People often still fear death, I am not going to try to explain what all was going on in her head because I don't know. All I know is a family lost their daughter and sister because the courts would rather starve her. The former husband got his big life insurence policy and she got to suffer for 7 days while her lips cracked and bled and her organs began to shut down.

i don't fear death, or necessarily even fear dying. I fear pain. I'd rather die in a free-fall from a plane where the trip down would be a thrill-ride, followed by an instantaneous, painless death than be impaled by a rusty iron pole and survive thanks to some miraculous operation and then continue to have a normal life. By the end of it, I believe that she was begging to go home. Though, I do sense cynicism in your tone, it seems to me that you only made this thread to re-hash the tragedy that was her case, and seek to bring the shadow of hypocrisy to the idea of faith and religion. If this is the case, then shame on you.

Death is not the same as life, it is in fact, the end of life. They are not "one in the same". I believe that someone can cherish life because they fear death.

Pain is only temporary, only an illusion, and an inevitable consequence of existence. You must learn to overcome pain. Trust me, it gets easier; your threshold increases.

I was talking about death, not the unknown. You know what death is, right? You've seen death, right? Well, maybe not. A lot of Americans have no idea what death looks like. I'm not trying to be confrontational, I just want to keep a dialogue going.

And according to the poll, there are a number among us who do not fear death. The next part of this thread, after we get everyone who is going to reply, to reply, is to begin inquiring into WHY people do not fear death.

Not a bad idea with the freefall. From what I understand though most people die from the anticipation of death than the fall when in those circumstances. Heart attack as you see the ground fast aproaching. Not a fan of the rusty metal pole...I am afraid of that!!

I would just think of it as a prolonged parachute jump. It would be fun, in my opinion. as for the pole, I was trying to think of something painful (more so than a paper cut, lol) but survivable, as opposed to deadly, but painless. I choose painless every time.

I've been an atheist since I was 8 years old. I used to fear death when I was young. Now I do what I can to avoid it but I no longer fear it. I spent too much of my young life worrying about things that never happened. I'll fight to stay alive as long as I can. Once your dead there is nothing left to worry about. It will be like before you were born. No worries, mate. As long as your fighting your alive. You'll never know when you lose the fight because there is no afterlife. I take life one moment at a time. So even if I was deathly ill I would say "I may die soon but I'm alive now. So I'll make the best of my situation." It bothers me to hear people say "There must be more to life than this." What a narcissistic view of life. Everyone throughout history got the same deal. Your thrown into this world and given the chance to live a life. Live the best life you can and although you won't look forward to death you'll be ready when it comes.

Good for you. I believe that that final moment of your life is the culmination of all that you have done. It is that time that you reflect, for however much time that you have to do it in, and determine if you have lived a life satisfactory to your own judgment.

All she needed was a feeding tube to keep living and he had it pulled and she literally starved to death from dehydration while conscious and perfectly aware of pain.
