I have met people (from the US) who didn't...
EDIT:
Stop crying and go back with North Dakota because there should be two and I resent you for it.

Oddly, I've met two people who prided themselves on having been to every single US State, and one of them had even been to all the territories and protectorates, including presumably all those tiny Pacific islands populated only by radioactive coconuts. Yet both eventually admitted to counting the Dakotas as one. (Also, the lesser travelled one thought that Kansas and Arkansas were the same place...) I believe that the quote that Mr. Pacific Islands gave me was, "I don't think South Dakota REALLY exists. I've never met anyone from there, and I've never met anyone who's been there."
So I guess the question is, spiesr... if that is your name... where are you REALLY from?

Amusing fact about South Dakota:
During the annual biker rally in Sturgis, so many people show up that for a week Sturgis becomes the largest city in the state.... says a lot about the rally, and a lot about how dismally underpopulated the place is.

what a progressive state. it must be lovely to live there.
If you wanna debate abortion, go resurrect the "Abortion" thread. This thread is for the express purpose of belittling South Dakota.

This thead is awesome and it incompasses all that makes the USA wonderfull.
Mitchell deserves this beating even though the hot air balloon museum is there, the corn palace kind of sucks.
The people at the airport near Rapid city were terrific.
And my favorite part of anyone in the US not knowing there is a south dakota is the fact that, not a single one of them doesn't know about that big thing carved into the mountain there.

Of course I knew there was a South Dakota.
Actually, isn't North Dakota the sucky one? I thought S.Dakota got 7 or 8 times the tourists and had a bigger economy etc etc.
I remember a West Wing episode once where the North Dakotans wanted to change their state name to just "Dakota", as they felt the word north, with its chilly connotations, was holding them back.
I didn't find this idiocy far-fetched
I'm a bit surprised that Americans don't even recognise a state name when it's given to them, but given that a few years back in a test in the US, over 40% of the 14 year olds asked thought the US discovered England.. well, I'm not THAT surprised they can't all spot their own country on a map.
