2008-11-11 02:53:03 - austex: my roomate when i lived there thought it was racist
2008-11-11 02:54:32 - austex: i'm a luk krung, so i guess i'm on the fence
2008-11-11 02:55:20 - austex: basically i'm thai until i open my mouth
2008-11-11 02:55:57 - austex: then i become a farang too
2008-11-11 02:59:18 - austex: i'm thai / american
2008-11-12 04:02:41 - steve066: hmm it could be self descriptive?

2008-11-16 16:04:05 - FarangDemon: austex, a friend of mine from England, with whom i just cycled this weekend, is offended by the word. I think it is ok to use in the general sense, like "farang can't eat spicy food" or "there aren't many farang here".
2008-11-16 16:05:10 - FarangDemon: in fact, i use it myself for these types of general statements about foreigners because "khon dtang dtang prathet" is a mouthful. But what I don't like, and I was exposed to it a lot this weekend, is people just pointing and shouting "farang, farang"
2008-11-16 16:05:19 - FarangDemon: when we cycle by their village.
2008-11-16 16:07:37 - FarangDemon: It's as if someone would make a big deal about seeing a black person and say "hey everybody come and look at this black person." I realize these people don't live in a multicultural environment so they don't understand about racial sensitivities.
2008-11-16 16:09:01 - FarangDemon: But common sense should dictate that nobody would want to be singled out as a public spectacle just because of their race. So I guess I can reproach them for it.
2008-11-17 05:50:53 - austex: well, that's what i usually do when i see a black person... lmao
2008-11-17 06:03:07 - austex: thanks, steve
2008-11-18 17:29:02 - steve066: lol
2008-11-18 17:32:33 - steve066: farang i found your description of your experience stunning
2008-11-18 17:33:41 - steve066: the level of ignorance and provincialism that mus t underlay that behavior is simply shameful
2008-11-18 17:36:25 - steve066: what century are those people living in?
2008-11-18 17:39:33 - steve066: did you get a sense of whether the shouts were to call the townsfolk to kill a witch or to witness an eclipse
2008-11-18 17:51:51 - FarangDemon: lol.... eclipse
2008-11-19 04:25:19 - austex: watch it steve, those are my ancestors :P
2008-11-19 04:26:26 - austex: tourists pay money to go on hilltribe treks
2008-11-19 04:27:26 - austex: kinda the same, but with out pointing and saying "hilltribe, hilltribe"
2008-11-19 04:29:32 - austex: i was definitely in awe when i saw those amazon indian pics
2008-11-19 04:31:02 - austex: the ones where they were in red body pigment and trying to defend themselves with spears from the helicopter
2008-11-19 04:33:03 - austex: if i saw them in person, i might actually point and say "holy shit, run!"
2008-11-19 04:36:47 - austex: not sure if they'd be offended or not... lmao
2008-11-19 16:43:43 - steve066: lmao
2008-11-20 13:13:14 - steve066: so farang it was more a sense of wonder/ unusual than horror ?
