[Delete] Prompt Button in SEQUENTIAL Speed Games

Post by jiminski »

Prompt Button to stop people missing go's in speedgame

Specifics:
  • Each round, after 2 to 2.5 minutes have elapsed, a Mail Icon appears next to the Green circle which denotes it is their turn.
Any player can press this once (one message only from all other players) and an automated message is delivered to the player who's turn it is, detailing remaining time left to play, along with Gamelink.
This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • People will miss less go's
  • I will not be driven insane by people who wish to play but are in 6 other speed games and simply forget.
  • Less friction between serial late players and mailers; the message is automated so no personal abuse will be enclosed

*I am also toying with it giving a small electric shock when pressed ... getting progressively more powerful until, on deadbeating the misser gets 10,000 volts into the crotch area... (though i think some would miss more for kicks, deadbeating would largely drop off ... and after the 3rd shock the phrase 'Dead-Beating' would take on a whole new meaning!)

Does the nature of speed games really mean - even when you are waiting for a player who apparently needs prompting - that clicking the player name to get to their profile and then clicking the PM link is not workable ?

hmm is it workable Cic.. aaaaaaaaa no! and i should know, as i have been doing it constantly in Public Speedgames over the last 48 hours (more coffee.. get me some coffeeeee) ... Shall i explain? hmm well you click.. you type a concise yet friendly..'i am just being helpful and not bossy in tone' note.. you check back in another Tab to see they have not started .. you refresh as the auto refresh is flawed ... you send.... you forget to put a bloody title in .. the message does not send .. you Type "speed Game" again, for the 20th time .. you check back, as it has taken so comparatively long that they may have started in your desperate absence... they have not started.... you press 'send'... and in the time you should have been thinking about the board ... you have sent a message to a grateful recipient who keeps forgetting due to their perpetual and crazed hitting refresh on an additional Freestyle Speedgame game.. in the duration of which they are fitting in a sequential SpeedGame or 2 to quell their goldfish sized threshold of concentration.

Now in the grand scheme of things this is not a great burden to suffer .. but within the realm of our pathetic on-line, CC Gaming lives, it is a great big, steaming, curry-jobby of a pain in the posterior.

i thank yaw...

PS is not having a troop and card count workable ... can we function in reality without perpetual reference to Wikipedia ... could we do without the colour mauve!?

Well probably the answer to these and many more questions... is in fact: 'YES!' ... but modern life is filled with crap and nonsense! let's face it, i would have no role at all if it were not! ;)

That is particularly invigorating thought. So much so that I'm coming round to your idea.

Prompt button sends an automated PM from admin; which as you say would only be sent once triggered by which ever player ran out of patience first. Simply advising that "One or more of the other players in speed game 123456 remind you that you have only 1 minute 23 seconds remaining to take your turn."

As you say this avoids you having to compose the 'softly softly' message and avoids the possibility of recipients taking exception to a named individual sending the PM.

Also it might be useful to have the prompt button only appear after half the time to take the turn had elapsed; ie after two and a half minutes?

Perhaps and automated message saying 'Sir- I do believe you started the wrong game- freestyle is only for players with no skill.'

I'll have to admit, you've come up with better ideas. ;)

Good point. Unavailable in Freestyle I should think. Sequential only.

Yes i would say so mate. Sequential is the one where delaying play is of no benefit, so the recipient should be grateful at the heads-up and the other players joyous at a faster game.

(though only one mail can be sent to any single player before the mail icon is turned off each round.. so it would not be a great drama either way i reckon)

I think it should be adjustable in the UCP if they get prompts, just as they have the ability to get a PM when a speed game starts

Jimi's leaving, and he's taking his ball with him.

Seriously though jim. Why are you even bothering to bump these threads? They were so old and dead, that they might as well have already been deleted. Are you that starved for attention, or are you really just looking for people to say, "No! Don't leave. We love your suggestions"?

If you're not careful, people might start calling you the drama-queen.
