Reserved posts

Post by Mr_Adams »

When making certain threads, especially tournament threads, it is often useful for tournament purposes to reserve the first 2 or three posts in the thread. However, this is quite a hassle, when we have this rule that you can't post with in so many seconds of a previous post, bla bla bla. So, you should be able to make reserved posts (from none to three) at the beginning of a thread you start, even if only available from certain forms, from the thread creation screen. These would show up as posts with the single word "reserved" in them, and could be edited by the person who made them, just like normal posts.

Yeah...when I did my Track Meet Tournament, I needed to reserve about 18 or so of the first posts in the thread. So I'm rushing through trying to reserve the posts, hoping nobody would jump into the tournament before I got them all, and while fighting the "you can't post so quickly" situation. This wouldn't completely fix my problem (and I would say "up to three is just about perfect), but it certainly would have helped.

It should be a fairly simple script over ride and clip in a little tick box or counter. 15 minutes max, for a good programer.

This would require a phpBB mod, not a difficult or long one, but a mod nonetheless. I'll see exactly what changes would have to be made and post back more information when I have it. (Beware, it may be a while)

Definitely helpful for tournaments but could be abused elsewhere. I could see the benefit in suggestions so that the OP could add new thoughts/ideas/topics of discussion, but again...abuse potential.

Easy. Make it only applicable to threads in the create a tourny section. :)

Sounds good, but only for the OP. I can see a need in suggetions forums as well, though it might be more readily abused there.

Unlikely. We don't usually reserve posts in map threads, it's considered better to have all relevant information in the first post.

However this would be a good thing for tournament forum, I think.

That makes sense.

I like this idea. Also, as for abuse, the forum restraint probably fixes most potential, and for the spammers, well, we could just merge the posts together. I wouldn't worry about abuse too much. (and that's coming from a mod of all people, yikes!)

I fully support this idea.

Please, don't make posts like this. There's no quicker way to piss off a programmer than to tell him how long the project you're requesting should take.

Not if you're right. Which he probably isn't. See: Hofstadter's Law.

The thoughts that would go through my head if I received this request would be "Yeah, I do this for a living, I know how long it takes", "Who are you to tell me how long this task should take me?", and/or "Yes, because this is the only project I have to work on right now  " (all edited for explicit language prior to posting  )

^^What he says^^

Also, if it would only take a good programmer 15 minutes, you should have no problems writing one up in a day right? :)

To be fair, I could put a check box on a web page in under 15 minutes.

This was funny to see, now it ends being funny. Lets move back to the subject please!

Is there any merit in the reserved post? I think there is no real limit to the size of the first post. you can easely edit it, so i do not really see any need for such a reserved post. I used to see it, but that was before i heavely relied on the edit a post button..

From an aesthetic point of view, I really prefer the multiple posts, so I don't have to manually scroll through a wall of text to find the information I'm looking for. Having reserved posts for brackets and whatnot isn't necessary but it's really convenient.
