Great tourny Flex - well done.

One little complaint I have regarding the how the tourny played out for me ...
I topped my league and won the end of season cup and fairplay I was rewarded with a very good seeding.

Unfortunately for me that seeding meant absolutely nothing as my opponant was playing his chosen map and settings in the knock out round as a neutal ground. Rather frustrating that all them games I played were for no advantage.

I would not complain about maps, but the settings. I got to play 2 flat rate games and I was raped twice by the cards in them.

If you want to make it fair, you would have to make the neutral game in no cards. And make it at least 7 games long. To be frank, if i knew that in the finals i would be playing just 3 games, with 2 of them flat rate, I would not participate in the tournament to start with. You could as well throw a dice to decide a winner :x

I sound like a sore loser, maybe I am. But the tournament format was so nice in the beginning, and ending was so undefined till the very end and whatever was defined was such a disappointment...

Flat rate is perfectly fine as every team has a chance with that. No cards games for me personally I avoid b/c there is no reason to push an attack if you miss the first roll. In a card game, you have to decide if it is worth continueing the attack to try for a card when the dice go against you.

Personally I would've preferred the one game single elimination instead of the best of 3 series, but cest la vie. If you want a long series go to the NBA. If you want college hoops at its finest, stick with FLEX and stop the whining.

agreed...next year I will make a point of not allowing teams to play on neutral courts that were their home settings...so far that is the only matchup that had that happen this year, but you're right it would take away your advantage as the higher seed. Sorry about that.

I didn't mean to undermine flex's hard work for the tournament. He indeed work very very hard to run this. And great kudos to him for doing this.

Regarding flat rate. Can anyone explain how can you recuperate from your opponent cashing in 3 cards mixed set when you had to wait for the fifth card only to get the red set?

And I do realize that you try to mimic the real sport league here. Unfortunately I have to knowledge of the college hoops. But I would never suspect that the 1 game can potentially decide a winner of the year long tournament in any sport.

Essentially it maybe a very good replication of the college league, but it is certainly NOT a tournament in a search of 1vs1 champion.

You would be wrong in your assumption. The College basketball champion IS decided by a best of one single elimination 65-team tournament. The long regular season is only for seeding, otherwise it's completely useless.

Finding a 1v1 champion was never the goal of this league. The only goal was to replicate the college season, which Flex has done a perfect job of.

Hey flex,
Just wondering why Virginia Tech is already showing as advanced when our third game is still in progress, and as I see it, I still have a chance of catching up based on the tourney scoring system.
Thanks,

I may have jumped the gun a bit...but in the hundreds of games that I've seen and tested the team that wins two advances...we'll see how your map 3 turns out.

I just ran the #s and it's going to be close

good luck...of course if something changes, I'll switch the bracket accordingly.

I hate to reward a team for "running it up", but your strategy is playing by the rules Lince...I guess no plan, no matter how well tested, is completely fool-proof.

LSU won it's first round matchup 2 games to 1. Flex, you could just add a "disclaimer" that the "scoring system" is for fun only and that it is just a best of 3 series.

Actually, I already stated that the scoring system would be the official mark, so I'm off to do some more testing...probably come up with some sort of a troop-accumulation cap.

No kidding...I cover high school sports and a bunch of the kids have been out missing games and such...our little guy (20 months) was born preemie, so everything hits him pretty hard still. But it sounds like he's getting out today...he's been perking up and turning the corner, just takes him longer to recover from stuff at this point.

thanks for asking, flex

Re: 2008-09 College Hoops -- Brackets updated 3-15)

Postby flexmaster33 on Sat Mar 14, 2009 11:56 pm

Finally...a bracket update...hurray.
Nine of the Sweet 16 teams are set and the others should join soon. Sweet 16 games (available matchups) will begin by the end of the weekend/Monday morning.

Also, note the newsletter (bottom story)...Kansas State coach Lincecum busted my scoring formula sending his first-round game into overtime. So I've retested #s and come up with a "troop accumulation" cap that will go into effect for the Sweet 16.

Most (95 percent) of games would be completely unaffected by this, but it is being put in place to prevent teams from purposely "running up" the score in the future.

No offense to Lince...he was just doing what he could to survive, and it was all by the rules.

And my apologies to gehrem for not forseeing this dilemna before starting the tourney (I really tested, tested and tested some more...thought I had all the angles covered)

When I started the tourney, I was confident that having a "rounds played" cap would be enough, but in rare cases it has proven to need the troop cap. Again, most games wouldn't be affected by this cap change.

Anyway, good luck as we head into the Sweet 16...the NIT is starting to build toward it's Final Four where their games will also go under the scoring system format.

Hey dcc1220...you lead 36-9...no real need for the third map, but I'll keep it open through the weekend in case Rumondo wants to play it. If not, I'll kill it Monday morning.

Which trumps which, the score or winning the games? Is it possible to win two of three games but lose the overall score and not advance?

Officially, we are going by the scores, which should work out to who claims two of the three maps. At least it did in the more than 300 games I tested until Lincecum came along and busted my formula in the tournament :)

So far that's the only exception, he's playing an overtime map now in the first round.
I implemented the "army cap" rule now that should clinch that the winner of 2 of 3 comes out on top in the scores.
