how come battle royale gales require a password nowadays? I haven't played in a few years

try again.

It may be because it needs you to log out and back in and/or finish a game before you can register

Joining directly from the Battle Royale page works, as joining through the standard game lobby requires a password. Make sure you are logged into your account when accessing that page.
