Re: What makes a player good?
I am not implying that math has nothing to do with the dynamics of the game since statistics is in the realm of mathematics. What I am debating is that you need to be any kind of "math brain" to be good at this game. I know some people who are very weak at math who are quite good at this game. Statistical analysis is really all based on common sense which MOST people are born with. I would say the game is based on a combination of geometry and statistics, two relatively basic areas of math. It's all in the details/being careful that an advantage can be had.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, Funky.
It's just that, from those 2 quotes of yours, you kinda made it seem like CC was as complex as a game of tic-tac-toe, so I wondered how much of the iceberg you were seeing. That's all.

Np Rodion. I never meant to imply that the game was not complex by any means. If that was true I should be a lot better at it
. I was just saying I don't think its very mathematically complex. Phew, its refreshing to have a discussion with someone without the low blows. Much appreciated,
Funky

Yes, it's true that you don't necessarily need a math brain to be good at this game, but maybe there are differences in the speed at which you pick up on things. For example, some of the maps that are coming out have "optimal" strategies that you use to play them. Conquest maps in particular, as well as certain maps with set starting positions (Treasures of the Galapagos, Route 66, etc.) that have something of accepted strategy. Someone more mathematically inclined may be able to pick up on the strategy through fewer games than someone not as numbers oriented. However, in the long run, both should do about the same, keeping all other things equal.Funkyterrance wrote:I am not implying that math has nothing to do with the dynamics of the game since statistics is in the realm of mathematics. Re: What makes a player good?
I don't see it that way at all. Dice have messed me up as much as the next guy, and I have gone on great runs as well. So, I don't dissagree with the fact that there is some luck involved, but you are putting too much into the luck. Because the luck is the same for everyone, it comes down more to how you play the game. The way you put it, you're saying that 90% of the games you have played were decided only because of the dice/cards?gannable wrote:CC is mostly luck
90% dice/timing of cards
10% making the right moves. this part isn't that difficult after doing some analysis.
game's not that complicated
I know there's people who want everyone to believe they're a genius because they have a nice track record in CC but in reality it's a pretty simple strategy game.

Re: What makes a player good?
One of the best play I ever played with was Backside. Everything was weighted using math. Specially when you play flat rate. I don't see how someone can argue that math/logic isn't involved in this game. Some of the best players can see a drop and know exactly what to do. Obviously this is a game of dice but that is part of the statistics. Pretty much agree with everything Rod has said and obviously Rod is a good player

Re: What makes a player good?
Darth, I think he is saying exactly that. There are people on this site that have been playing so long that they basically know EVERYTHING about it and therefore have reached a plateau so to speak. So, if you fit any number of these people against each other it really does come down to the luck aspects of the game (cards, dice, drop). I think it is big of him to admit that luck has a huge amount to do with wins once everyone has the same amount of knowledge. It's getting to that point of experience that I admire. Some people may reach this level faster than others but does it really matter?
Nola,
Nobody ever said that math wasn't involved...
Do some people just read like every third word of posts or something?

Re: What makes a player good?
2/3 of them are about me and I would think most assume i have their pws and sit their accounts from time to time. Beyond that i feel guilty because i am guilty of playing the games you say i am playingjefjef wrote:Free style Oasis quads, with low rank partners and passwords is a combination of several peoples strategies... No I actually think you are lucky to have ever been close to getting brig and you have only got close because you regularly team with a sargent, yes i say this knowing you will bring your win record vs me as the next part of your argument...but you must remember a decent amount of those games were played when I sucked and didnt take time to make good moves. Anyway feel free to say you are good enough to make brig all you want but until you have talk is pointless.ljex wrote:2) Clearly i was exaggeration, but I believe you have said you would get brig if not for your awful random

Now you are assuming things, just because i am not a mod does not mean that my above statement is invalid. I still believe that if you report me (which i know you can) that i will be found innocentYour name isn't green.ljex wrote:3) Jefjef I think i know the rules of the forum, you are more than welcome to report any post I have made and we will see what comes of it
playing people half my points is worse for me than playing people with the same points as me, because then i lose more points than i win and they are still good enough to win games. Anyway all of my sequential games are for tournaments or clan so its not like i get to choose my opponents in those. Beyond that there are not many people on this site who are more than half my points so sometimes it is hard to face them as opponents. Besides score does not equal skill we all know that...Are they half your points?ljex wrote:4) Wait i dont play sequential vs viable opponents? just because it is the internet you are not prohibited from making logical argumentsThis is the internet. Not rl.ljex wrote:5) logical argument for the win

Re: What makes a player good?
Yea this is like dueling threads going on here.
At any rate, maybe I will try some number crunching in some of my games and see how it works. I'm not against trying something new

Re: What makes a player good?
It's always good to crunch numbers. I remember this triples game that was pretty important and I spent hours discussing with one of my teammates about what to do before starting the turn, breaking every possibility down.We basically had decide if we'd attempt to kill someone or just let him isolated in part of the map (and a failure could cost us the game). There were 4 possible paths, each with strengths and weaknesses: the beginning of the path was the same for all 4, but we soon had to bifurcate and thus a plan had to be chosen. The interesting thing is that each dice roll (before bifurcating) changed the odds of each path in such a way that getting a 0-2 roll right before picking a path could probably force us into giving up that path and taking a less risky one.Funkyterrance wrote:Yea this is like dueling threads going on here.

The tip I give you is that you keep huge analyses for the really meaningful games, otherwise it can get quite stressful.

Lol, thanks for the tip, I like to avoid stress.
Your description of that one game reminds me of how awesome this game can be, sounds like that was a really fun one.

Maybe we should talk about the effects of paranoid schizophrenia and how that makes you a good player? Or would it be you and several of your personalities?

I feel like bifurcating

Highest position #5 (18 Nov 2010) General 4,380pts (11 Dec 2010)

what makes a player good?
well since i notice the same players/teams repeatedly getting the dice in their favor (attack and defend) I would have to say a good dice script is the main qualification.
thats about the only thing that matters
