The Year of Pointless Remakes
Which movie seems like the most pointless remake/sequel coming out this year? Or, any year really.
My vote:
The Karate Kid
With Jackie Chan and Will Smith's son, Jaden. Please note, film will not actually contain karate.

Re: The Year of Pointless Remakes
I like Jackie Chan, but why is it called "The Karate Kid" when they are using Kung-Fu!?
The Friday the 13th remake was decent, but you really can't say that about very many remakes.

That one does look kind of good, but more for the effects than the plot so far. I'm wary of another Speed Racer-style 2 hour headache with nods to a classic.safariguy5 wrote:Not a remake, but Tron Legacy looks legit.
I'll probably see it anyway. I'm weak.

How about this-
Next in the series of "The Planet of the Apes".
Takes place where it all started, A romantic adventure about a young lady that is lost in the jungle. She is taken in and raised by a band of Bonoboes. Eventually she manages to birth hybrid offspring. ...And the Saga begins.

Oh, and just to let people know- a few of the remakes and sequels coming out this year:
The A-Team
Nightmare on Elm Street
Robin Hood
Shrek Forever After
Iron Man 2
Sex and the City 2
Predators
Toy Story 3
The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Bizarrely a live remake of Fantasia with Nicholas Cage)
Resident Evil: Afterlife
Saw VII
Red Dawn
Iron Man 2 should be fun, Toy Story 3 likewise. New Robin Hood has Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe, so a step up from Kevin Costner, and a step down from Alan Rickman.

ALso not a remake, but the Avatar The Last Airbender has caught my attention if for nothing more than that the tv series was pretty good. Though sometimes such transitions fail horribly, I'll give it a go.

I liked the TV series, but casting white actors to play Tibetan and Inuit characters seems kind of crappy. Also M. Knight Shyamalan directing.muy_thaiguy wrote:ALso not a remake, but the Avatar The Last Airbender has caught my attention if for nothing more than that the tv series was pretty good. Is it just me or did Jackie Chan age like 40 years?

I don't know if you aged 40 years, but Jackie Chan did as soon as he hit Hollywood.Army of GOD wrote:Is it just me or did Jackie Chan age like 40 years?
To be fair, though, it killed Bruce Lee.
I think a good 8 minutes of Drunken Master are in order:
Raise a glass to some classic Jackie Chan

If the live action Dragonball Z movie was any indication, it won't be any good.Symmetry wrote:I liked the TV series, but casting white actors to play Tibetan and Inuit characters seems kind of crappy. In all seriousness, Hollywood lost their originality about six years ago.Symmetry wrote:Which movie seems like the most pointless remake/sequel coming out this year? Or, any year really.

Six? I've been watching the same typical movie from them for decades now...Woodruff wrote:In all seriousness, Hollywood lost their originality about six years ago.Symmetry wrote:Which movie seems like the most pointless remake/sequel coming out this year? Or, any year really.

But at least they had the humility to change the god-damn names of the movies. That's not even bothered with any longer.BigBallinStalin wrote:Six? Re: The Year of Pointless Remakes
I was merely commenting on the fact that they cast a white guy to play Goku in Dragonball Z. As soon as I heard that I was like....yep, movie is terrible. Seriously, they could have grabbed an extra off the set of Gran Torino and he would have done a better job. I just hate how Hollywood stereotypes all mainstream Asian actors as Kung Fu masters and never casts them in anything else even when it's blindingly obvious they should be.Symmetry wrote:Heh- never got into Dragonball, and now it's too long...safariguy5 wrote:If the live action Dragonball Z movie was any indication, it won't be any good.Symmetry wrote:I liked the TV series, but casting white actors to play Tibetan and Inuit characters seems kind of crappy. And actually, the original series is only like 50 episodes long (the DBZ series is somewhere over 500). And the live action Dragon Ball bastardized the original storyline. Pissed me off.

Re: The Year of Pointless Remakes
Speaking of Sorceror's Apprentice, I saw the trailer while watching Alice in Wonderland. I had no idea it was derived from Fantasia. Just like Sherlock Holmes looked very little like the classic one, it looks like they took a cartoon of Mickey Mouse and grittied him up a lot.
Speaking of Alice in Wonderland, it's less odd than Burton's recent films (Sweeny Todd anyone?) and the action was alright, but I really thought Depp carried the film and all the other characters were really lackluster.

As for most pointless upcoming remakes, Let Me In has to be a serious contender. Really, the original is from 2008, the idea of a remake of King Kong or War of the Worlds makes sense, how the remake turns out is a different question, but the idea of a remake makes sense for movies that old. But Let the right one in is from 2008, there's no reason for a remake practically immediately after a movie has come out, especially not when there's hardly anything about the original that could have been done better.

Well Asians are also science/technology geeks as well. Re: The Year of Pointless Remakes
Although I love love love the Coen brothers, why remake True Grit? I'm sure it'll be awesome, but why?
On a similar note, the remake of Bad Lieutenant, while rather well done, seemed a trifle unnecessary.

Yeah- just watched the original, and thought it was great. I can't see what a remake would add apart from English speakers. I guess anything with vampires is good for business at the moment, whatever the actual merit of the film.MeDeFe wrote:Damn you! Re: The Year of Pointless Remakes
Laughed at the poster for Robin Hood, Maximus in the forest...
Doubtless it'll be a case of Crowe saying "Son of a murdered Father, Citizen of a betrayed land, Loyal Servant to the true King of England...and I shall have my revenge in this life or the next! A Pox upon you Sheriff *spits* and upon Prince John".
As if we needed another Robin Hood film, there's gotta be loads of cool hero stories and myths instead.
Prince of Persia looks good.
