This map is going to suck really badly with the current arrangement of pieces. If you control the green, orange or purple continent you can take the other two without increasing your borders at all, leading to a bonus of 10 with two borders. Also, the yellow cont is too easy to take and hold for a 3 bonus with it's two border countries being adjacent to each other.
I'd recommend removing the knight on E6 which will help with the first problem, and make the map less linear as well. For the yellow problem, you could move the B4 pawn to C3, making B4 yellow to make it worth it's 3 bonus.
If you're prepared to totally change things around, with the black king in the title being down it might be nice to have black in a checkmate position on the board.

Taking an enemy on the battlefield is like a hawk taking a bird. Though it enters into the midst of a thousand of them, it pays no attention to any bird other than the one it has first marked.

continent values
this looks like an awesome map, but i think you shouldput the values down for the upper continents, or at least ad another border or something.

Hello everyone,
I just thought that I would give this a bump, and just give people an idea of the current status of this map in development.
(Check the first post for the most recent version of the map.)
Right now the issues of this map are:
-How the pieces look. I couldn't really find or make any good looking chess peices that would work. These are the best I have so far, but they are a little pixillated.
-Continents and bonuses. I tried to arrange the peices so it looks like a chess game that is in progress, but at the same time you need to be able to have it arranged so there are decent continents.
-Overall look of the map. I wanted a chess clock on there, but the one I have right now might not work. Also I need need to add something cool for the key of the map (the bonuses).
Maybe this will spark people's interest. If anyone can help out with the graphics of the peices, I would apreciate it.

Agreed, too Atari 2600.cramill wrote:Right now the issues of this map are:

Why have color bonuses at all? This is a chess set, not a map with territories and regions. Come up with something that fits the theme: +3 for both kings, +4 for all rooks, etc.cramill wrote:-Continents and bonuses. Or lose the bonuses altogether and introduce some creativity in the attacks - I would put all of the pieces on the board, and they can move to any square that chess piece would normally be able to move into, eg. bishops all spaces diagonally, pawns one space ahead, kings all spaces adjacent, etc. Empty spaces can't attack. This will take a lot of work to make sure there aren't any dead spaces, but it would make for an entirely unique map. Bonuses won't be nearly as important as controlling the key pieces, like the Queens.
Don't get bogged down by the look just yet - work on the playability.cramill wrote:-Overall look of the map. I wanted a chess clock on there, but the one I have right now might not work. Also I need need to add something cool for the key of the map (the bonuses).

I think this has been brought up before, but I don't see how that would work - with the pieces being the territories - it would be pretty tough and there would only be 32 countries, a very small map. It would be hard with 6 players (or possibly 8 in the future). Also, i don't even have all 32 pieces on the board right now.oaktown wrote:This is a chess set, not a map with territories and regions. Sorry these dont work with the squares, they are too tall (well at least the king and queen and such) unless they are cut down or something.Wisse wrote:try those pieces:

That wasn't what i was suggesting... I was think your still have a 64 territory board, but you can only attack from territories that have a piece. The other 64 squares are still territories, but are without attacking capabilities. The danger would be that somebody could open the game with few or even no space from which one could attack.

They'd be easy enough to size vertically. At least it would give you a cleaner outside line to start with. Wait... give me 45 seconds... and done.

Found these floating around, not sure about who owns them or copyright but they are Staunton style, public domain maybe?

Greetings, I am back from my conquer club vacation. I was really busy with school and work and such. But now I have a little more free time and I may be able to work more on this map. So it seems to me that there have been tons of suggestions on how to go about doing this, and not many conclusions. And interest in this has been off and on.
But with some work this could be a really cool map.
These pieces just might work, thanks for finding them. I'll have to see what I can do with this map. I don't have too much time in the near future, but possibly in a few weeks I could spend more time on this.
And, as far as that board two posts above this one, I don't like it. The shading on half of those squares is weird and it almost gives it an optical illusion effect.

Pretty good map. A couple things though:
*I'm assuming the pieces are unpassable borders. If so, please leave a note near the bonuses.
*The imaging needs a bit of work. You need to awesomeafy it.
*The legend looks as if you just slapped in on. Your next update should have a much better legend.
*Get Samus in here to work the bonuses. A few may need tweaking.
Other than that, great job! This could end up being a pretty good map.

yes i agree with him another thing you should ook at are the colors definently change them make them darker or something they justblend right in with the board. maybe outline the squares in a much darker coloer that contain a certain region
and get new pieces those are chopppiy
