How about this GT, since you're after me. DEFINE for me, what you think a liberal is.
When in America did it become a rule that you have to agree 110% with your party leaders on every issue?

Liberal generally means you're for more market regulation, higher taxes, especially on the rich, and more personal freedoms relating to civil rights. You're liberal on the personal issues, but not on the economic ones, which is known as libertarian.Juan_Bottom wrote:How about this GT, since you're after me. I suppose that's one way to "kick ass" in a thread - be as obstinate and thick as you can, until the other person gives up on you. It'll work on me every time.

Juan you dont have to be a party line voter to be party affiliated. But if a guy like you, who clearly tries to follow news and be in on government activities cant figure out what positions on key issues make you a liberal in American politics, then you are a bit behind the eight ball.

In the last election I found it moronic that the MAVERICK label was intended as a positive "distinction" while being considered a LIBERAL was once again a negative position.

The meaning of the word "Liberal" in US politics has through the twisted work of spin-doctors and smarmy political snake-oil salesmen like Obama, come from describing a friend of free enterprise and individual rights, to describing proponents of a weak form of social-democratic collectivism assaulting all moral backbone in society to make it more malleable to the government's Orwellian designs to apply on it its forces of social engineering.oVo wrote:In the last election I found it moronic that the MAVERICK label was intended as a positive "distinction" while being considered a LIBERAL was once again a negative position.

Nobody wants to talk about the dissent towards Obama in the Democratic party? Get used to it folks because more of it is coming via Pelosi, Reid and others.

Re: Longest Serving Democratic Senator Slams Obama on Power Grab
people have been discussing the possiblity that pelosi would be a bit of a counterweight to obama ever since the election and its not unreasonable really. I think because of the nature of his election and the huge amount of fanfare that was going on in his transition period, people have been slow to realize that he doesnt always have the universal support from within the ranks that people tend to believe he does.GabonX wrote:Nobody wants to talk about the dissent towards Obama in the Democratic party? I hope this teaches you a lesson about labeling people that you don't know or understand. That's what racist do ya know? And maybe a lesson about wasting your own time doing so.

mr. napoleon and myself had a short few post discussion about the above quoted is only primarily used in academic style discussion and debate, making everyones objections to your rather obvious misstep still relevant. IF you choose to be an ideologue thats fine, but know that in terms of the contemporary us political context, your just adding to confusion to label yourself incorrectly.Juan_Bottom wrote:EXACTLY.Napoleon Ier wrote:The meaning of the word "Liberal" in US politics has through the twisted work of spin-doctors and smarmy political snake-oil salesmen like Obama, come from describing a friend of free enterprise and individual rights, to describing proponents of a weak form of social-democratic collectivism assaulting all moral backbone in society to make it more malleable to the government's Orwellian designs to apply on it its forces of social engineering.

It's the same as Ron Paul refusing to leave the Republican party for the Libertarian one. Just because we can agree on some issues does not mean that I belong with you.
And wake up people, Ink made up a bunch of stuff about me in that thread so that I would fit into the "Libertarian" mindframe(qouting Peter Schiff & lowering taxes?). Duh, let's not make sh*t up and then act like they are facts. What are you guys, Christian now too? And besides that, EVERY political test that has been sent my why has called me liberal. So lick my hairy nutsack.
GT has green skin and loves to garden. He's a member of the Green Party.
Ink is pothead junkie and drives a Prius. He's also a member of the Green Party. But since Ink favored retaliation after 9-11, he must be a conservative. Conservatives like to bomb people. Conservative and Green, he is.
GT is in another country, and an Asian one, just like how Mao was in another Asian country... so since he has that in common with Communists, he must also be a Communist. Communist, yet Green.
There, now I'm making stuff up and twisting stuff around to label everyone else too. You're right Christians, this is awesome!

Translation (assuming you actually understood all of Nappy's big words, which I find doubtful): "I'm a libertarian, but we're the true liberals, not like those sheeple Obama supporters."Juan_Bottom wrote:EXACTLY.Napoleon Ier wrote:The meaning of the word "Liberal" in US politics has through the twisted work of spin-doctors and smarmy political snake-oil salesmen like Obama, come from describing a friend of free enterprise and individual rights, to describing proponents of a weak form of social-democratic collectivism assaulting all moral backbone in society to make it more malleable to the government's Orwellian designs to apply on it its forces of social engineering.

Re: Longest Serving Democratic Senator Slams Obama on Power Grab
It occurs to me know that I re-read Napoleons words that he is comparing European style "liberals" with American ones. I of course, was speaking about supposed political beliefs VS political actions taken over time. Our own politicians have politicized and bastardized their own beliefs by constantly offering us fake choices. So I am the core definition what it means to be liberal. You all want to expand it to include various froms of socialism and taxation, ect, and treat it as though any violation of your terms means that a person cannot be considered liberal.
Libertarians are not liberals! You can call someone a liberal Libertarian, or a Conservative Libertarian(whch is why I thought you were talking about parties at first), but they are not the same. Liberals believe too much in equal rights and re-distribution of wealth. Libertarians (mostly) believe that you keep what you earn, no matter what that does to the seperation of class. But from what I have seen most Libertarians are Conservatives.
And yeah, I do think that we already have too many taxes; & too many stupid taxes, even too much government control. But that does not mean that I am against taxes or regulation. Name one superpower that became one by taxing itself into prosperity. Well, other than Obama's future society.
No one person is 100% liberal, conservative, libertarian, communist, or anything. But you guys seem to think that you have to be.
It's your quiz hotshot, if you can understand it then my dog Daisy can understand it. WTF?
So you tell me that I don't know what I believe, and give me a test. So I pass the test (for the second time) and then you say that I can't understand the test. How about I kick you in the nuts to prove that you're not a guy. Then if you crumple like a beer can I'll just say that you don't understand pain.
It was your test genious, duh. I've always believed that reasoning skills were a point of pride for Atheists.
I'm getting annoyed that you are making stuff up and acting like they are facts. That's exactly why I am annoyed. You've turned Christian on us. Actually, go find and qoute exactly what you said before. Bring it back here....
Actually, I do find Obama's staunchest supporters to be sheep. If the shoe fits...InkL0sed wrote:Translation (assuming you actually understood all of Nappy's big words, which I find doubtful): "I'm a libertarian, but we're the true liberals, not like those sheeple Obama supporters."

Re: Longest Serving Democratic Senator Slams Obama on Power Grab
it is as if you think your going to break out into an infection if you come to terms with the label that best seems to define the numerous positions you post about and start threads on in the board. Dont worry! You wont get sick if you start to refer to yourself as a libertarian. No one is making anything up about you, you provide a fair amount of evidence in everything that you tend to favor as posts. Now granted its possible that on every single issue that you never talk about on these boards you favor liberal positions (again not refering to the classical definition of liberalism in this case) but i find it to be less likely.
Id repeat from my earlier post, if you choose to be an ideologue thats perfectly ok, you wont break out into hives. But stop quacking around if you dont want to be called a duck.

Words are what people think they mean. In different crowds liberal means two different, opposite things. I'm against labeling someone as one thing or another anyways, as that encourages groupthink.
