Greek, how can you say that about GWB? He's one of the worst presidents in history, you should follow the Chilcot inquiry as its been clear for a while, and on the record now, that Bush and his administration wanted war with Iraq from the day he stepped into office. Also Bush was awful in foreign relations, dividing the world with the Iraq war, created the "Axis of Evil", antagonising Russia with missile defence, spreading terrorism throughout the world (Bush was the best recruitment tool Al-Qaeda had), having the attitude of a stereotypical cowboy, "you are with us or against us", alienating key allies etc... Its was a Dummy's guide in how not to conduct diplomacy.
Didn't Yasser Arafat get on jointly with Peres and whoever the Israeili President at the time was after signing the Oslo Accords? Being the first to come forward to the table and sign a peace agreement and "roadmap for peace" between Palestine and Israel was pretty groundbreaking, and if things turned out differently we would be praising the decision as a truly deserving one. Also you want a controversial handout, look at Henry Kissenger, why the fck does he have one?!? The reasons behind the IPCC and Al Gore receiveing there ones was put very clearly and makes a lot of sense; by raising awareness of climate change and attemping to tackle it they are saving tens of millions of lives which would have been lost to extreme weather, wars, mass movements of people etc...

Funny how right-wingers seems to flash over the first terrorist attack when judging his legacy, never mind the fact that he and his administration were told many times explicitly from a huge array of sources that they were going to be attacked by Al-Qaeda using aeroplanes as missiles....Talk about gross negligence.under GW, we never experienced another terrorist attack.

Re: Obama And The Nobel Peace Prize
I'm saying that 6 months into his presidency, was President Bush a warmongering psychopath? There answer is no.
I'm saying that 6 months into his presidency, was President Bush prosecuting any wars? The answer is no.
I'm saying that 6 months into his presidency, President Obama was prosecuting two wars (albeit inherited) and he recently re-committed to the war in Afghanistan.
And yet, AND YET, President Obama is more deserving of the Nobel PEACE(!) Prize 6 months into his presidency than President Bush was. Why? All that stuff you mention in your lengthy first paragraph was done after President Bush was in office for over 6 months.
In sum, I'm not arguing that President Bush should have won the Nobel Peace Prize. I'm saying it's ridiculous that President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Also, I do not think President Bush is one of the worst presidents in history.
Finally, no conspiracy theories please. These are ridiculous and the worst sorts of tripe.

Re: Obama And The Nobel Peace Prize
Conspiracy theories? The fact that the Bush administration did not focus enough of their attention on the immediate threat of an Al-Qaeda attack is not a conspiracy, its a fact with enough evidence backing it up. If you want proof from a large variety of sources I'm happy to give them to you.
Also Bush was warmongering from the beginning of his presidency, he wanted to invade Iraq and was trying to find ways to do it for a long time. 9/11 gave him the perfect excuse, why do you think his administration milked the fake 9/11, Al-Qaeda and Saddam link as much as they possibly could?
Finally, please reread the text that the committee published when they awarded him the prize. its not about Iraq, Afghanistan or ending wars. Its about international diplomacy, nuclear disarnment and "global harmony".

The fact is he got the award because he's not President Bush. The international community is excited about President Obama. That's not a reason to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

There is only opinion in awarding this prize. Stop getting your panties all twisted up over this, it's really not worth it.
I can honestly say that if one was presented to Bush tomorrow, I would be shrugging my shoulders just as much, but I think you would likely come up with all kinds of reasons why he deserves it. You need to stop taking Obama's Peace Prize as an indictment of Bush. The persecution complex is really getting ridiculous.

Woah there buddy. I have no persecution complex with respect to President Bush. If President Obama had received one and everyone said, "meh," I'd be okay with that. But everyone is not saying that. I'm simply flabbergasted that some people on this site and in other places have argued vociferously that President Obama deserved the award. I think it's plain Kool Aid drunkeness, and it needs to stop. AND I'M THE ONE TO STOP IT!pimpdave wrote:NO THERE IS NO FACTthegreekdog wrote:The fact is he got the award because he's not President Bush. Oh, okay. That's better then. I was getting a bit worried there for a second.
I was also about to post this as what you should be saying to the Nobel Peace Prize committee:
Well, that's just like, your opinion, man.

Well, hey now... Nobel invented TNT to provide a safer alternative to nitroglycerin, which was the primary substance used for blasting at the time, but was so unstable it resulted in many unintentional deaths. I'm pretty sure Nobel instituted his system of prizes as a way to mitigate his guilt over having created a substance that caused many, many more deaths than what he had been trying to prevent.

Re: Obama And The Nobel Peace Prize
Yer, thats pretty much the story. A French newspaper accidentally ran an obituary of him when they thought he died and called him "a bringer of evil and mass murder" or something along those lines. He was so hurt by that (as he did invent TNT for peaceful purposes) that he set up the awards in his will.pimpdave wrote:Well, hey now... Greek, who do you think should have won the award this year then? I don't think there are that many people who weren't shocked when the decision was announced, but the reasoning the committee gave was fairly logical and clear.

They could have gone with any of the following and it would have been taken more seriously:
Sima Samar
Hu Jia
Wei Jingsheng
Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad
Greg Mortenson
Personally, with all that's going on in the middle east, I would have wanted Ghazi bin Muhammad to win it.

Re: Obama And The Nobel Peace Prize
BTW, all this poll suggests is that the people responding to the poll aren't on the Nobel Prize awarding committee.
Shocking, I know.
And the truth is, Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize because the committee decided he does. That's all there is to it. This isn't something that's put out to a vote. This isn't voting for the All-Star game. Flipping out like this just means the jokes on you. And that you're stupid.

Re: Obama And The Nobel Peace Prize
This is important. The nobel peace prize isn't exactly something you should care about. The Nobel Prizes all have been subject to politics, the Peace Prize has just been more subject to it because it's obviously one that is about politics. They didn't award it to Gandhi but did give it to Yasser Arafat.pimpdave wrote: And that you're stupid.
I mean, think about that and you'll realize that while usually they give it to people who reasonably deserve it they also hand it to people for political reasons instead of actual real contributions.

The poll reflects the general opinion of the majority of people who usually answer such forum polls. Never claimed that anyone was on the Nobel Prize awarding committee...but if you would like, I could ask that question to satisfy curiosity (as it is quite evident that this poll leans towards the opinion that they believe Obama has done nothing to deserve such an honor).pimpdave wrote:BTW, all this poll suggests is that the people responding to the poll aren't on the Nobel Prize awarding committee.
Well, with the flame inciting rhetoric aside, you make a point. Yes, the NPP committee could care less about my or millions of others' opinions. Which brings to question...to what agenda do the committee members of such awarding committees serve? They consistently choose socialists over conservative as their global ideal. My flipping out seems to be a fanciful delusion, by a fanciful little trollish author who is proud to sport signatures of people that he had pissed off in the past. Of course, I am sure you would love to respond to this, but I would rather you just leave my thread alone.pimpdave wrote:And the truth is, Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize because the committee decided he does.
