Turkey and EU
What is your opinion? Should they become a member of the EU?

Actually I didn't vote anything. I think they should join EU but they have some things to do before that.brooksieb wrote:i bet you any money this guy voted no lolNtetos wrote:What is your opinion? Should they become a member of the EU?

Theres more to it still after Cyprus right? I mean i know cyprus is the big one, but i was under the impression there were a number of the criteria that they werent really that close to meeting, which was causing some friction.
And i thought there was a general image problem with letting turkey in from a number of member countries right now.

You've got to be making considerable progress towards being ready to use the Euro. You've got to have low public debt, low inflation, a stable exchange rate, (a couple of other things, too... can't recall). To my understanding, Turkey is farther away from the requisite economic levels than any other potential EU member. At its core the EU is an economic agreement, and Turkey is not yet capable of adhering to its terms.ignotus wrote:Yes. What do they (Turkey) got to do to get to the EU?btownmeggy wrote:The convergence criteria?ignotus wrote:So can you name them?btownmeggy wrote:Yeah, I do too, but I think the "after fulfilling requirements" position is certainly justifiable.
Now, if you want to talk about the EU as a political organization, that's a whole different issue...
