If he was the doctor and he claimed the role, he may have feared that he wouldn't have been believed. If he was believed, he'd be dead on night 1/2 (not sure how the number system works) because the mafia would target him. True, it would make the cop safer, but he may not have thought that far ahead. He figured he was screwed and didn't think beyond that or so I believe.
You can't really blame him though.

Good Luck town. I didn't claim because I thought it would just look desperate. Autoload claimed Cop in a previous game and got lynched for it. He WAS the Cop.
Anyhow, I tried my best. This was my 1st completed Mafia Game. Still fun as hell. Plan on watching how it turns out still.
