Ribbons instead of Medals and other tweaks.

Concise description:

• The medal system should be changed to a 'ribbon system'. And should be changed to a top% instead of total games.

Specifics:

• The Medals are cool and all, but from a design perspective, they are gaudy as sin. They make people in the forums look like some gothic pinata. If people serving in the military got a medal for every little thing they would look rediculous. Instead of medals, they get ribbons, which are compact and would fit nicely into a users profile. If you don't know what a ribbon is, look here. They scale well. Also the medal system should be change to a % system, where the top 5% of players with the most doubles wins get gold, the top 10% get silver, and the top 15% get bronze.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:

• Many people want more medals for various things. Are these extra medals going to fit anywhere? The forums already look like some wacky post WW1 austrian social event. Any more medals would look even more ridiculous. just ditch the medals aspect, they already have the ribbons. No offense to WM, the medals look great, but there is just too many of them on EVERYONE. If there were only a handful of actual medals, like top 1% of doubles players or something, then that would be cool and you could wear it with pride. But now everyone has a ton of medals, espeically since the gold silver bronze differentiation is slight, that it makes all the medals seem kinda... blah. Everyone knows its number of games and not skill that gets medals. So lets change medals to ribbons and add very select medals for top achievements.
• You guys better take care of this quick because with inflation, the medals which are tied to hard amounts are actually losing their value by the day.

From a graphics side, I believe ribbons were considered in the early beginning, but they weren't very exciting or enticing, and numerous just looked like an uncessary wall of color clutter. But we'll see how the Medals system progresses, keep in mind this is only the first tabbling into it.

Gamereplays.org, a site I used to visit frequently (not so much anymore) used the ribbon system (although they called it medals hehe). People tried to get them just as much, and the compact way they were designed made it so it didn't like gaudy, just as these medals do. I think teh medal sizes should be about 66% of the size tbh, they're way too huge, but I wouldn't mind keeping the medals if they could look smaller and compact.

There the medals were displayed (of course this site would have it on the right). But right under the profile, some people even got up to 15 ish ribbons, so you'd have like 5 rows. This site instead of using "levels" for ribbons (which were all different designs depending on what level you achieved), you would of course just use bronze/silver/gold. It looks a lot better compact imo. You can make it look compact still with medals though, doesn't have to be ribbons.

Medal sizes are a forum code issue. We'll see what we can do about the sizes in the future.

I dunno about the medal/ribbon thing, but I know I hate the % idea. If that were enacted, very few people would be able to earn very many, and most people couldn't earn any at all. The medals are less competitive, and more goal-oriented-- each person is on their own, personal quest to earn them all. If you earn them all, that's awesome (you just won CC!), but that shouldn't prevent someone else from doing the same.

Agreed - it should be like gamerscore on the 360. Not too much skill orientated, more personal goal orientated.

Well many armies actually DO award a medal for almost every little achievement made. And they are mainly awarded for PERSONAL achievements so many people have the same medals (just as here ).

Wrong. They ARE awarded medals, a medal being a little shiny piece of metal hanging from a colour coded piece of fabric. But when they run out of space (as your Petreus) they are allowed use a ribbon with the same colour coding instead. Most countries have very clear etiquette rules governing how to carry medals that sorts such issues.

But I agree with that they scale well and we could very well be using ribbons instead of medals here, especially for those with many medals.

Ohhh elitist. I don't like that at all. I see medals (both here and IRL) as showing personal achievement and also (as IRL) I think a medal earned shouldn't be rescinded lightly.
