Geography help
I just got a geography test back, and I missed three ridiculous problems. Please tell me if I am wrong.
1) Before 1989, which Country bordering the Black Sea was the farthest to the North
My Answer: USSR
"Correct" Answer: Romania
Teacher's Rationale: The USSR didn't border the Black Sea before 1989
2) Which Scandinavian country lies farthest to the East?
My Answer: Finland
"Correct" Answer: Sweeden
Teacher's Ratioale: Finland isn't considered part of Scandinavia
3) Before 1989 which Nation's largest city was entirely surrounded by another country's capitol city?
My Answer: Vatican City
"Correct" Answer: Germany
Teacher's Rationale: Vatican City isn't a city, and Berlin was entirely owned by West Germany

teacher has got to be wrong because if I remember correctly Russia bordered it during WWI which was long before 1989DIRESTRAITS wrote:I just got a geography test back, and I missed three ridiculous problems. Please tell me if I am wrong.

The U.S.S.R was only around for another 2 years after 1989. And it would of bordered it along time before that.DIRESTRAITS wrote:[Teacher's Rationale: The USSR didn't border the Black Sea before 1989
What a stupid teacher.

1. bullsh*t. Ask your teacher about the damn Crimea, which is the peninsula that juts out into the Black Sea and was MOST CERTAINLY part of the soviet union.
2. bullsh*t. By traditional reckoning, Finland is part of Scandanavia.
3. Hate to tell you, but your teacher's got you there.
But 1 out of three for your teacher is awful. If she doesn't change your score for the first two, she sucks.
Oh, and sumatra doesn't share a border with brunei. Very important.

I always thought the USSR collapsed in 1989, you should check some historical maps I think.DIRESTRAITS wrote:1) Before 1989, which Country bordering the Black Sea was the farthest to the North

It depends, the scandinavian peninsula contains Sweden and Norway (and Denmark, too, for historical reasons), because of their close ties and history Finland, Iceland and the Faeroer are sometimes included. You're both sort of right.DIRESTRAITS wrote:2) Which Scandinavian country lies farthest to the East?

Germany has NEVER been entirely surrounded by ONE other nation. It's true that West Berlin was entirely surrounded by the German Democratic Republic (aka. East Germany), but the rest of the Federal Republic of Germany (aka. West Germany) was NOT surrounded by the FDR nor by one other single nation.DIRESTRAITS wrote:3) Before 1989 which Nation's largest city was entirely surrounded by another country?

So I think you're right about the Vatican
Re: Geography help
Was West Berlin the biggest West German City? I'd have thought Munich would have been bigger.DIRESTRAITS wrote:3) Before 1989 which Nation's largest city was entirely surrounded by another country?

Re: Geography help
Pass. I'd have given the same answer as you, but perhaps Romania bordered the most northerly part of the Black Sea in 1988? I don't know ....DIRESTRAITS wrote:1) Before 1989, which Country bordering the Black Sea was the farthest to the North

Again, I'd have given the same answer as you there - but according to Cynthia it isn't, and seeing as she's from Scandinavia I'm happy to take her word for it.DIRESTRAITS wrote:2) Which Scandinavian country lies farthest to the East?

Wikipedia also says it isn't.
I'd have probably guessed that one, seeing as it started with "before 1989".DIRESTRAITS wrote:3) Before 1989 which Nation's largest city was entirely surrounded by another country?

I agree with your teacher on this, though - Vatican City is the entire state, not an individual city. By the same thinking you could've also included San Marino, which isn't a city either.
EDIT: getting carried away with the old commas there

I think Vatican's the right answer, it's what's known as a city state. If West Berlin was bigger than all the other cities in West Germany, it's also a valid answer.
As for the Finland debate, a Finnish guy described himself as Scandinavian in another thread today. (I think it was the one about Norwegians)
No doubt about the USSR though, the Ukraine (part of the old USSR), forms most of the Black Seas northern coastline

Didn't see the "largest city" part in Q3, well... then it's West Berlin, since it says "before 1989" (when east and west Germany reunited). but for your teachers information, Berlin was NOT wholly owned by west Germany, it had been divided into an american, a british, a soviet and a french section. The soviet section was part of east Germany, the others were part of west Germany. That's why they built the (in)famous Berlin wall, too.

I dont understand the first part, but I think your teacher has got you, scandinavia is just the peninsula sort of how france is near Iberia, but isn't part of the peninsula.
And its clear you are learning about the cold war and thus Berlin would have some importance where as Vatican City, does not seem relative or logical.
Passing history tests isn't just knowing random knowledge, its also being able to relate other knowledge to the topic at hand.
