Host the animated gif on imageshack and then set it as your avatar. Works for me...

If you find the image online right click on it and copy image location.
Paste that info in the box provided in control panel uder avatar tab. good luck

I used photobucket and this didn't work. Should I create an imageshack account?

I figured it out. You need to resize the image in photobucket first, or it won't bring over the animation.

That was my conclusion too.

I've taken the liberty of resizing the image as appropriate for our favourite paper towel manufacturer:
