Re: LED ZEPPELIN
Cool! thanks for the links.
I've admired Billy Cobham's percussion skills ever since his Mahavishnu Orchestra days. If you aren't familiar with them I suppose this is a good place to start. Inner Mounting Flame was released a couple years before Spectrum. Around that time I made it to a Frank Zappa concert featuring Jean-Luc Ponty, Ian Underwood, Ruth Underwood, George Duke and more who played the biggest and best rock-jazz-fusion jams I've ever heard... they should have been recording that shit, because that music never made onto a recording.
My brain still goes to mush just thinking about it.
No shortage of great guitar players out there...
for a change of pace check out Al Di Meola and Larry Carlton.
or an even further change of pace... Phil Keaggy and Preston Reed.

"if my wings should fail below, please meet me with another pair."
well, my primary shoot opened, so luckily I didnt need the backup.

ZEPPELIN was my favorite band in high school way back in the 70s'.
I went to six of their concerts. I cant think of my youth without remembering those awesome events. ZEPPELIN will remain in my mind as the Greatest band of all time.

Reading those song titles just gave me the biggest chill. I think that I will go right now find and spin that vinyl. Maybe ill pull some pink floyd for desert.oVo wrote:"Welcome to the Jungle" is the best tune G&R ever produced and it's a shame they didn't hold together long enough to do more, but they can't hold a candle to Led Zep's second LP.
By that I mean there just isn't much to compare to . . .
Whole Lotta Love
What Is and What Should Never Be
The Lemon Song
Thankyou
Heartbreaker
Living Loving Maid
Ramble On
Moby Dick
and
Bring It On Home
Lately I've been listening to Jeff Beck's live at Ronnie Scott's which also totally kicks some butt,
with Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) Jason Rebello (keyboards) and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass).

Re: LED ZEPPELIN
That's a great idea... so I'm gonna GET THE LED OUT too.
Just loaded I, II, III, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti for a start
which has given me a craving for IN THE EVENING from In Through the Out Door.
btw...
I doubt Jimmy Page imagined he would be playing WHOLE LOTTA LOVE at the closing ceremony
of the Summer Olympics in Bejing China when that album was released back in 1969.

Tell me who wrote the Lemon Song. Tell me who successfully sued Zeppelin. Those hacks. Those worthless show ponies.
And their egos? Oh man, I hate those guys. Can't even be nice to their fans. Especially when that fan is just a little kid and they have to be total dicks.
f*ck those dudes. They didn't deserve their fame then, and don't deserve it now, and should be mocked forever more as the plagiarist scum they are.

Re: LED ZEPPELIN
Floating blues lyrics has existed for the entire history of that genre of music. The line, "You can squeeze my lemon til the juice runs down my leg" comes from Robert Johnson's "Travelling Riverside Blues" recorded back in the 30's. Um... it's a lyric and if you listen to that song and find any other resembance to the Led Zep "Lemon Song" do let me know. The song is also derivative of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and an out of court settlement was reached and Chester Burnett (Howlin' Wolf) was added to the song credits.
On Led Zeppelin I they cover two Willie Dixon songs ("You Shook Me" and "I Can't Quit You Baby") and on Led Zeppelin II the song "Whole Lotta Love" contains lyrics derivative of the Dixon tune "You Need Love/Woman You need Love"... give that one a listen and see how close they aren't. Regardless of that Dixon filed suit over "Whole Lotta Love" in the late 80's and received an out of court settlement.
In 1970 Chess Record's publishing Arc Music sued Led Zeppelin for copyright infringement for their cover of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bring It On Home" and it's comparisons to Willie Dixon's "Bring it on Back". Dixon had to sue Arc Music to receive compensation for his royalties and copyrights.
None of this was ever disputed and was all settled out of court because Robert Plant and Jimmy Page love Willie Dixon and he is a source of inspiration. They didn't steal his music, but they did appropriate a few lyrics. Listen to Robert Johnson (Elmore James, Willie Dixon, Son House, Muddy Waters, etc.) and you will discover the the source that drove a lot of rock music... Cream, Rolling Stones and a whole lot more.

You are quite correct in that many songs have been carried along throughout the evolution of various forms or styles of music. As a matter of fact, if you search back far enough in history, you will find that all music came from one source. A campfire and a happy caveman with a log and a stick.

Re: LED ZEPPELIN
I was trippin at the Physical graffiti concert in 74, or was it 75. They had this awesome light show during Kashmir. I gotta tell ya, it was an experience that I will NEVER forget. The music was ALIVE if that makes since. I was close enough to touch the stage, But I would swear that I was on the stage, somewhere within the music and lights. To this day I can sometimes get a flashback feeling when I hear that song.

While I realise you are just enjoying a good troll through the forum... it's still hard to let you simply revel in your ignorance. Willie Dixon, though overlooked for ages was HUGE to the blues in general and big to what went down in Chicago. Not just for writing and performing music, but also in his role at Chess Records arranging and producing songs. Late in life Willie "I am the Blues" Dixon had developed diabetes, lost his foot to the disease and was living in California and it is my belief that the "unchallenged" issue surrounding "Whole Lotta Love" was just a legit way for Led Zeppelin to give back to their legendary music hero. A tribute to the man who had such a dramatic impact on their musical direction and which would allow him to live comfortably in his final years.
Personally... it was bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers (and many many more) that introduced me to the music of Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon and Elmore James that had preceeded what I had been listening to.
I can still remember listening to Led Zep's first release and while "Good Times, Bad Times" and "Communication Breakdown" were instant gratification to my ears, it was "You Shook Me", "Dazed and Confused" and "I Can't Quit You Baby" that kept me coming back for more. Much like hearing Cream's WHEELS OF FIRE for the very first time with Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", Willie Dixon's "Spoonful", Chester Burnett's "Sitting On Top Of The World" and Booker T Jones & William Bell's "Born Under a Bad Sign" which all blew me away... "Politician" and "White Room" were also kicking in there big time.

Derivative?? How about EXACTLY THE SAME FUCKING SONG.
Please provide your source... if it is wikipedia, please stop being so easily misled. Listen to the two songs back to back. It's immediately apparent that Led Zeppelin is a bunch of plagiarizing hacks and should be tossed off the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge post haste.
