Collections are #1 on the priority list, as they'll fix most of R&C's bloat by needing to copy entire territory lists 20-something times. I don't know how much Lack is intending to do XML-wise, but there are other things at #2 and #3.

I could be mistaken, but I would expect it to define a set of territories as a collection and then allow you to stick <requirement> and <bonus> tags within, or some equivalent, to define how many of each you would need for each bonus. I could of course be wrong, but it's what would make the most sense to me.

Hi Tacktic,

Just out of curiosity, is there any reason that the texture of the playable area is so plain? I know it is a bit late in the day for bringing up graphical concerns but it just caught my eye that the playable area is a little to plain compared to the rest of the map.

Cheers,

The geographic area being as plain as it is is deliberate. I moved away from glitz on that section of the map as I realized how cramped it was going to be generally speaking. I kept all the visual flair for sections that could actually justify it, and in the name of continuing clarity I also shied away from an "old TV blur" effect I had bandied about mentally early on.

Good news is that the code for this map is the next thing on Lack's to-do list. Bad news is that it's probably still another 6 months away.

Is there any chance that Lack has provided the mods/volunteers with any updates on the ETA of the XML updates? I'm hoping 5 months will be long enough for R&C to have been sitting in limbo waiting :)

Nothing, I'm afraid. Besides lack, only Andy knows what's on lack's to-do list. We rarely get advance notice of anything, and if we do, it's not that far in advance.

Any chance of Andy dropping by and commenting? :) I know I'm being impatient, but I've been following this map for a year and a half (or has it been longer?) and I'm really hoping it'll get released before my premium runs out in a couple months so that I'll have a chance to play some speed games since I can't commit to casual games at this point.

Obviously I'm not Andy, but I confirm to you that this update is 100% on Lack to-do list. We had a chat the other day exactly about this. Unfortunately right now is not possible for me to say you when this changes will come...don't forget the foundry is just a part of the site, Lack hasn't just a single wish list to read. :P

I'm confused... when TaCKtiX said he could confirm that XML was 'the next on the update list', was he referring to the main update list (ie. Lack is currently working on the code) or was the list he referring to just the foundry wishlist and hence it could be done after several other gameplay/community/site updates?

The next update is going to be Foundry-related, but sadly (for me, personally, not CC as a whole, mind you) XML is not it. In all likelihood XML is right after it, but we're still waiting.

Unfortunately I suspect you're not going to be so far off DiM. Updates around here for the site ususally happen around once every 3-4 months. Since we're already in August without the non-XML update, our best case scenario for the XML is gonna be Christmas. Christmas is, of course, assuming we all get really lucky and we all know what happens when you assume... :P

I disagree. Our best case scenario is that someone invests a lot of money in CC so the site can contract a ton of web programmers to work in the updates ;)

Funny thing is that there's been groups of people who have gotten together and offered to pay for a web developer to put in features that they wanted and it still went nowhere. From what I understand it's not so much a money issue as a Lack finding the time to look for a good and reliable web developer. Rumour has it that there's been at least two, maybe three, attempts and they've all bailed rather quickly on us :(

posted late 2010?

sadly i remember the early versions of this map being made just before i took a break from the site, about 2 years ago. i allready knew the map would be impossable (but fun) under the current XML. i also saw some other maps that would have a nice gameplay, but were limited by XML that were under development. Sadly, no significant XML chances have been made in nearly 3 years. I really hope for some updates, however small, to open up new gameplay. There have been a lot of good suggestions allready.

I'd say, whenever you DO update the XML, make sure you do it big and give us at least 5 new features to play with. we deserved it for waiting this long.

Re: Research & Conquer [3 Mar 2011] (Version 10 in P1 & P61)

Postby OliverFA on Fri Jul 29, 2011 1:06 pm

For the record: There is a way to do the map with the current XML but it involves a significant lower granularity. What do I mean? The initial idea was to implement the Secret Conscription and Open Conscription technologies with granularity 1. Meaning that for Open Conscription the player would get 1 extra army each territory. A compromise was made to reduce the XML size and optimize loading speed. This compromise was to implement it each 6 territories. It seems that this compromise could work (not 100% sure). But just at that time we received word that the XML collections update was about to arrive. So the map development halted to wait for that update.

I understand that there are a lot of things to do and so few resources for doing it. So I don't complain for the long time this update is taking. Instead of that, I wonder if we could go forward with the granularity 6 version and implement a granularity 1 version once the XML collections update finally appears, just like Conquer Man was optimized when an update came.
