Anyone play Settlers of Catan?
In the game Settlers of Catan the map is different every game. In Settlers the map is made up of 5 different types of tiles. I was thinking that in this map each type of tile would be a continent. The main differences of this map are that the map would be different each game and that continents would not be together

Interesting idea.
I also think making the map always different is not possible.
But I won't do it like this:
Continent: Any wood, clay, wheat and wool. +1
Continent: Any 3 iron and 2 wheat. +1
The bonusses are way too low.
I prefer this:
Continent: Any wood, clay, wheat and wool. +3 (village)
Continent: Any 3 iron and 2 wheat. +5 (city)
Continent: Any wood and clay. +1 (street)
Continent: Any wood and wool. +1 (ship)
Continent: Any iron, wool and wheat. +2 (card)
And the city bonus is not too high.
There are not so much iron ores, i think, so it must be hard to conquer 3.
Cause they won't be next to each other, and so harder to get.

The reason I proposed just a +1 bonus for holding 1 wood, 1 clay, 1 wheat and 1 wool was the following:
You have to code it into the xml s.t. every possible combination gets that bonus.
That means that if you have the above and 1 extra wheat, you'd get twice the bonus cause you have 2 possible combinations.
If you have 2 wood, 1 clay, 2 wheat and 1 wool, that would mean 4 times the bonus cause you have 4 possible combinations. If you have another clay extra, that would even be 8 times the bonus or 6 times the bonus if you have a third wheat.
So if you have every one of them just once the bonus might be quite small, but if you have more of them, that gets huge very fast. With a base bonus of 3, that would be too much IMO.

Well, I guess I should explain to you the basic idea of the game. In Settlers of Catan, you want to settle the small island, and then build settlements and cities and such. A settlement would give you one point, and a city would give you two, to a total of ten points. There is more to it, but we don't need to get in that yet.
The ideas put forth are that you would get bonuses for owning the resources required to build settlements, cities, roads, and developement cards. Does that help?

i am not a computer programmer by any means, nor as you can tell that great with art on the computer. If any of you are and are willing to take either portion of it upon yourself that would be great.
To answer some questions that have been asked:
The current map is random and does not need to be the one we use. I would prefer it to be random but as is mentioned before this is probably not possible.
The countries would be each tile.

No, not the way you mean. If you want a particular wood to be usable in any combination to make a "road continent" then it is coded so that it can be used in every version of that continent simultaneously. Seems the solution to this is to change the resource counts... limit a couple key resources so that there are fewer possible continents made with them (like only have two wood and three ore spaces, but lots of the others).santon836 wrote:Yea, there will be copyright on the original graphics.
My question still isn't answered:
Can you put in the xml that an country may only be used in one continent?
Also, you can't generate a random map, but you could make a single well balanced map... what if you include some villages and roads to serve as impassible boarders? What if you include some of the ports that let you attack the opposite side of the island?
It'll look cool with the army numbers! Just like the dice numbers when you play the board game. Change the name and design your own tile art and keep at it!
I love Kataan, and this is a cool thread. I think any old random throw of the tiles will work as a board because the "chaos" aspect comes in when the computer puts our soldiers down all over the place. The one you have posted looks good.
Also, what if you specialized in a resource, and the more of that resource you had the more armies you would generate. like this:
2 wool = 1 army
3 wool = 3 army
4 wool = 5 army
and what are we going to do about the robber? and who lives in the desert?
