Also. In the pile of books I got from the library sales, was Allen Steele's The Tranquility Alternative, where the Space Age begins in 1944 with the launch of Das Amerika Bomber, a sub-orbital manned spacecraft aimed at New York. Not very far into it yet, but as usual with Steele, it's damn well written.

Oh, and I add my vote to the "read Man in the High Castle" brigade. one of the best books of a great writer (who sometimes got just too weird)

Ever read the Temeraire series? Takes place during the war between Napoleon and Britain, except it includes dragons.

I've been trying to think of the name of the author of Wolves of Willoughby Chase, which is a part of a series set in a somewhat alternate world (is it that the Stuart rebellion succeeds?)

Agreed... I was just going for shock value. Ice and Fire is more of an adult book. I haven't read Tolkien in 10 years.

Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World - by - Jennifer Armstrong

I've listened to this on audio book several times. It's all about Ernest Shackleton's ill fated voyage to Antarctica. What a great book, and a truly epic voyage. Amazing that they all lived.

There's actually a player on CC who writes a series of novels based on an alternative history of Rome, where the Republic didn't get corrupted into the Empire. I'm trying to think of his name, but I can't come up with it right now.

this is quite fun... an american small town is transported into the 30 year war... well they build aeroplans to combat a danish fleet and stuff:)

Hmmm....have you read the subsequent series that book spawned? And is it (are they) heavy with political / religious discussion or are they actioney? Love Weber but hate books that I feel the need to skim 10 out of 12 pages....
