Clan Privileges - Label Discussion

Postby jpcloet on Sat Aug 28, 2010 9:41 am

Now that we have gaming privileges, what's the best way to use the label.

I was thinking something like

Month-Year Clan vs Clan [Event]

Eg.

Sept 2010 LOW vs THOTA [CCup]

If you end up using the tournament stats script to view history of your clan, using the same tags like LOW become important from a technical point. That would mean we should probably formalize our clan's tags. Eg. I have often used BotFM whereas others use BFM. There is also the clan script that shows who is in what clan and I think there might be a few differences. Leehar has a thread about all clans maybe that will start the standard.

Maybe use:
[event] year month - "stage": clan vs clan

1. [CLA] 2010 August - Finals: LoW vs THOTA
2. [CLA] Finals: LoW vs THOTA (2010 August)
3. 2010 August - Finals. LoW vs THOTA [CCup]

It will be easier to filter them by events (first part) and will have all the info we need. I think the date might be unnecessary.

I think #2 will work best.

The date could be both useful and important.

Useful in the fact that if you wanted to review your year, eg 2010, then you can get those results.

Important, I was thinking because a few clans have played each other twice now. KORT v G1, THOTA v LOW and I think Nemesis v BSS. Now in these cases they are challenges and CCup, but you could imagine 2 or 3 years down the road, possibly facing in the CCup again, especially some of the elites.

Yes I think that's best - the most likely search order for anyone looking will be event, clan, then date.
Got to keep it simple as with multiple people making games there are bound to be mistakes.
What if it's a straight war, not part of an event?
Do you make it, for example:

Challenge: LoW vs THOTA (2010 August)

Or just

LoW vs THOTA (2010 August)

?

I'd be inclined to say that there should be a [Challenge] element... generally speaking, Dako's #2 looks good, tho I think the entire event tag should be within the bracket: [CCup Semis] THOTA vs. LoW (August 2010), or [CLA Div. 1 Finals] LoW vs. BpB (July 2010).

Not only are we going to have to nail down each clan's official acronym (assuming they have one, I can't see a good way to shorten Nemesis, for instance), but we'll have to nail down the precise nomenclature for various events and levels within such events, i.e. CCup or Cup, Semis or Semifinals, CLA Finals or CLA Division 1 Finals or CLA Div 1 Finals, etc etc

I like Dako's #2 as well.

I think it'd be nice if we had an official list where all clans had a ≤4 letter acronym to be used in the tag. I'll make an exception for THOTA, because it's so well-known and all, but it shouldn't be too hard.

show: clans

Those're all the active ones from the Power Rankings that I have. It would just be nice to have some uniformity, I think. And from a fastpost I see Inc has the right idear.

DEVB
GRIM

I think most people use the same acronym, however, it should probably be up to the clan to make their own. 5 should be fine, I wouldn't be surprised if ++The Legion++ use

Or Empire just use EMPIRE.

I think this is where I'll just jump in, and where my thread may come in useful (as I think jp mentioned). Obviously it's dependent on the clans replying, which isn't a foregone conclusion, but since in the template there's place for the clans abbreviation and if they've entered it in, I think then thats obviously what we should really use. There obviously will be a problem using an accepted method for the acronyms. We've already seen that there are differences in some, probably most notably with The Brethren of the Fat Mermaid. If we follow the thota route, it could be tbotfm, we've already seen botfm and bfm in use, and clan rank uses bofm (which I think Bogan said he was happy with). It'll be interesting to see what they choose tho...
I'm not actually really sure where inc is going with nemesis, I would think using the first three letters is a pretty normal method for shortening it (similar to how I think empire would naturally be shortened to emp). I guess it may become a problem if perhaps a clan with N.E.M. comes up as it's abbreviation(New Empire Magistus or something weird like that), but don't really think thats likely 8-[
However, there also becomes an issue with, even if it's what a clan is officially called, it's not really much use if they are really referred to as such. For example if I refer to the Horseman of the Apocalypse as HA (since I think dropping the articles and small words is a common practice in abbreviations, similar to google search ;)) when everyone else calls it thota is pretty nonsensical. Just something to think about I guess.

Also, I guess it'll be useful to note, that when using the gamefinder to search, it usually brings up the oldest entries first, if that changes anything with regards to how you'd like to use the date tag?
And then, how would you work with something like Tofu's challenge with AoC. I think it was initially a 20(?) game challenge for the div2 finals(?), and then was extended into a full-fledged one later? Obviously there's a difference in timings on when they started among other things, but it'll be interesting to see how something like that will be tagged :-s

I think TOFU vs AoC is a unique case.

For every war/battle a label will be created. All games will use that same label , so if a war/battle gets extended the same label will be used!

You think there's any reason to denote which team is which in those games? Like in the TOFU/KORT war - whoops bad example since Bruce refuses to embrace change. Like in LoW/THOTA, it would be LoW vs THOTA for LoW home games, THOTA vs LoW for THOTA home games?

I like what Inca said, put the whole part inside the brackets. There is a 48 character limit on the game label for tourney games which we need to keep in mind.

[CLA Div 2 Semifinals] THOTA vs EMPIRE (Sep 2011) = 49 characters. That's the longest I could think of.

You would have to distinguish the home team in the game label because the actual tournament title changes all tournaments associated with that privilege. You'd have to issue 2 separate privileges if you wanted to flip the names in the title, but even that's not possible because each thread can only have 1 set of privileges linked to it.

For dates I think best to use the start month of the challenge for all games even if it spreads over several months.

Ok, I get that, but as dako says, it's a special case (still, there is a possibility that it may happen again).
However, I thought it may be an issue, if it actually counts for the finals. I'm not really sure how to explain it, or whether I even understood it properly, but how do you separate the part that actually counts for the Div2 final, and the part that forms part of a clan war? If you're tagging it, how would you account for perhaps one clan winning the final, while the other wins the war, but with it still counting the same games? Sorry for bringing it up, but I just thought it was something worth mentioning/considering... 8-[

I think the Home/Away can be denoted just be Team1/Team2. Team1 always home, team2 - away games.

As for label - I don't think the order of clan names matters.
