Still need to see Memento and Gangs of New York. Sorry but as quotable as that one line from the movie is (one of the best of all times), There Will be Blood sucked donkey turds.SultanOfSurreal wrote:if we're talking major motion pictures only (not indie films, of which there's been many amazing efforts this past decade, such as Moon, Open Water, and Inland Empire)

Re: Top 10 Movies of the decade ?
There were so many good movies in the last decade, and in some ways it's almost unfair to say only a top ten, since in each progressive decade of the last century, more films get released as time goes on. So here's my top ten with a shit load of honorable mentions.
1. 3:10 to Yuma
2. Adaptation
3. The Dark Knight
4. Collateral
5. 28 Days Later
6. Master and Commander: Far Side of the World
7. The Wrestler
8. Moon
9. Up
10. Super Troopers
City of God, Royal Tenenbaums, Old Boy, Man on Fire, Layer Cake, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Good Night and Good Luck, 40 Year-Old Virgin, The Prestige, Little Miss Sunshine, Children of Men, Casino Royale, Minority Report, Idiocracy, Inside Man, Letters from Iwo Jima, There Will Be Blood, American Gangster, Zodiac, Shoot 'Em Up, Gran Torino, Rocky Balboa, I <3 Huckabees, The Constant Gardener.

Re: Top 10 Movies of the decade ?
A few other ones that haven't been mentioned yet but deserve honourable mention are The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which is the best western imho since Unforgiven. Also, The Aviator, The Garden State, (500) Days of Summer, Control, Zombieland and Pan's Labyrinth.. all great films making it very hard to create a ranking top 10.

Hell yes! Cinderalla Man belongs on the top 10. Memento was completely awesome as well. I remember after I watched it, I immediately watched it again, and then could not stop talking about it for 2 days...Frito Bandito wrote:If you're going to include Russell Crowe movies, got to have Cinderella man!!

Wow what a strange coincidence!
I guess I and the Academy both have bad taste though, sultan said so.

I haven't seen #'s 1-3, 5, 6, 8, 9 & all of Slumdog Millionaire.nagerous wrote:I put some thought into it and here is my list:
1. City of God
2. Requiem for a Dream
3. In Bruges
4. Sin City
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
6. This is England
7. Shaun of the Dead
8. Sideways
9. Memento
10. District 9/Slumdog Millionaire
Sin City was interesting, but it's definitely not in my top 10.
Shaun of the Dead... I already talked about that.
District 9 was pretty good.
Slumdog Millionaire... I didn't see all of this because I sometimes fight the current and choose not to go with the flow.
(I only saw the part that he jumps into the shit-pile when I was taking a break. -I have worked and still do work part-time at a theatre.)
(I'm not an ass, but, the plot in which a hopelessly poor person has a reverse in fortune doesn't particularaly interest me very much.)
Renewed yet infused with apathy.

Re: Top 10 Movies of the decade ?
Still haven't seen that one.... another reason why "top ten lists" are intrinsically flawed. Who out there has even seen every single movie released in the time period?
On the other hand, threads like this are great. I'm using it to update my Netflix queue, and I just added State of Play.
(NOTE: I don't watch movies for actors, I watch them for directors or writers. Crowe just happened to be in two of the best movies I saw this past decade)

Re: Top 10 Movies of the decade ?
Totally for personal fun reasons I decided to design intrinsically flawed lists of my favourite films from the '70s, '80s and '90s too and here are those lists:
70s
1. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest 2. Taxi Driver 3. The Deer Hunter 4. Dog Day Afternoon 5. A Clockwork Orange 6. The Godfather II 7. Mean Streets 8. The Godfather 9. Apocalypse Now 10. Chinatown
80s
1. Platoon 2. Full Metal Jacket 3. Aliens 4. Scarface 5. Dead Poet's Society 6. The Shining 7. Rain Man 8. Predator 9. The Untouchables 10. Hamburger Hill
90s
1. The Big Lebowski 2. Fight Club 3. Pulp Fiction 4. American History X 5. American Beauty 6. Leon 7. Heat 8.The Usual Suspects 9. L.A. Confidential 10. Goodfellas
My conclusion is the 80s sucked.

Re: Top 10 Movies of the decade ?
1. LOTR Trilogy (Obviously)
2. Shrek (1st one was best)
3. 300 (great action sequences, but the director/producer or whatever skipped out on the actual armor, other wise it would 2)
4. Hangover (one of the funniest films I have ever seen)
5. Beerfest (just a little below Hangover)
6. Underworld series (a film pitting vampires against werewolves. what more could you ask for?)
7. Pirates of the Caribbean 1 (didn't care much for the other 2)
8. The Scorpion King (even though it didn't explain how he became the Scorpion King, I still enjoy it quite a bit)
9. The Mummy & The Mummy Returns (3rd one sucked balls)
10. Kung-Fu Hustle (One of my favorites of Stephen Chow's movies)
2. Shrek (1st one was best)

I'm not that good at remembering when movies came out, but your 70's would seem to exclude both Rocky Horror and Phantom of the Paradise. And the 80's miss Excalibur abd Princess Bride.nagerous wrote:Totally for personal fun reasons I decided to design intrinsically flawed lists of my favourite films from the '70s, '80s and '90s too and here are those lists:

I quite enjoyed it, but I gelt it couldn't decide if it was a thriller, comedy, documentary, or what.

If you mean the men who stare at goats, then yeah I enjoyed it a lot - mainly to do with the cast as it had four of my favourite actors in it - I saw it more of a comedy.

Maybe this thread should be split into two.
US self regarding types can talk about the top ten US box office hits.
The rest of the world can talk about the really great films going on in the world.
Ten is hard though. Been drunk for most of the decade.

I thought it was okay. I was kind of disappointed, what with the high quality actors. I don't think I laughed out loud once, though I chuckled a little at the beginning.jonesthecurl wrote:Yeah, but it didn't quite make it as any of those things.
