I don't know? I know for a fact Canada doesn't have many ships, and like, only 3 submarines! Maybe if we stopped spending all our money on Gourmet Peanut Butter...greenoaks wrote:why are we asking Africa to save our souls and ships ?TheForgivenOne wrote:I always thought it was, you know, Save Our Souls.ask me2 wrote:I have I problem with the name of the organization, SOS Africa? SOS was chosen as the Universal Distress Call because it's the simplest sequence of characters in Morse Code to remember.... three dots, three dashes, three dots.TheForgivenOne wrote:I always thought it was, you know, Save Our Souls.ask me2 wrote:I have I problem with the name of the organization, SOS Africa? Various acronyms have been applied to it after the fact, including Save Our Souls, but they are not the reason those letters were chosen.

There are a lot of companies like that that had street vendors in London last time I went home. Always with the hard sell, always pissed me off.greenoaks wrote:i use to work for a company that raised money for charities and that company kept between 40 and 60%.

Hello Matt/Tactician,
I've recently read about your organization and find it laudable how you've taken first hand experience and attempted to construct an organization to aid in the problems you've witnessed at a level grander than possible at a personal level. The work of NGOs in developing countries is something that has interested me greatly, which is why I've decided to make this request:
I am a senior in college with an (hopefully!) upcoming degree in the fields of International Politics and Economics. For my thesis I have been researching the "Effects and Desirability of International NGOs on Educational Systems in Developing Countries". After spending a month in Peru working with an American NGO attempting to do just that, I've come to several initial conclusions.
Far be it from me to see this as a freak coincidence, I noticed the conquer club fundraiser for your organization, and though I haven't frequented the site in many months, it spurred me to come here and check this out.
From my experiences any NGO founder, co- or otherwise, is swamped with work at a near-constant level. However, I would very much appreciate a few minutes of your time to talk about your goals, tribulations, and experiences working for SOS Africa. If this is something at all feasible for you, please do let me know and I'd love to get some information from you. Separate from the ConquerClub forums, of course!
I'm not sure if this is the best medium to attempt to reach out to you, so I am also sending this letter to your private messages and to that e-mail address I saw on the first page of this forum. Thank you so much for your time.
Truly,
Ryan

Re: SOS Africa Charity Drive, plus NEW Reward Map
Ahoy everyone!
It is great to see that we are getting closer and closer to our goal! I think it is well within reach now...just need another £81, or about another ~ $130.00 USD.
Here's hoping for a final push, so we can all have our reward map, but more importantly, so we can meet our target goal of funding Kelebogile's education for a FULL Year!
Thanks to all those who have donated, and all those who have supported the Drive with all their goodwill as well.

Yes, the conclusion will have to wait for Andy's return tomorrow. But I must say a big thank you to KingRat and everyone else who contributed to SOS Africa. This is a remarkable achievement for our community!

"Barsted"? If you're going to insult yourself, Genaraln7, do it right. I will not tolerate such poor insults in this thread!

Is there a usergroup for SOS Africa? For sharing info, planning activity & gathering a group of supporters? If there is, let me know about it. If there isn’t, maybe Tactician can set one up?

Re: SOS Africa Charity Drive, plus NEW Reward Map
Yowza, yowza, yowza!
I'm out of the office for a day and I come back and we've reach 100+ % of our goal! It is really great to see that our Community turned out to support this cause---either through direct donations or simply good will toward the project and endeavor.
Tactician / Matt will provide us with updates about Kelebogile, so we can follow her progress throughout the year as well! I'll probably post about them in this topic when they come in!
The JustGiving widget will come down in a couple of days. We'll leave it up incase anyone else feels the desire to donate extra, and to allow those who log into more sporadically to see we did indeed reach our goal!
And lastly, the Reward Map [Africa II] is LIVE (BETA)! I think it is definitely safe to say that our Community earned it! So start up a game!
Thanks once again to everyone. Here's to making a difference, even if it is only a small one. See you on the battlefield!
Happy CCing,

I don't see why you're making such a huge fuss about the banner. It's not in the way at all, and after a while, it becomes part of the background and easy to ignore. Personally, I think it's great that a gaming site is taking the initiative to raise money for charity.
