Postby WL_southerner on Sat Jan 27, 2007 3:52 pm

if your up to date on it then you know its not the first time it has happen it seem to happen just before the next ice age hit us
only thing man is doing is speeding it up
is like we now know that the moon was once a planet off its own right and is slowly moving away
global warming can be stop but it seems no goverment is willing to stop it its very simple to do a simple act off fine spaying sea water just above the jet stream

I'm not completely convinced that it is occurring. Just remember, back in the '70s everybody was worried about Global Freezing.
I will admit that there have been somewhat unusual temperatures and weather patterns in the past one or two decades, but that could be caused by several factors:
1. Human Pollution of the Atmoshpere Not Allowing Heat to Escape
2. Natural Earth Phenomena
3. The Earth Orbiting Slightly Closer to the Sun
etc etc

global warming is a natural process. However, it has been sped up by us humans.

P.S... the only people who make really big deals of this are liberal bastards

I agreee with you on the liberal thing.

but I would like to see a link to a site that has PROOF that humans are speeding up global warming.

I agree with Stopper, no one on this thread has any true, scientific data that is backed up by even more true, scientific data, including me. One of the greatest pointss the book brought up for me was the idea of bashing scientists because of their funding. Just because a scientist is indirectly funded by the oil companies(or accused of being funded so by if they go against global warming) then their results arent necessarily wrong. Same thing about scientists funded by environmental groups. And wcaclimbing, i resent that you try and pull politics in there. The only connection to politics that I see is how liberals want to protect the environment. How can that be a bad thing? Science is objective and results can speak for themselves without politics.

From another thread I can tell you that no one's mind will be changed - global warming as a topic is much like politics and religion.

You need one more choice for the poll - yes, global warming is happening due to cyclical climatic patterns and man-caused reasons both.

It's far too complex of a topic to state simply that yes it's being caused by people ONLY or it's a result of a natural cycle ONLY. The truth is probably somewhere in-between.

No doubt the climate is changing. As to what's causing it, let the flames begin because that's the only thing you'll get from this thread.

Yes, Michael Crichton's book was controversial. You're right that just because a scientist is indirectly funded by the oil companies, then you can't just assume that their results are necessarily wrong. IF whatever studies they did were impartial, and any results they produced were unbiased, then you can't fault the conclusions they arrive at. But have you actually seen these studies, or had them interpreted by reliable sources (and Michael Crichton ain't one - he's a novelist)?

The (British) Royal Society (past alumni: Isaac Newton, Hooke, etc) took the unusual step of sending a letter to Exxon late last year, demanding they stop funding groups who spread the kind of rubbish we have seen on this thread...I have a link to a story about this, and the site itself contains the letter, if you feel like reading...

Thanks for the link, Stopper. I had not read that before. Do you know if Exxon replied to their request and if so how it read?

I don't agree with that. Political and religious beliefs are deeply held, (when they are held), but only point in a general way to views about the world. Global warming is a specific topic, and in THEORY, whether you accept it is happening (and caused by humans) or not, that shouldn't be dictated by your political & religious views, not least since socialism/capitalism/Christianity/Islam etc don't have any provisions for such a new-fangled phenomenon.

I suppose the PRACTICE is a different matter.

parasites

Postby Blumoki on Sat Jan 27, 2007 7:24 pm

The earth does what the earth wants to do…. We are just changing the time scales.
When the earth no longer requires the human parasites, it will make it impossible for us to stay.

The earth is all about balance with change, but we don’t want to change on the earths programme, we will be forced to move.

That's just from the paper I read every day, and I have to say I can't remember any response from Exxon - that's not to say they never did, but, in my more cynical moments, I get the feeling that Exxon didn't give two hoots.

EDIT: Still feels strange calling them Exxon. When I was younger, they were called Esso, but now that just causes Firefox to tell me I've made a spelling error.

You misunderstand me. I didn't mean to say that belief in global warming is linked to your political/religious beliefs, rather some people hold their beliefs about global warming as fervently as some do with deep religious or political convictions.

The earth is such a complex system that any models we create will be flawed. Science has historically proven to be wrong on many (most?) things. Even then, which studies do you trust? Personally I think there's a lot of scary evidence out there...

There's just no way that you can release that much extra carbon (among other things) into the atmosphere without having an effect.

Sure, living organisms and volcanoes spew out tons of gases into the atmosphere- and the system has ways of dealing with these (i.e. plant respiration) "natural" sources....but suddenly pile on all these extra emissions and there's no way it can't have an effect.

Sure there's a natural flux of temperature, going along with a natural flux of CO2 levels, and a natural flux of everything. In my opinion there's no way we haven't messed up this flux...a global booming population (doubling at insane rates) has had worldwide effects...to me scientific proof is nice, but simple logic can figure out we're having an effect.

I was just using my friend as an example. when i said i thought global warming was a natural earth thing, he freaked out, and i was wondering if thats just the way liberals do things (really strong opinions on stuff. The I'm right your wrong attitude). I dont really know what liberals represent .

when i posted about liberals earlier, i was responding to this post:

I was only going with the base of:
1. My friend is a liberal
2. He makes big deals about everything.

I was not trying to drag government into this

It doesn't matter what groups people belong to, some will have that attitude. It becomes a problem when you try to say a whole group acts like that.

Greenhouse gases (which seem to be causing global warming) are made up of mostly CO2 and H2O
Now correct me if I'm wrong but, DOESN'T EVERY ANIMAL BREATH OUT CO2?
and isn't our earth 70% H2O
So I don't think humans are the sole reason why global warming is happening
Plus there was an article that stated every time a volcano errupts, the amount of pollution thrown into our atmosphere is equilivant to 1,000 years of car pollution
I have also heard that the ozone layer is healing itself

wow, you are WAY wrong.

But I'll just show the first part... H20 Isnt a gas how could it be a greenhouse gas.

There is a gaseous form of water called vapor. The chemical composition is the same components.
