1. INTRODUCTION

Atlantis (in Greek, Ἀτλαντὶς, "daughter of Atlas") is a legendary island first mentioned in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias

In Plato's account, Atlantis was a naval power that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before the time of Solon, or approximately 9600 BC. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune".

1.1 Why Atlantis ?

The more we thought about this the harder it is to explain why we chose Atlantis as a theme for our first map. so we thought we might as well explain why here

Atlantis to us is shrouded in mystery with a mythical history of warefare, prosperity and misfortune.
When you read the description of Atlantis as described by Plato in his Dialogue Timaeus and Critias, it describes a great civilisation made up of a great continent of many islands,

The description by Plato is detailed enough to envisage a map of the continent but vague enough to allow some artistic license.
It is this artistic freedom to use such a well known myth (Who hasn't heard of Atlantis?) and be able to adapt it as we saw fit that first peaked our interest more so than any other ideas we had hit upon.

So the idea was born and what you see now is the combination of Plato's classic description of a wonderful myth mixed with the vision of 2 new Cartographers within the boundaries of the CC gaming concept.

when researching it for a map we discovered that more than one great continent existed and each had a similarly matching history or Myth. (these continents have been used as the Continent names in nod to these other great civilisations)


2. GAMEPLAY

This section will break down how we have attempted to meet the requirements for Gameplay as defined by the CC Mods and Gurus

2.1 Balanced play

CC Definition : It should be unlikely that one or more players can start the game with a major advantage as a result of the initial drop or getting the first turn.

as we have included an interesting bonus structure and special attacks it seemed fairest to limit the initial player drops to the outer ring islands, this prevents (or at least reduces) the chances of anyone dropping a major advantage in the first time, this is further explained below


2.1.1 Player Starting Positions
All outer islands/territories are divided up amongst the starting players:

These would be broken down as such;

    2 players = 26 each and 1 random neutral
    3 players = 17 each and 2 random neutrals
    4 players = 13 each and 1 random neutral
    5 players = 10 each and 3 random neutrals
    6 players = 8 each and 5 random neutrals
    7 players = 7 each and 4 random neutrals
    8 players = 6 each and 5 random neutrals

2.1.2 Starting Neutral Positions

All non outer island territories will start neutral and values start as;

    Normal territories start at neutral 1
    Docks start at neutral 2
    Ports start at neutral 3
    Boats start at neutral 3
    Ys territories start at neutral 2 (ports are overridden as above)
    Temple entrances start at neutral 3
    Temple of Life/Temple of Zeus start at neutral 4
    Temple of Poseidon start at neutral 5



2.2 Reasonable bonus structure
CC Definition : Bonuses should make sense given the size/style of the map, and be based on a consistent formula.

We split each island into its own continent and ran the territory numbers through the semi-official number calculators that are available this ensures that we are accurate and fair the bonuses are broken done as thus:


The Continents and bonuses are set as;

    Kumari Kandam +5 armies

    Lemuria +6 armies

    Mariny +4 armies

    Thule +5 armies

    Lyonesse +4 armies

    Meropis +3 armies

    Santorini +4 armies

    Vineta +4 armies

    Númenor +5 armies

    Atlanta +8 armies

    Temple Island +3 armies
    This Continent consists of Omega, Pi and the 3 God Temples (Zeus, Artemis and Poseidon)

    Boats No bonus for holding boats (as revised in Version 22)

2.3 Game type flexibility
CC Definition : The map should support various game types and not be designed with specific/limited game settings in mind (standard, assassin, fog of war, 2 players, etc.).

Being players that prefer Team games we attempted to come up with an idea that will generally be aimed at team games but will work as single player too.
We believe we have done this by using the balanced play and bonus structure as described above.
the Gameplay itself leans toward a strategy battle in team games, by adding the bombardment ability from the temples, a Team that can disrupt other teams then get to and hold the temples will have the advantage. We believe this creates a strategic race scenario that fits with the myth of the lost isles of Atlantis and being the first person to discover the islands and get to the riches of their vast temples at their center.

Attack Routes
    Any dock can only attack its connected counterpart (as displayed by the dotted lines)
    Any port can attack any boat but not attack other ports
    Any boat can attack any port but not attack other boats

There are 3 special attack features on this map that add to the flexibility of the gameplay.
    Temple of Zeus (as identified by lightening symbol) can bombard all boats
    Temple of Life (as identified by the Ankh symbol) can bombard all ports
    Temple of Poseidon (as identified by the trident symbol) can bombard all docks

2.4 Player-friendliness
CC Definition: Any information you need to know to play a map should be easy to gather by looking at the map itself.

the map generally plays as any other map with few non passables other than the obvious sea which is only passable by clearly defined attack routes (Dock to Dock) and boats
Both of these elements of the map fit the seafaring theme of the map

- The legend should be clear and concise


A Direct use of simple text and graphical representation make the legend clear and concise as required

- The map should be free of unnecessary or cumbersome rules.


Although the gameplay may seem complex at first it is easily explained with a few lines and we believe our scroll legend fits the theme of the map and allows an understanding of the concepts at first viewing

2.5 Open-play

CC Definition : There should be many ways a game might progress on a map, and many roads to victory. Such features as impassable borders should enhance, not limit, gameplay, and every effort should be made to limit the number of dead ends and bottlenecks in a map, unless they are justified by the desired play of the map. The map should be fun to play, not frustrating.

As explained above (Section 2.3) there is a strategy/race style to the map but a straight forward all-out 'what for' will also work, it leaves it open to each player how they wish to approach the map and discovery which method best fits their playing style.

now to deal with the bottle necks, as described in the definition above "..every effort should be made to limit the number of dead ends and bottlenecks in a map, unless they are justified by the desired play of the map."

We have on purpose introduced at least one large bottleneck this being the only access to the Ys isle and therefore The Temples via the 4 boats, we did to increase the urgency to get control of this area and to make them another possible strategic stronghold when a strategy game ensues.



2.6 Function trumps form
CC Definition : The style of the graphics should not detract from ease of play: borders should be clear, titles and numbers easy to read, colors easy to distinguish, etc.

We have taken an open and laid back approach to the graphics of the map allowing the community as a whole guide us in the direction the map should go to best suit the gameplay we have been offering



2.7 Objectives Vs Open Warfare
The only win objective on this map is to destroy all other players by either strategically out smarting them or just outright pummelling them into the ground.
We did on various occasions look at adding an objective but believed that objectives is currently ( and this is not a criticism) to limited in the CC game engine and often detracts from a map rather than adding to it by forcing a game to end when Player X hold territs/ Continents until they start their next go,

Comment Nem: In my mind an objective map should be just that where the only way to win is to obtain and hold the objective this should mean that their should be no way of annihilating opponents and that everyone has a fair chance of winning from the start, this is difficult to get passed in the forum as a whole so maps need to counterbalance warfare with objectives and more often than not it doesn't work within the current limitations.



3. GRAPHICS

This section will break down how we have attempted to meet the requirements for Graphics as defined by the CC Mods and Gurus

3.1 Clarity of Image
CC Definition : Image must present itself as clear and legible.

This has been done by allowing and accepting as much community input as possible the only area we have held our ground a little is regarding the issue of Territory Names Vs Numbers.
This was done for very specific reasons which we need not go into in detail other than to say it was an artistic decision as it looked way to cramped when names were used instead of numbers & icons.
However, since Version 32 we have had discussion with community members about using Greek characters in place of the numbers. This was implemented but there may be some issues with displaying the characters in the drop down boxes. Our latest idea for Version 35 is to use the english translation in place of the symbols (alpha, beta, theta etc..). This would work as the greek names are rather short and will fit in nicely.

3.2 Image Sizes & availability
CC Definition : Both large and small maps asthetics must be to a presentable foundry standard and must also satisfy the community at large.

Both Maps have been available for a while and are of the following sizes
Large map 820 * 791 pixels
Small Map 620 * 591 pixels

These fit within the allowed map sizes as defined by CC


3.3 Accessibility
CC Definition: Cartographers must, where possible, reduce any disadvantage that can be caused to a colour-blind individual.

As both players involved in developing the map are involved in Testing software (which includes checking accessibility for color blindness) we have used our knowledge to develop a colour scheme that should fit within the boundaries of this requirement, if specific Issues are raised after quenching then these will be addressed as required.


3.4 Community input
CC Definition: All map makers are expected to take all graphical comments into consideration and must either accepted them or give sound reasoning as to why not to take particular advice

We have (as stated previously) taken and managed all comments from foundry visitors as openly an in defensively as possible to the point that our initial entry in the newsletter (14th Issue) describes our openness as;
Discussion on this map is taken well by the creators. Version 5.5 has come with input from our CC members.

Thanks Jesterhawk! Not sure we could do the centre island idea, but will talk it over with my XML creating team-mate.

I have updated the image slightly:

    Removed the penciled-in circle marks
    Slightly brightened the colour scheme as it was too faint (in my opinion)

More updates coming soon!

This has been the subject of much debate between myself and my team-mate. Currently the bridges idea is winning though.
What about a combination of both??

I will have a version 1.7 up tommorow morning (9.30am GMT).

Hopefully this will include bridges at least.

IMO use bridges from the center to the outer islands and ports from the outer islands to one another. You don't want a gigantic curved bridge from each outer island to another and the center is relatively close to the others.

I have updated the image to 1.8

Currently we are looking for a good combination of bridges and harbour ports. I have broken up the island so we can use bridges for smaller connections and harbour routes for longer connections. We are also in the process of creating small ships to act as territs on the water. We shall see how this goes, it may not be available until version 2.2 however.

i agree with this guy. looks fun so far, and it might turn out to be one of the popular smaller maps, like luxembourg or doodle. can't really comment until i found out about the bonuses...

This map has a very good concept! However, I really can't judge at this point. Just a few things:

-Do you intend this map to be a normal map or one with special objectives and bonuses?
-Visual appeal obviously needs work, but this is only the drafting room. ;)

Wait no longer DB bonus information is below!

Development Schedule
Version 2.5 is still in construction, a few changes are being made based on comments so it may be a couple more days before I can get it up for viewing.

    I am tempted to remove the minimap and show the bonuses differently but this may depend on space etc.. more information will follow about that.
    I am increasing the number of territs, a few people have commented that the map needs more territs (including Nemesischild :D )
    As per Kaplowitz comments, I am going to tone down the texture and see what I can come up with.

I HAVE MOVED EVERYTHING TO THE TOP OF THE SCREEN FOR EASY VIEWING!

Right have been looking at naming the Bonus areas on the map,
Thought it might be kinda cool to name each one after a mythical lost continent ?
Here they are:

* Kumari Kandam - Southern Outer Ring
* Lemuria - North Western Outer Ring
* Lyonesse - North Eastern Outer Ring
* Meropis - Inner Green Island
* Mu - Inner Red Island
* Vineta - Inner Blue Island
* Ys - Outer Temple Island
* Númenor - Inner Brown Island

Can someone please tell me if these are used in another map somewhere as some seem familiar, but I can't find them on any map in use.

I have had a look at your gameplay idea, I like it but I don't think it would work for our Atlantis map.
That said, it may suit our next map we have planned (assuming this one is successful), we may want to tweak it slightly as it seems quite complex. I shall chat with my team-mate and when the time comes we may approach you.

Version 2.5 is now available and shows off the map design, very little will be changing from now. All we need to add is the bonus information on the map. We are currently designing this and will post v3.0 as soon as it becomes available.

Having now seen the numbers on the territories on here I think they need a little rework / redoing completely
not sure exactly why I don't like them but I don't.
There will be an update to follow the last version, with new territory numbering

I agree Nem, I have been looking at this a few times. It still seems hard to see, but there is something else missing as well.

I also think we need to rethink the docks idea as I have worked out the bonuses and they seem far too high. This is because nearly every territory can attack any other territory. When putting this information into the bonus generator it increases the bonuses by a large jump.
I think we need to get together and rethink both this and the territory numbers.

If anyone has any suggestions to fix this please post here with ideas. Any help anyone can give is much appreciated!

This is a good draft.

I can't see anything on it to indicate what the region bonuses are going to be - assuming that the different coloured areas are going to collect bonuses?

The map feels big, almost for the sake of it. You're within the size restriction for the large, but you may struggle to shrink down for the small map, especially as you're going to need to put territory names on there somewhere too.

You've explained your attack routes on the legend, but I think the 'opposite docks' is confusing - particularly as they don't all face each other.

It's a good start, and I'm interested to see what happens to it.

For future reference, please could you add an updated image to the end of the thread, as well as the first post, as it helps people to follow the development, and will help people to tie comments to particular versions.

Yes, we have a minimap being developed to go onto the map as well. That will be ready tommorow I expect.

We are going to put numbers on the territories as done in Fuedal War. One of our more original drafts was much smaller but people complained it was too small with too few territories so we have expanded it. This also fits in with our idea of creating the large chain of islands that formed Atlantis (loosely based on Plato's description). I have shrunk the map down to within the smaller specs for testing and it seems to be ok, once we have the minimap on I shall post the smaller version as well.

I agree, this is something we are working on addressing for the next version.
