Is this legal?
My college started a palm swipe program to access the dining halls as of recently to replace to old method of swiping your student id. They say that its going to be mandatory soon however I dont think they can legally force me to register my palm print. What do you guys think?

I'm legally required to register my fingerprints with the US government every time I visit. So yeah- probably legal.

Besides, they can surely tell you that if you don't want to have your palm swiped, don't go in the hall, amirite?
Also, corporations and the government have more intel about you than we care to admit. And I've never posted in a conspiracy thread on this site.

Might depend on if its a private or public college, but my guess is its legal. My guess is also that various entities will sue.. so you are bound to find out

Call the ACLU; they know what to do.
At the very least, they'll probably inform you better than us.

They claim that it is to save money from people using other people ids to 'steal food' and that the university losees $4100 a year because of this, which probably would happen if they didnt overcharge for everything under the sun. I guess it never occured to them to have the cashiers look at the card to see if it matches the persons face, let alone that installing the system will cost 5k minimum and up to 15k. Its beyond asinine, especially for a public institution.

Re: Is this legal?
most likely the cashier will be phased out, thus imagine the money they believe they will be saving in the long run.

Re: Is this legal?
Are you sure your numbers are right? $4,100 or $41,000 a year? Even if your numbers are right $4,100 is $11 and change each day of the year. I am sure they wouldn't mind if you dropped an extra 10 each day to make up for it. If the new system saves them the whole $4,100 a year is will take just over a year to recoup the expense. I think it is a good move.Crazyirishman wrote:They claim that it is to save money from people using other people ids to 'steal food' and that the university losees $4100 a year because of this, which probably would happen if they didnt overcharge for everything under the sun. As far a legal you probably signed a lot of papers when you enrolled and I am sure one of them would cover this new system.

May we ask which school this is? Just out of curiosity. This seems like something my school would do.

Also the $5,000 to $15,000 for a computerized print scanner sounds amazingly low.

Re: Is this legal?
And then there are maintenance costs, costs for scanning every student's palm, complaints along the lines of "WHY THE f*ck ISN'T THIS PIECE OF SHIT WORKING!?" whenever the scanner is too dirty to read anything properly. That's just off the top of my head.neanderpaul14 wrote:Also the $5,000 to $15,000 for a computerized print scanner sounds amazingly low.Evil Semp wrote:Are you sure your numbers are right? $4,100 or $41,000 a year? It seems likely that someone in the university hierarchy has invested money in a company that produces, installs and/or maintains scanners.

Re: Is this legal?
I had the same dilemma when my work required my fingerprints to punch in to the new time clock system back in around 1999. At first I just asked the boss about it a little bit and asked if there were any alternatives for people who did not wish to participate. Immediately and publicly, the boss man accused me of wearing a tin foil hat and fearing that next the corporation will want to put a microchip in my wrist. (Only later when I had his job did I realize he was coached to say these things, preferably in front of other new recruits.) I made a big stink about it and despite my boss doing everything he could to "legally" dissuade me from going to my union rep over it, the union got me a 6 digit punch in code. Everybody was jealous!Crazyirishman wrote:My college started a palm swipe program to access the dining halls as of recently to replace to old method of swiping your student id. I'm betting you don't have a union, but I bet you have something close. The issue of security is going to trump your privacy at all turns, but if you are serious about your privacy be sure not to let anyone push you around, because once they see you can be pushed around you aren't going to make it onto the list of anyone who can get you some kind of alternative. You can always threaten to get an education, and get your food, somewhere else. But you gotta be prepared to go all the way, there is no half assing it here, if you want results anyways.

pretty sure I oppose the conflict of interest with public unions.
I think my union rips me off sometimes and overall I would say of my union that sometime it has served my interest, sometimes it costs me a lot of money for nothing.

Re: Is this legal?
Just a quick recap it is $4,100 not $41,000, so if the cashier would just look at the card and see if it matches the face then there would be no problem. Also the schools memorial union doesn't even have the machines installed, and they bring in much more revenue/ would be easier to steal from, which makes the whole thing fuckin retarded. My school is the University of Maine. And yes the whole purpose of this is because I think it violates my right to privacy. Also it occurred to me that the palm scanner are probably a great way to spread sickness when winter comes around, especially since they won't clean it after every use, so I think that goes in my favor as well

The University of Maine is a public school, which would mean this is a violation of your right to privacy.
