Why would it be a failed thread? We're just waiting for the mods to create the clan.Snorri1234 wrote:Yay for failed threads.

Re: A new private civil discussion forum
Huh. Well, kids, I suppose I'll wish you luck. My hopes for this clan are obviously low enough to give up on it. It seems to me that a clan with a few ground rules would be the perfect opportunity for pure discourse between all points of view. But any attempt to restrict that can't be expected to reach any sort of potential of worth as far as debate. So I wish you luck, and wash my hands of it.

Re: A new private civil discussion forum
It's better to aim high and miss than to not try at all. Throwing a wet blanket on the whole thing won't help at all. As many people have stated repeatedly, if the forum really doesn't turn out, it's very simple to click "Resign Selected."Neoteny wrote:Huh. Well, kids, I suppose I'll wish you luck. So you say ground rules would be good, and then you say people shouldn't be restricted??Neoteny wrote:It seems to me that a clan with a few ground rules would be the perfect opportunity for pure discourse between all points of view. Restricted entry, of course. Moderation of discussion will, of course, be necessary, but an initial screening will serve to stifle debate.Ray Rider wrote:So you say ground rules would be good, and then you say people shouldn't be restricted??Neoteny wrote:It seems to me that a clan with a few ground rules would be the perfect opportunity for pure discourse between all points of view. I suppose in the end, at worst, it will be a waste of time.

Re: A new private civil discussion forum
Why dont you guys just start your own civil discussion forum. You know,....build it.
And you can all meet there and be happy. In one extra click!!!

Re: A new private civil discussion forum
Where is it, can't wait to see what the "christians" do with their new clan dedicated to civil discussion. Will they crusade out to other forums and slaughter the heathens? Will they pray on games? Will they hold secret inquisition courts about the blaspheming players? Will they create multis to act as mercenaries in god's name?
Or will they just talk to each other and leave the rest of us alone? -- fat chance.

Re: A new private civil discussion forum
You do realize that this thread/clan idea was started by an atheist.........right?
The Jesus Freak's clan has about 150 members and that forum is active. Why would we need another one? The idea here is for people with differing viewpoints to discuss them without wasting time with petty put-downs and the like.

You seem to be talking as if this is some Christian place where we are planning to go and talk. We've got that. The point here is to talk with people interested in getting deeper into topics of discussion without dealing with trolls, who seem to think the insult is the highest form of discourse.

"Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill."
Duane: You know what they say about love and war.
Tim: Yes, one involves a lot of physical and psychological pain, and the other one's war.

Still don't see what any of that has to do with my post.
Re: A new private civil discussion forum
Wow. Viewing the poll results just now, I was shocked to learn that 79% of voters are liberal.

Since "millitant atheists" are excluded from the conversation it does seem like a place where Christians don't really wanna hear any criticism.

Liberal meaning... restricting discussion? I must not understand you here...HapSmo19 wrote:Wow. Viewing the poll results just now, I was shocked to learn that 79% of voters are liberal.
A forum encouraging civil debate, I can support. A forum discouraging all viewpoints, I cannot.

One: Should the OP have not asked himself these same questions?Ray Rider wrote:Please read the forum guidelines:The Guidelines wrote:The “l337” poster knows to ask himself/herself 3 basic questions before pressing the all powerful “submit” button:
One: Is my post really necessary or is it just mental diarrhea?
Two: Am I trolling or feeding a troll?
Three: Really?
Two: Are people not aware of the options(ignore list) and devices(scroll wheel) that are already in place to deal with these issues?
Three: Who would comprise the body of the Gestapo that would have the final say of who gets to post there?
Four: I'll ask again: Why dont you just start your own "private civil discussion forum"? (A $30 monthly bill between sixty+ of you is less than fifty cents each)
Five: Why does it have to be here?
These are honest, non-trolling questions. Would someone in favor of this new forum please answer them?

Okay, and that further's your point how?Snorri1234 wrote:Actually, he's an agnostic.CrazyAnglican wrote:You do realize that this thread/clan idea was started by an atheist.........right?
seems pretty obvious what it has to do with it there. It wouldn't be our forum any more than it would belong to any other viewpoint.mpjh wrote:Where is it, can't wait to see what the "christians" do with their new clan dedicated to civil discussion. .............

Nobody is being excluded due to viewpoint, tactics however are a factor.
