It looks like backglass beat me to it.

However, there are still some points to be made.

1: There was no justification for attacking Saddam Hussein. Since the pre-war propaganda rush, the administrtion has changed its excuse for attacking several times. First it told us Saddam had "weapons of mass destruction." We didn't wait for Blix and his team to find them, we went ahead and bombed the shit out of Baghdad and landed our troops anyway. The reason? There were no WMD in Iraq, and we needed to be embeded there with retreat safely not an option when that fact was revealed. Later, Bush claimed that we attacked because Saddam was "harboring and aiding terrorists." Also complete bullshit. Terrorism in Iraq only started to blossom after, and as a response to, our invasion.

2: Why Iraq? Fo Sho claims that we attacked Iraq because Saddam presented a threat. However, if we are now changing our reason for attacking (as we have done three times already), we're going to need to look at it from another angle. When it comes down to it, Saddam was not very dangerous anymore. Yes, he killed a lot of people in the '80s. Yes, his regime was totalitarian and cruel. But he didn't have any WMD, he didn't have the intent to build them, and his country was collapsing from the intense pressure of U.S. sanctions.
There are, and were at the time of attack, two global powers that present far more danger to world, and, in one case, to U.S. safety. I am talking about Israel and Iran. Although Israel is the most powerful of the two, attacking them is, of course, out of the question. Israel has been since its creation a staunch ally of the U.S. The relationship goes two ways. Despite Israel's terrible record when it comes to the treatment of their Muslim neighbors, there is no chance that we would attack them. Maybe because we share their anti-Muslim views? Hmm, that justcouldn't be it, could it?

There are some key differences between Iran and Israel that make it probable that we will attack Iran soon. For one, their president is an anti-American loony who might try to attack us. And he's trying to build nuclear weapons. Oh yeah, one more thing: Iranians are Muslims.

In modern day America that alone pretty much justifies attack. We have become an anti-Muslim nation.
