Do you mean the word itself or the usage?

If you got a vision of someone evaporating at the epicenter of a nuclear explosion, you'd report it as "Mankind shall be wiped away by a great fire."

Not "And the flesh shall rot" blah blah blah.

Sure, he's got the nuke, but on a technological level he doesn't really have the ability to do much damage before he gets all retaliated upon.

It's possible, but more than likely he wasn't shown a nuclear event. He was probably shown a vision of a guy rotting.

Jay - vtmarik keeps on making an excellent point and I want to make it again, because this is a problem with fundamentalist readings of the bible - there is no such thing, only your interpretation.

People living in pre-xtian times didn't have nuclear bombs, or microwaves, but they did have rotting food and corpses. Organic things decay slowly. I think it's safe to say that every human being that has ever lived has known about this. If god decided he had nothing better to do than send some dude a vision of a nuclear blast, why would the sendee describe it in terms of putrefaction, a very slow and heat-free process?

Explain please.

We will have backup, because N. Korea is closer to Japan than us, and England has and will always be our ally.

Just because the world is mad at us over the Iraq thing doesn't mean they won't team up with us if there's a nuclear threat. It's all a matter of degree.

why would/should England help us? England knows helping us, means putting themselves at risk. they barely survived WWII bombings. how will they survive nuclear bombs?

A) If N. Korea is going to attack us, they'll go at our allies too.
B) They have nukes too.
C) They're part of the UN, and even more than that they're part of NATO
D) While their attitude towards us regarding Iraq is quite sour, the greater issue of nuclear war is a pretty good reason to let bygones be bygones.
E) They'll have to, as per their international agreements.

*shrugs* Yeah, but if it is all part of the plan, then why worry? If it's fate, then let's try to enjoy ourselves in the meantime.

indeed. in my opinion, fate is how you look at it. EX, if you believe something/someone controls fate, it's God's Plan. if you don't it's fate. i think, even if most don't want to admit it, they believe something in this world controls everything. in my case, it's God

And does my interpretation - that the word rotting means to putrefy, to decay, to decompose, and not to vapourise instantly in a flash of searing heat - carry less weight because i am an atheist?

I don't know heavy... But someone living in BC who see a vision of a nuclear blast and people being vaporized will NOT describe it as we would. This may be a hard thing to grasp but you try it.

Using only words and concepts known at the time descibe these things from an BC perspective:

a laser beam

a attack hellicopter

gravity

a space shuttle

the internet

cell phone

I'll be waiting

what for?

In BCE times they knew about fire intense enough to melt iron and they knew what happened to animal flesh when it is subjected to strong heat. They also knew that rotting is what happens when you leave food or dead bodies out in the air for a few days. Why would you depend for your prophecy on a word that means to decay slowly when BCE man (who was being inspired to write this by an inerrant god, remember) could have used any number of more fitting phrases - 'disappear in a blast of heat', say, or 'have his flesh stripped instantly from his body by a white light'?

or - and here is my point - if, as you say, BCE man was simply using the only concepts he understood to describe something he could not explain, then why do we have to take genesis literally? Could BCE man not have been inventing a description of the universe with his limited understanding?

You can't have it both ways.

I suspect it's because you disrespect the concerted effort of the allies winning world war II, by describing it as "saving their butts."

Just because your soldiers went to England to have sex with the locals and complain about the temperature of the beer.

Followed by you dropping the only nukes ever used on people.

Ok people I don't think we can have a good debate on what the word rotting meant unless we can get the origional Greek or Hebrew manuscript in here.

But I would think the use of rotting to describe flesh being nuclearly removed from a skelleton before it hit the ground might be valid.

Isn't radio active material described as decomposing which is even another word for rotting?
