How many people have READ Lord of the Rings?

Seeing as Jamie as now seen two threads started (In the last few days) with reference to LOTR I thought a little poll might be in order....

One of the greatest literary works of all time...or utter rubbish?

Read them some fifteen years ago. The Fellowship of the Ring is a struggle to get through (well, the first half of it anyway) but it really picks up in the Two Towers.

Classic books and fantasy at its earliest (and its best).

one of the first books i ever ever read.(took me about 6 months)my mother used to read the hobbit to me as a kid, because of the films, younger folk probaly wont go near the books wich is a shame. its a classic

Well, it is not a bad book, but i don't like it that much.
It is definitely the most known fantasy book and it is just something everyone should read.

But i like books by Robin Hobb(assassin series), Guy Gavriel Kay, or George R. R. Martin much better.

And "The song of ice and fire" by George Martin is my favorite book series ever.

If you read Lord of the rings and think it is a bit boring, then authors like David Gemmel is for you.
Read his " A hero in the shadows"
Or the "Drizzt" series by R.A.Salvatore==> very very interesting

These are the books that will keep you up until 5 A.M.

I concur. I went through a period where I liked them A LOT, and then I started reading better, more meaningful books, and my enthusiasm waned.

I read LOTR after the movie, and liked the books much better than the movie. Which is usually the case, the movie is quite disappointing, while the book is (in the case) really good.

well if the movie did compare to the depth of the story it would take days to watch & then your eyes would hurt from looking at a TV screen for so long...so maybe its better off that the movie was a little chopped off from the books

I love all the lotr stuff. I want to read the Silmarion but hvnt had the chance. Iv read the books like 4 times over.

While I cannot deny the impact that the Lord of the Rings has had on other literary works, I think it is over rated. Tolkien spends too much time going into detail that is not relevant to the story at hand, not to mention a repetitive method of writing (if you read it aloud, it sounds very monotone).

There are definitely much better books out there.

Silmarillion is the best out of the lost imo. Hobbit and LotR are amazing, but not upto Silmarillion standards.

Absolutely amazing books, all of them... so much story in there - as someone said previosuly, if he movie hadn't chopped it it would have taken days to watch through (though I was diisappointed that Tom Bombadil was cut out completely and Saruman's role in RotK was cut).

neither of us seem to really care about it. I saw the last one on movie, and the first book i read the first 10 pages or so (only because my friend courtney went on and on about it) im not really much into reading, but id see the movies, i havent gotten around to it though. guess it just didnt catch my eye. and i also didnt know middle earth was lord of the rings when i first saw it

Of course you didn't like it, we all could have called that one, there's a religious aspect to it.
