Show similar games

Post by InkL0sed »

Concise description:
  • Show similar games before starting a new game
Specifics:
  • This would work in the same way that identical games are shown before starting a game. If there are no identical games, similar games would be shown instead; similar games being games with only one setting that is different from the one you chose. I don't think they'd need to be shown when there are identical games, but I don't see why it would matter, either way.
This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Often times, that one setting makes no difference in the game play, and the would-be game starter may choose to join a similar game if there are no identical games. This would have the same benefits as the display of identical games; that is, to encourage people to join rather than to start games.

I would greatly disagree:
  • freestyle vs sequential - huge difference
  • fog vs no fog - difference in how people interpret the map
  • esc vs flat vs no card - difference in how people attack (less attacks in no cards, almost mandatory attacks in flat)
  • standard/terminator vs doubles/triples/quads - huge difference
Granted, something like standard vs terminator makes almost no difference at all (at least if it is a card game). I would like to see this, but the reasoning is lacking a little.

Some settings (5 vs 6 vs 7 vs 8 player) can make no noticeable difference. Also the exact same settings on a slightly different map don't change much in the game play. Could be useful, but maybe at some logic to rule out the different game settings that change the game by a great deal.

ie, 2 player is not similar to anything. 3 player is similar to 4 player. 5 player is similar to 4 and 6 player.

Classic is similar to Asia/Europe/USA/all standard maps. All conquest maps are similar. All objective maps are similar.

Build full logic to that effect and the tool would seem useful more often. It's more work though, so you could just stick with the one-off setting originally mentioned ;)

And there still aren't going to be very many similar games, I don't think.
