Potential classic revamp?

I like the idea of a revamp. They say if it aint broke, don't fix it. That's true... but even if something is not broken, you can still improve it. That's the way forward, to progress. As time passes, the map will look dated, as people get better at doing the maps etc. The current classic is not a work of art, and I don't see any problem in updating the graphics.

I'm completely in favour of it.
The main thing that irks me about the current map is all the little fighter jets and navy ships; those 'date' the map in a contemporary war setting.
I'd much rather have something with a more classical layout.

Alex..? Alexander the Great, my Commander, what's wrong? Did someone leave you negative feedback again?

...but quickly, remove the current draft because people will look at it and then vote 'no' because it doesn't look very polished yet!
I suggest keeping the actual design in Foundry while it's being tweaked and perfected, THEN do a poll.
Also, a perfectly fine option to me would be to offer both the old classical map as well as the new one, at least until any overwhelming preference gets established.
Or, I bet it would also be relatively easy for one of the Greasemonkey scripts (BOB, etc) to make the map style a preference; switch between the old one and the new one just by changing your preference.

Yes, I would absolutely support this. I don't support a change of gameplay (I believe it's very fine as it is).
The classic map is one of the very first maps you play as a beginner to CC. So it at least was for me.
The following issues with the map is what bothered me most. It made me angry and frustated.
(some of them, perhaps all, already mentioned)
Blue on a blue continent or Blue on a red continent.
Tiny - TINY - attack ways (Western Europe <-> North Africa, Middle East <-> East Africa) for instance.

Got to agree. Somehow our Classic is special because it was the original CC map but, equally so, the real (if you can use that word) Classic is also rather special.EmperorOfDaNorth wrote:...but quickly, remove the current draft because people will look at it and then vote 'no' because it doesn't look very polished yet!

As for who should make it, I really don't think it is yours to decide gimil, on this occassion. The Foundry has always been, imo, a democracy. No map would ever have made it without support (just look how long it took to get WWII Eastern Front done before qwert gave in) and unless there is overwhelming support for you doing it, I don't think it is fair that you should take on such a large project by yourself.

I come here not as a new CA, not representing the foundry. Im here a a member of the community with an intrest in revamping the classic map myself. The purpose of this thread is to decided wether or not i should invest my time in the project, not to decided the best course of action to carry out a revamp.RobinJ wrote:Got to agree. If there is support (which there is) i would go through the proper chaneels to gain permission etc for carrying out this subject.
What do you know about map making, bitch?

If the 'powers that be' decide to allow a revamp of the Classic map, then there should be some sort of open contest... perhaps some sort of 'template' with pre-drawn borders/army circles could be made available (to ensure continuity of the XML), and an open contest to decide the most popular choice...
I'm sure I've read several threads in the Map Ideas Forum suggesting a revamp of Classic, and I'm sure that lots of people would be interested in giving it a shot.gimil wrote:I come here not as a new CA, not representing the foundry. Lets get the debate about whether the map should be revamped at all out of the way, before we have any discussion about who is going to do it.

Please don't. North east asia looks like you ran out of room and crammed it all together. Many of the countries loook like fat blobs. What is up with the colors too? Please this is not good enough. Sorry for the harsh criticism just had to speak my mind. The classic map needs revamping but not like this.

risk trying reading the full thread before deciding to comment. There is NO draft for a classic revamp, this thread is only for discussion, tel has posted what he would do.Risktaker17 wrote:Please don't. Leave it alone
please
It's a nice and it's called Classic for a reason. You don't take Beethoven's Für Elise and make a mix from it. If you want to make a mix then you'll take Britney Spears Oops, I did it again and mess with that one

people are too scared of change...the classic map is fine the way it is....but why not dress it up a bit? that would be fine with me....i think it's a good idea.....don't think i would trust DiM too much with this project LV ....his maps are way too "abstract" for classic .... i'm afraid he would carry that over to this project if he was to work on it and i don't think that is what this map needs.....if it really needs anything at all....but i would be ok with a little tweaking for sure!

I love how everyone keeps saying "Why not use the map from the actual board game" and such. The current classic map is a version of the map from the board game....I believe it is the version from the 90's. Risk has been around for decades and there have been several variations on the map.
I am pro-revamp but only if its in the form of a contest....that way the community gets to decide what style of map is chosen.
Also, I think the current map could be used and many of the problems fixed without a full revamp. Keep the same image and style, and just move the army shadows so they don't cover the country names...and lighten the shadows in Europe so you can read blue numbers there. That way many members wouldn't even notice the changes so there would be no public outcry, but the problems with the current map would be fixed.

I think a contest would be more fun, and would give nay-sayers more options. I lot of people dont want ANY revamp, so when we force them (lol) we should at least give them some choices/
Its revamp was the most grahpically pleasing but hte furthest from the origonal, which people didnt like.
I play Canada all the time and I like the revamp...I'm in favor as long as the rules remain the same on classic...Nothing wrong with updating the look.

Whatever "problems" there may be with the map, just fix it and dont change the map. Why does a map need to totally be redone every time someone says there is a small flaw with it. I like how the map is now. You don't have to start all over, just fix the "whatevers" and leave it alone. If you want a new map so bad make a new map and leave the old ones how they are.
