Well let's see I like Christmas, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day and New Years. The others are kind of meh except I'm not a fan of Valentines Day. It's time for strike's actor of the year.
This year's actor is Heath Ledger. Between his tragic death and his simply phenomenal portrayal of the Joker, Heath was an obvious choice and for this reason I have awarded him the actor of the year award.
The runners-up: Will Smith and Robert Downey Jr. While I never felt Will brought home any performances that were of particular praise. I enjoyed I Am Legend and Hancock was an interesting idea. He did get a lot of hipe behind his movies keeping him near the limelight. If it wasn't for Heath, Downey would have had my number one spot. Returning from a drug-related absence Downey hit gold in Iron Man but flat in an overly-hiped Tropic Thunder. Still his return generated enough buzz for me to keep him in the running.

I hated Dark Knight, and I thought Ledger was average, at best. I have no clue why people think he was good or that the movie was good.
I did like I am Legend.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
It's now time for strike's athlete of the year.
Once again a fairly obvious choice, I am going to stick with the ever popular Michael Phelps vote. I found other athletes to have had just as interesting a year as Phelps but due to his popularity and acheivement I went ahead and gave him the nod. With 8 gold medals, 7 world records, one of the greatest finishes of all time and a team mate guiding him to another great finish, he became one of the more talked about people of 2008 and probably the most talked about athlete. He not only over came Mark Spitz (Sp?) record but became the second most decorated Olympian of all-time and currently holds more gold medals than anyone else in Olympic history.

And now, band of the year.
Obviously, AC/DC. A band that has been around since 1975, and unlike most other old bands from that time, have actually stuck with what mattered most, the music and a good show. Especially with the release of Black Ice, and going on tour, they have proven, that in over 30 years, they are still one of the greatest rock (not glam, oh they hate glam style) bands of all time.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
We didn't get an invite to the mixed-race lesbian wiccan New Year party this year, so we're having a relatively low-key dinner at our house. Between kids and adults there'll be ten of us, and the only constraints are that the curlette is a veggie and her friend is peanut-allergic.
So, I've decided to go the Indian route -
Popadoms & chutneys for starters (tamarind, apple, onion and tomato and a standard cucumber raita)
Mains
pineapple and peanut curry ( peanuts served separately)
Badami Dum (stuffed baked spuds in a curry gravy)
soya Zafrani Kofta
Moghul lamb (should be mutton but I can't get that here)
Chicken Pasanda
side dishes
Tamatar Mumbai
saffron rice
mushroom bhaji
dessert
Sambooua (sp?) - fruit samosas
sticky honey rice balls in syrup (OK OK that's tai, not indian - sheesh BE a purist) - the kids would like me to make kulfi (Indian ice-cream) but I don't like it.
And of course some more home made choccies.
I'll probably get the curlette to make a "sherbert" drink of various fruits with mint so the kids can drink that (and the adults can have some as well as the wine). I don't like those milky drinks they do.

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
Well, I'm currently a bit jaded with everyday cooking, having to cope with a veggie alternative to the simplest family scoff, but I do love cooking for special occasions.
Actually we'll have to make a special point of celebrating 5 hours early - when it's New year in the UK.
One year we went to my brother's (he lives in Luxembourg and works for the EU) - there was a right international mix there, and we celbrated "New Year" on the hour every hour for about 5 hours. I think. It gets a bit vague towards the end...

Well of course because if I was on topic I would have to follow someone else's topic. That really doesn't agree with my alpha male type personality which is why I think I would make a great leader. Speaking of leaders I always felt that Caesar was a very cool character of study. He seemed to be a really cool guy and an ass at the same time, just like my old P.E. teacher. She used to insist that I was right handed which of course is false but despite this I always thought she was cool, though not in an actual tempeture kind of way. Speaking of tempetures what's up with global warming. I mean the polar bears are all drowning and the penguins are like "wtf man". Speaking of which, I've never really liked penguins. They've always seemed overrated to me. Like a movie that is supposed to be really great but then you see it and it sucks big time. Movies are great though. Have you seen the new Tom Cruise movie? I've never been a big fan of Tom Cruise but this one looks like it might actually be good. Speaking of cruise, I like to cruise down the road in my car. I hate the constant stop and go of automobile traffic. It's a waste of time and gas. Speaking of gas, thank goodness, prices are down at least for the meantime. It seems like they were going up faster than yeast in an oven. I hate cooking by the way. I've never been good at it and I've never taken the time to learn how to cook right. I used to always say that I'm as likely to blow up the microwave as I am to properly cook a pizza. As for explosions, I really like them. They're cool and bright and they make those loud sounds which are great. I actually don't really like loud sounds though. They're all loud and stuff. Man do I have a lot of stuff today. I have to clean the house and it will take me most of the day. Days are too short though. If I had my way every day would consist of 36 hours so that we have 12 more hours everyday to do what we want to do. I want to go to Six Flags. The problem is it's closed this time of year, which is why winter sucks. It's cold and rainy yet the coldest days never coincide with precipitation so you never get any snow. Which reminds me, I find avoiding yellow snow to be very good advice. Mainly because whereever there's yellow snow a dog doo snow cone is always close by. We live close to the river here. In fact we're closer than a stone's throw away. Speaking of stone's throw, it's only a stone's throw till New Years. I guess that means I should be rapping this up.
By the way, I don't really get the crazy part.

I think everything gets vague towards the end. I think it's the decreasing memory as we get older.
Now what were we talking about?

Re: the longest thread, thread - Occasionally NSFW
Now for Strike's events of the year.
Now this one was a clear cut winner as to the more important one but I wanted a less boring one to back it up (plus this one's international).
So event # 1. The elections. Yes the long tedious project of selecting a candidate from all parties taking up our precious time. Obviously, for those who watch the news, there was nothing you heard more about more than the elections in some form or another and even if you just watched tv you still heard about it from commercials and possible jokes built in to make fun of candidates.
Event # 2. The Olympics. The largest athletic competition in the world. A rather interesting one this time around as Michael Phelps went for 8 gold medals and 7 world records and Usain Bolt (sp?) impressed in track. Plus the controversy over the Chinese gymnasts and suspected age violations.
