Can you play in your own tournament?

I've been looking at hosting and playing tournaments, but no one has made a tournament that interests me. Do i have to wait until i get lucky, or can i host a tournament and play in it at the same time?

I'll be doing a pretty basic tournament at first with standard rules and victory conditions. Shouldn't be a problem.
