What should a new member know before they start playing?
Greetings,
Is there anything a new member to this site should know? I have read both the instructions and the rules, however I am fairly sure that there is more that I should know starting out than how to play the game. I am talking about things such as etiquette.
Sincerely,
Dilbert

I have one more question. After going through the games waiting tab for quite a while, I randomly picked a game to play. Since then 4 people have dropped out. Am I supposed to join a different type of game?

Probably because 99% of the people that are new to the site quit within an hour after they joined, making the rest of us waste a lot of time while waiting for them to miss enough turns so they are kicked out of a game.
And I do not appreciate having two high ranked players drop out of my game, soon to be a third, since no colonel will stay in a game with corporals and below.

I apologize for that. I have dropped the game and am not planning to join any more until some more people answer this.
That was one good example of what I am asking about in the first statement in this topic.

Join whichever games you want, as long as you intend to play them. Be wary of games that are full of new recruits though: some players will set up games and block any established players from joining, just because they know some new recruits will quit, and the others will be frustrated with the wait.
You should know that there are a lot of add-ons in http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=59 that you will find useful: BOB will count your territories and armies (and a lot of other things); Clickable Maps will let you play without having to use dropdowns; the dice analyzer will keep a record of every roll you throw (in case you suspect CC rigs the dice.... they don't).
Play it like you would play Risk (ie. take your turns, don't give up, and try to win... there's no glory for second place).
Don't take things too seriously, and have fun.

You can get rid of the ? next to your name quickly by joining and finishing a quick 4 1v1 games so people will know you're actually here to play rather than a hit and run which ruins things for people.

Yeah, I would stay with Classic style maps that true. It might be 5 and not 4.
I'd go with these maps to start-they're relatively simple classic style-no gimicks
Classic, Africa, Doodle Earth, Indochina, Ireland, Netherlands, Australia, Portugal, Ancient Greece, BeNeLux, Mongol Empire, Asia, Alexander's Empire, Germany, British Isles, Canada, Hong Kong, Middle East, USA, Caribbean, Discworld, France, South America, Brazil, Europe, Arctic, Iberia, Cairns Coral Coast, North America, Battle for Australia, World 2.1
Those are all relatively simple classic style game play without gimmicks like Bombardment, one way passages etc

Thanks for the replies guys. I rejoined the Iberia game last so I could prove myself to be punctual. Seems not too complicated yet, although no one has taken a turn so far.

Expect these type of 8 player standard games to take a long time.Dilbert wrote:Thanks for the replies guys. I rejoined the Iberia game last so I could prove myself to be punctual. Seems not too complicated yet, although no one has taken a turn so far.
If you want to see some action now, try going onto live chat (callouts chat room) to see if anyone is setting up a real time game.
Good luck.

I have realized that since the game has started, but I am old and do not like too much action.gdeangel wrote:Expect these type of 8 player standard games to take a long time.Dilbert wrote:Thanks for the replies guys. Where is that located?gdeangel wrote:If you want to see some action now, try going onto live chat (callouts chat room) to see if anyone is setting up a real time game.

(Please forgive me for the many different edits I made to your post, I am trying out different features of this site right now.)

A good thread to see would be this one, it will show you which maps are difficult or not, and which are easier.
For now, i would advise you to play standard gameplay maps, and maps which are easy.
Stick to sequential for now i would think, freestyle has a lot of abuse.

Re: What should a new member know before they start playing?
I did join several 2 player games, however I lost both very quickly and found no reason to join any more. It might only be my perception, however I found that in both of the games, luck played the largest role. So I have decided to stick with games that have a few more players.barterer2002 wrote:You can get rid of the ? next to your name quickly by joining and finishing a quick 4 1v1 games so people will know you're actually here to play rather than a hit and run which ruins things for people.

Some etiquette things I picked up quick:
If you want an alliance, MAKE SURE you post it in GAME CHAT.
Don't complain about poor dice or some idiot suiciding you out of the game. It is going to happen.
As much Risk as you might have played with your friends or family, you haven't played as much as everyone here. Expect to lose at first. You may be smart, and have an idea about strategy, but people here are GOOD. I went in and talked like I knew a lot and was quickly shown that I didn't.

Don't deadbeat, and by this I mean don't miss any turns. You will understand why the more you play.

Alliances HAVE to be posted in Game Chat... It's against the rules if you don't.
In heaven... Everything is fine, in heaven... Everything is fine, in heaven... Everything is fine... You got your things, and I've got mine.

Don't start 1 vs 1 games, only join them until you're familiarized with the site.
