You're missing the point. It may be obvious to English speakers, but not to those who speak English as a SECOND language, especially such as the large Dutch community. All Michael is asking for is a list of words in the forum guidelines that users can be directed to, IF they are having to be warned for bigoted language.jefjef wrote:Thats bs thinking and a cop out. In this day and age it's pretty obvious what terms are commonly and specifically used as BLATANT bigoted slurs and racism... Sure there are few (very few) instances where a couple of those words have a dual meaning - that is where intent/use comes into play and to be determined but to pretend when someone says "Your a f**" that they are calling you a pile of twigs or a cigarette is just bs.But they don't know what will cross the line again. There is no list of banned terms or offensive words. If warned should a user disregard game chat all together so to not cross an imaginary wavy line?
There are a lot of things you can say in chat to get people going without resorting to bigotry or racism. I and others do it all the time. It isn't that hard to figure out.
This is a private business and CC does not want the blatant commonly used slurs on their site. I and many others do not blame them. Why would you even support or want slurs to be used?

Re: Stop banning specific words in game chat
If English is his second language, it is unlikely he would know all that many slurs. I have an intermediate skill in Spanish and I only know a handful of profanities and I know exactly what each of them mean and if I was only able to communicate in Spanish on this site I would be able to avoid bigoted words by knowing what the rules have defined as bigotry.
Re: Stop banning specific words in game chat
The excuse-making in favor of inconsistency in this thread is incredible. I really don't understand why anyone would favor inconsistency in this regard. Either don't have ANY words that are banned or make a freaking list of them so that the list can be explicitly placed in the rules. Either situation would be fine, but the current situation simply isn't.

Re: Stop banning specific words in game chat
Oh lol, that's not true. I know way too many slurs, because I chat and post on English speaking forums. This probably differs per non-native speaker (of English), but I know plenty of them. I just don't know exactly which I can say without me getting into trouble and which ones do no harm.Dibbun wrote:If English is his second language, it is unlikely he would know all that many slurs.
Especially because some slurs are, when translated in Dutch, laughable in my country. And vice versa, some words are said every day on this forum, but you better not say that in the Netherlands. There's no need to explain which words they are, but you get the point. The English speaking culture isn't the only one out there. I'm willing to adapt, but I didn't learn what slurs to use and not to use when I went through high school.
Edit: Nice to have this discussion in two different places of the forum.

Re: Stop banning specific words in game chat
Are you kidding? profanities are one of the first things you learn in a foreign language. Right after hello, goodbye and 'my name is', theres f*ck, bitch, slut, cock, and maybe even a cunt. Even if you don't know the language chances are you know what some of the slurs in that language mean.Dibbun wrote:If English is his second language, it is unlikely he would know all that many slurs. Re: Stop banning specific words in game chat
True but CC is an English based site and the vast majority speak English. The English speaking culture isn't the only one out there.
It's pretty obvious which words and how they're used are widely recognized as bigotry/racism. Common sense.I just don't know exactly which I can say without me getting into trouble and which ones do no harm.
Now if CC puts out your list of banned words then those in UK would be guilty anytime they use a certain word when honestly referring to a pile of twigs, meatballs or a cigarette. If that happens would you then show up and argue that the offending word shouldn't be on the "list"?
This post was made by jefjef who should be on your ignore list.

I see where he is going with this
those words, more then half the time when people say something they dont mean the real thing
when people tell call me things like (i will leave it out unless i get an OK from a mod) they dont mean im gay they just say it.

The thing I find most offensive is having my freedom of speech restricted.
There should be no chat restrictions at all.

Freedom of speech? Where did you get the idea you have a right to freedom of speech on the internet?Woltato wrote:The thing I find most offensive is having my freedom of speech restricted.

Yes you're right. You can't even write the word "cock" on yahoo without a load of ******'s appearing over it.Woodruff wrote:Freedom of speech? Re: Stop banning specific words in game chat
jefjef, you and I both know that a word, in itself, is not racist or bigoted.
Are black rappers racist for using the word "nigga" in their songs?
What about gays that use the term "faggot" to mean something other than a homophobic slur (I know gays that do it)?
EVERYTHING is in the context that the word is used. f*ck, I can make the word "herpaderpasaurus" incredibly racist AND bigoted, yet if I said it by itself, you wouldn't think anything of it.
Never mind that this is the internet and that children have parents (this website shouldn't have to act like children's parents).

As true as that may be, there will always be some parents and some children that defy it.Army of GOD wrote:<Insert other rants about how AoG should be the prime example here>

Even besides that, some people simply don't want to read vile things. Should it have to be banned on a word by word basis? No. Should people be smart enough to use common sense and common courtesy on the internet? Yes.
However as you all see, many things aren't as they should be.

Common sense and courtesy are very subjective terms blake. I know people who would hate me for life if I called them a flaming cunt, and there are others who would laugh at it.blakebowling wrote:As true as that may be, there will always be some parents and some children that defy it.Army of GOD wrote:<Insert other rants about how AoG should be the prime example here>

There are always going to be inconsistencies because of the subjectivity of the subject matter. In my opinion, the only non-hypocritical stances are either ban none of it or ban all of it.

I certainly agree that this website shouldn't HAVE to act like children's parents. However, if the owner of the website deems that it's advantageous for him to do so, then there's no reason why it shouldn't censor words or terms either.Army of GOD wrote:Never mind that this is the internet and that children have parents (this website shouldn't have to act like children's parents).

And by none of it, I mean we remove game chat altogether. Offensive words are so subjective that it'll be impossible to eliminate a finite amount of words and keep people unoffended.
