Maybe you didn't actually read what the new bill would require before posting?

Your quote above is what exists now under the law of the most strict states (who currently all run their own elections however they want), the SAVE act makes it significantly harder as drivers licenses wouldn't be accepted in 45 states (even the 'Real' ID's that everyone who wanted to get on a plane in 2025 just had to go upgrade to). You'd need either a birth certificate, passport, or military ID... which does make it harder for many people to vote, particularly poor people who've never left the US and don't just walk around with their BC in their wallets.

Beyond that using birth certificates in 2026 as ID is insanity. No images or ways to prove you are the person on the certificate, birth certs aren't standardized in the US so how would a poll worker even know how to check it's legitimacy.

I get the argument is to have people prove citizenship in order to register, and I take no issue with that.

But the plan here is clearly just to steal the midterm elections by changing the rules, and enforcing the changes before 45 states can figure out how to issue new drivers licenses that say 'citizen' on them somewhere by Nov of this year to 150 million voters.

You are correct, you need a drivers license to board a plane. Technically you need a DL that complies with the 2005 REAL ACT, the requirements of which were recently updated and as of May of 2025 you needed a compliant version to board a plane. It's worth noting that while military ID or passport would also get you on a plane, a birth certificate won't because it's not an effective way of identifying someone.

That same drivers license WOULD NOT be an acceptable form of ID to vote with if the SAVE act passes. Only 5 states currently offer 'enhanced drivers licenses', MI (congrats that's you!), NY, VT, WA, MN.

As far as I'm aware none of this is lies or even moderately controversial among people who bothered to read about the subject they are posting on before they post... I also never mentioned 'black people' once in my post, that's just you putting words in my mouth.

What countries have voter identification requirements?

I saw posts online saying voter ID requirements (demonstrating citizenship) in the US would disenfranchise college students and people who have changed their name, such as women or men who got married and changed their surname.

Those assertions, however, are not true.

89% of those age 18 and up have proof of citizenship documents.

9% have them but they are not readily available, such as college students who left them at their parent’s home.

Just 2% lack any documentation.

Of those who lack documentation, they are primarily age 18-24 – mostly in rural areas – and the very elderly.
(Data comes from surveys done by YouGov, Pew Research, Brennan Center for Justice, Cato Institute, a Reuters news article and the Good American Citizen Project)

Second, moving to college does not invalidate your identification. In fact, passports, Social Security cards and birth certificates do not have an address on them!

Third, changing your name does not invalidate past documents. All past ID documents remain valid. You might be required to provide a “linking document” that links your past name to your current name – this can be a marriage certificate or Court order regarding a name change. Here is the official US government statement on this: US Citizens/Lawful Permanent Residents name does not match documents

The above social media argument is based on the “false premise’ form of argument or “false assertion” by asserting that college students and those who change their name would not be able to vote. This is false.

I have no idea. The purpose of this post is to highlight that some of the arguments around voter ID in the US are nonsensical.

Half of US states have a photo ID requirement already, one quarter have an alternative ID requirement, and one quarter have no ID requirement.

Changing your name or going to college has no bearing on your ID documents, as falsely claimed on social media.

Many people don't have a copy of their birth certificate. I know get a copy. What ID do they require to get a copy of a birth certificate? Probably you DL or state ID. Back to square one.

So you don't have to prove who you are to be able to get info to prove who you are? Why can't they just go into voting precinct and give them that info?

Yeah, basically it does.

The Republicans are really good about whipping up outrage and anger, and angry people are more highly motivated to vote. When you raise the bar for voting, calm and placid people are more likely to say it isn't worth the effort. Angry people will still do whatever it takes. As voting gets more difficult, extremists and hotheads increase their representation, as more and more moderates just give up and walk away.

There are extremists and hotheads on both sides, of course; the Right has traditionally been a lot better at mobilizing them.

Asking for basic ID isn't a particularly onerous requirement. The reason for fighting it is not that it is, in itself, a big issue. Rather, when coupled with other nuisances (such as reducing the number of polling stations to make longer wait times) it is part of an overall drive to make voting more difficult.

100%, most states already require some form of state issued ID to register to vote. I think most americans favor having some form of identification to register or vote.

There are alot of moving parts here because elections are run by the states and not the federal gov't, and while the idea of the federal gov't just issuing it's own ID to citizens that would be valid for voting registration in all 50 states is totally doable and legal... they would have to give it away for free (24th Amendement says there can't be any 'poll tax' or financial barriers to voting which was enacted because in the Jim Crow era alot of southern states were able to prevent black from voting by attaching an expense to it). Republicans don't actually want to make it free and easy for citizens to vote, because none of this is about making sure only citizens vote so they are not even attempting to advance a bill that would just create a new form of federal ID.


What the save act does is basically invalidate the primary method most voters have used to prove their identity to register (state issued drivers licenses). Drivers licenses are not proof of citizenship in 45/50 states, so the bill then makes it so existing voter registration rolls are basically reset and everyone is going to have to go re-register with one of three proofs of citizenship, military ID, passport, or birth certificate... and they have to do it by whatever deadline each state has set to register prior to the election (some states you can just register when you vote, others the cutoff is weeks/months ahead of election day. Many states don't have a mechanism to even let you know if you are no longer registered to vote, and 8-9 months is not enough time for 45 states to 're-invent' their drivers licenses as proof of citizenship docs and then re-issue them to the 250million++ people in time for them to use it to re-register to vote prior to Nov.

TL/DR - Y'all are correct, this bill is about stealing the NOV 2026 election, and not about 'illegal aliens voting'. It's a short term issue anyway because by 2028 states will have ample time to get everyone proof of citizenship qualifying drivers licenses, or have the bill invalidated at the supreme court level for violating the 24th (24th is a very murky grey area that doesn't have alot of recent precedent)
