Re: offensive name
When I first saw your screen name I was shocked. Bogan is a derogatory name for Native Canadians. It is likened to the N word for African Canadians/Americans. Did a quick search and saw that it means something totally different in New Zealand. Funny how the same word can mean two different things in two different cultures.BoganGod wrote:In that case, mods please remove all rational and working parts from this site.....greenoaks wrote:anything americans find offensive should be removed immediately
Am intrigued by some of the comments earlier in this thread. Now if the accused is black, and "taking" the word back to "empower" himself, would it be an act of prejudice on the site to make him change his name? Does the site require proof of racial identity to use a word, that some are allowed to, but when others use it is considered offensive?
On a more light hearted note, has owen proved he is really jesus, because I'm sure he is offending a few christians.......... Look for it soon in cheating and abuse, offensive sig, religious baiting.

Just to clear things up, I was just giving bogan crap about wearing ugg boots, thongs, and trucker caps. I didn't mean to start anything serious there.

Re: offensive name
yes, words mean different thing in different cultures and in different contexts. the "N" word has such an obvious, hurtful, and offensive place in American history that it has no place being used as a user name on a casual gaming site. the line between egregious and acceptable may be blurry as we discuss more and more terms, but there is absolutely no reason that word (and a few others, i might add) should be used on the public areas of this site.
if some players want to start a private user group where the "N" word is openly discussed, defended, rationalized-that's fine with me (as an individual, and I am in no way representing the site in this opinion). But that word is too loaded to capriciously toss around in this community.

Re: offensive name
Thats would be putting Americans above everybody else on an international website, which should happen. Although if you want to go by American standards then you should recognize our freedom of expression which would render Swamp Nig untouchable. A username is merely a string of letters so dont look deep into it. If your gut instinct tells you to laugh, laugh. If your gut says 'hey, that guy pushed my button' then simply dont join his game.greenoaks wrote:it is like i said, if an american finds something offensive it should be removed immediately

I have seen people with a random ass name like Anjffdhjee0101. Would anyone complain about their name because if you twist the rules far and hard enough it could be considered spam ?

I didn't realize the term "swamp nig" had non-offensive connotations in other cultures. Can you explain to us what it actually means, so we can put this silly thing behind us?greenoaks wrote:it is like i said, if an american finds something offensive it should be removed immediately

Re: offensive name
In amongst my sillyness, I was attempting to pose a serious question. I agree that Swamp Nig is inflammatory if a white person was to call a black person that. My question is - What if this is a black person, taking the word back, empowering him/herself by using a bad name, to state that he/she doesn't care what people call her/him? I have a few Samoan friends who refer to themselves as "hard coconuts" coconut is a derogatory term for pacific islanders in Australia and New Zealand. I have a chinese friend who refers to himself as the "big banana" a very clever play on words, which can be taken in multiple ways..... Banana is a derogatory term that asians call other asians, inferring that the recipient of the slur, is only yellow(asian) on the outside, and really white on the inside. Again I agree that it is Swamp Nig is offensive. Just wondering about the context.
On the off topic Bogan discussion, in New South Wales(one of the Australian states) there is a Bogan moth, which has evolved since white settlement to blend in with concrete buildings. Bogan moths can swarm, a bit like locusts, and on at least one occasion have almost shut down the Sydney cbd, by getting into air cons, and generally making a nuisance of themselves.

If you mean it is American history that is the cause of almost any word you say offensive, then I give you bonus points, if not, then better luck next time...
I really dunno what "swamp nig" togeather means but just one word seperate, no where's NEAR offensive. Like I said, the guy who made this thread never had a game with him of what I saw so he must of searched usernames really hard and picked out ones he could twist into something offensive. For all we know he could be black himself, or maybe he didn't even know it was offensive... (I still see no reason it'd be unless of like I said they made Nig a bit longer to make it into the N word, in which case I could take the word Ad and expand it into adolf.)
Sad part is people even pay attention to trolls. I mean why? a word or two is enough for people to give a rat's ass what others think? (and that students is a lesson in Society now-a-days, IQ went from 100 down to -1...)

or in simpler terms,jaimito101 wrote:Well if he is reffering to himself, should that make it allowable? No, doesn't change anything because we are acting in a community, with its communal rules!
some countries believe in the use of corporal punishment like cutting off a hand if you steal. If a person who agrees with this ideology, steals in the a western country, would they therefore have to have their hand cut off? No, different communities have different rules. You addapt to them if you want to be part of the community. The use of the word nig... is forbidden on the site, if the use of it offends any other member, therefore no matter what label you yourself would like to put on it, it is clearly forbidden in an username as this is bound to be seen as offensive by members.
a better question would be, If 2 people who know each other are playing a 1vs1 game, would they be allowed to call each othe these names if they themselves both see the humor/other meaning that is being used?

+ 1 to what Jaimito said.
This thread should not even be here. It should have gone straight to a mod and let the mods change it. This thread only makes that kid smile that made the name.

Re: offensive name
I think we already have more than enough inputs about this username. It is true that some people will find a particular username offensive while some do not. For all we know, your own username could also be offensive from one particular place in the planet because it represents an awful history, person or an incident in that area.
I'll lock this thread until a decision is made to prevent further troll posts and misspells of the username in question again.
I'm giving this a month from the date I locked this thread until the account in question returns back or becomes active again so we can go ahead with the next step. If after a month, he has still not logged in, we are just going to note this report and move it to closed. Feel free to alert me or any of the hunters if you see the account becomes active again.
