Talkative players
It's really surprising to me how few people post/respond to posts in the game chat. At the beginning of each game, I usually say something like "good luck!" and only get a response about 50% of the time. Also, I avoid team games now because I hardly ever get teammates that post their strategies.

Re: Talkative players
For most games I don't talk. It's not out of disrespect, just I don't usually have anything to say. I think it's like a chess game, where you let your playstyle do the talking for you, and through that you build a relationship (positive or negative) moreso than through chatting during the game. Also I find a good 75% or so of comments irritating (gg, dice suck, drop sucks) so generally if they don't open that door I won't either
The main exception is I will try to be more polite on the Charleston map, for Southern hospitality and all that.

Re: Talkative players
When I started playing here I used to chat a lot but I have come to find out that not only do people not chat back, some of them tell me I talk too much
. I always find it pleasant when someone is chatty in the game unless it's all about how they are beating me lol.
Re: Talkative players
For me it's part of the game. I can appreciate the association with chess, but would you really think more of someone who walked in, played their first move, completed the game, left the room and never said anything?
If you can't be bothered to even say hello, then it's just rude.

If you have established teammates or clan partners, lots of communication usually goes on. Public games with random teammates is much more hit or miss.

Re: Talkative players
6_roller I like that analogy. That would be really strange lol.
Re: Talkative players
I used to think that. It used to really irritate me when I would say "hello" and nobody said anything back. I used to try real hard to start conversations in games, and really felt insulted that so few people chatted back.chocolateballs wrote:It's really surprising to me how few people post/respond to posts in the game chat. But then I found myself with too many games on my hands, and I was just rushing through them, trying to get done my turns so I could go to bed, and often I didn't check chat. Then I began to realize that those other people were just like me. Got sucked into too many games, didn't really have time to enjoy them, and were just wearily clicking away trying to get done so they could get to bed/dinner/work etc.
Also, when conversations did start, they often ran through the same predictable cycles. Everybody says "good luck," but when your luck really is good they wish it wasn't. So then either A. they say something nasty about your luck or B. they try to put a brave face on it and continue to compliment you on your brilliant play (when in fact you know and they know that it's just pure dumb luck that just let you steamroll through eight continents without losing a troop.) So 90% of the conversations are about someone bemoaning their bad luck or insincerely complimenting you on your great play, and after you've been here a while you've heard every possible variation of those themes and you just don't want to bother any more.
I'm not trying to depress you. Sometimes really fun conversations do happen. Once in a while a spark ignites, you get just the right people at just the right time and everyone is chatting about interesting things and telling jokes and having a blast. Those moments do happen. Just don't expect them all the time.

I am not making a shot but I hope that this game never becomes a chore for me. I would probably quit if it did

Re: Talkative players
It sorta helps if the people you're playing against are on the forums or are otherwise known in some capacity (newsletter writer, volunteer, clan member), they usually are more open to some light banter.Dukasaur wrote:I used to think that. once you get to the thousands or tens of thousands most chat falls into the same old same old.
Re: Talkative players
I prefer a bit of chatter and find it odd that some players can remain mute for fifty or more rounds in a game. There have been many games where the banter is more entertaining than the actual play.
This game should never become a chore --I'm in total agreement with Funky t on that point-- and would likely cease bothering to play if it did.

Sometimes I talk, sometimes I don't. It's never anything personal, but it's usually decided of whether or not I'm rushing to take my turns or if I'm in a good mood at the time.

Re: Talkative players
I generally talk in my games, to the dismay of some, to the enjoyment of others. It really depends on the game for me. Like if I'm playing with a bunch of CC I know, then I'm generally pretty chatty, if it's an Oasis quads, I just do my thing and leave, if it's a tournament or clan game it's generally just "gl", "gg", and strategy talk if I'm on a team.

Re: Talkative players
If someone has been quiet throughout I'll look at his active games and usually discover he's in about 50+ and is therefore just running through all his turns without having time for a "how de doo" and won't think anything less of the person. I'll occasionally give a 'Silent' rating if I can't see any reason for the player being so aloof.
For chocolateballs he's a freemium, so of course his four games mean a lot more to him than the 50+ of a premium and he's presumably wanting to gain more enjoyment from them than simply waiting for his next turn.
Anyway mate, keep up the chat - it's the hallmark of a good player and team mate - and sooner or later you'll find a good doubs partner, then a trips team, then a quads and before you know it the doors will open to a clan in which you'll probably find everything you're looking for.
Good luck

I've got some dubs partners and some triples as well but I don't belong to a clan since I don't want that kind of responsibility lol. The thing is though, what would your life be if you found a group of friends and only hung out/spoke to them. You would be missing out on new people and experiences!

Re: Talkative players
really? what is Knights Templar? i thought that was a clan... maybe i'm mistaken... and sometimes when you have 20 plus games or 50 games, chat isn't really that important to you. i do enjoy a good chat from time to time, though...-the black terranceFunkyterrance wrote:I've got some dubs partners and some triples as well but I don't belong to a clan since I don't want that kind of responsibility lol. Re: Talkative players
Quite true if one only hung out and/or spoke to them. We're a pretty sociable bunch in TOFU though and if you look at the majority of our members' games you'll see they are with people from the whole spectrum of CC's colourful community. The only time we become more insular is during a clan challenge or in those games that comprise our internal clan tourney (er, obviously).
footnote - lol Owen. I was just reading up about Knights Templar earlier coz I was seeing if Terrance was in a clan or not. KT looks to be more of a social group than anything else, with 100s of members.

I'm really bad at the whole "opening greeting" thing because when I see a fresh map, I kinda get tunnel vision until I can work up a plan or two. Also, on more than one occasion, an attempt at humor has been interpreted as me being a dick, so I'm kinda reserved unless I'm playing with people that know me.

If I created it and nobody responded to it I wouldn't be surprised.

Re: Talkative players
But seriously, people actually had a problem with you joking around? The only situation where I have thought the other player was being a "dick" was when they were all chipper when they were doing well and pissy, complaining, or otherwise un-chipper when they were losing.

sure buddy, I love you all. (wait has lovefest 2011 already started..oh wow) So if I call all of you my friends, and i speak with you, all be it in riddles, then i meet all kind of people, but also new people who thereby become my firends, then the premise of FunkyT is incomplete.
