Basically all of the runner-ups from the Fundraising round of both parties are lumped into one Independent party for the Primary round.

Players in the Independent primary will play each other on their platforms to gain delegates.

If the winner of the Independent primary has more delegates than either the Democratic or Republican candidate, then it will be a 3 way race for the General Elections. Otherwise it will just be Dem v Rep.

I've updated the text for these sections to make this clearer (hopefully).

sounds good...I'd rather run as an independent, but (like in real life) that's a much tougher way to win office
