Every military strategist would agree that flanking (especially from multiple fronts) yields a significant advantage. SInce this game simulates military strategy, shouldn't the same rule apply?
I suggest a bonus for "flanking" an opponent on two or more sides.

Seems kinda hard to implement what you are saying. What defines the flank sides that get the bonus?

Maybe better have a bank bonus. This is a bonus which you will get for not cashing.

In battle it is to have troops on more than 1 side... considering some maps, it could be having troops on 3 or more sides...
