Waterloo is challenging, and once you learn it, a very entertaining map. Forbidden City on the other hand is a train wreck....that map makes my head hurt....a lot.

I'd have to agree to Conquerman, WW2 Ardennes and Forbidden City being lowly maps.

Forbidden City is an excellent map. The only problem with it being that games on it take forever to fill because people think it is confusing (for some reason I can't understand).

It is the path structure on the outsides. It is not intuitive at all. BOB is a must on that map.

We could go through and select which maps we want to appear on the gamefinder/gallery (that way each person could pick their own favorite 50, and players with minority interests aren't screwed). Then if you wanted to see more maps you could click "see all" and have the full gallery at your disposal.

This would be very nice, because users could select only 10 or 20 maps if they wanted and have a simplified maps screen. Alternatively, some users may like to play EVERY map, and they could still have the option of viewing them all at once.

We could even automate the process by having a button in your control panel which says "Show 10, 25, or 50 most played maps". There could be other options (most played by that specific user, most popular on the site, etc.) This could also be a good place to employ the map "categories" that have been discussed so much. Since not all users would be sorting maps the same way it wouldn't really affect the popularity of maps, and yet it would make map selection much friendlier for each user.
Now that is a hell of a good idea.

Agreed. Someone get that out of here and into the Suggestions forum. :D

Obviously I'm all for this as there is a script to do this already (been around for a while now).

I'm also for this as well but the term "most played maps" has not been defined so that a consensus has been reached. There was a recent thread where someone suggested this could be done easily from the game finder but this is clearly not practical given we are closing on 150 maps and the game finder results would have to be sorted. I think this needs to be defined and agreed first and then we have a better chance of completing this good suggestion.

Never mind the fact that older maps will TEND to have more games played on them than...less old ones. So game-finder results wouldn't necessarily be accurate unless some method of accounting for how long the map has been around was used.

Well, don't think there is any problem with the map list. At. All. Picke'em. Don't pick'em. A newt can't figure that out? 150 maps? 200 maps? So what. Not being snarky here, I just don't think there is an issue.

But what do I know...

Allow personalized filters (like PM inbox folders) that each member can set themselves.
Everyone would have a default BETA filter for when new maps come out. (cannot be deleted)
And if a person does not customize anything, the default filter is called ALL MAPS

Person A
  • -Geography
    -Abstract
    -Maps I HATE
    -BETA

Person B
  • -Small
    -Medium
    -Large
    -Complex
    -Clan Maps
    -BETA
Person C
  • -Maps I Like
    -Maps I don't
    -BETA
If we did this, then ...
  • 1) no one should have any issue with keeping all maps.
    2) Classification and filtering is up to each individual
    3) The map selection screen can be cleaned up
    4) We will all be happy.

Great suggestion - put it in the Suggs & Bugs forum.

Don't remove any. Make the "Start A Game" page have two boxes to choose maps from: one box for the most popular 30-40 or so, and a second box for the rest.

This is a great idea, it works for everyone. I would add one thing. Make a "sort by" button on the find a game page, that would allow for one of two options. Most played or alphabetical listing.

The issue is not the number of pickles we have... it's the size of the jar.
It's not the size of the jar - it's the writing on the outside that stops you seeing the pickles in the jar...

Sorting by 'most played' is a really BAD idea... if you sort by that then the most played will be even more played... thus skewing the sort in the favour of the currently most played - and new maps will be at the bottom of the list...

For proof of this - see Classic Shapes.

I still don't see why we can't just let everyone choose for themselves.

Hardcode the option to setup map selection filters per account. DONE!

No more complaining or hard to find maps and then the map selection screen can show thumbnails again instead of that horrible list option.

There will be a drop down list based on each persons filters (basic, hard, complex, large, abstract, WW2,etc)
When they pick their filter, the corresponding thumbnails will be loaded and they can choose accordingly.

That requires coding and effort. Removing maps is much easier.

:D True.

I say we just close up shop and then there is no need to fix anything.
Start a poll. ;)

We could even have a bunch of blank folders that we can name and drag maps into. I'm not a computer geek, would this be hard to do?

I would prefer them to come in categories though. This is something that will be more important for newcomers I think. When someone shows up and is trying to pick the map and it is just a list of 700 maps, they will never get to some of the best ones, and may end up picking the ones that are first alphabetically. I would love to see 5 or 6 categories.

top 40 most popular
Not so popular standard maps
Unecessarily large standard maps (world, boa, conquerman should probably go here too; its not complex)
Extremely small standard maps
Quirky maps (conquer4, crossword, etc)
Fuedal style maps (I know, this would need a better name, would include aor's, oasis, pelo wars, imperium, etc)
complex small maps
complex large maps (waterloo, supermax, ok conquerman can go here if you want)

Ok, that's 8, probably encompasses just about all maps. I'd prefer less, maybe we could put small and large together, same with complex maps. Some kind of classification is needed though, and I think personalized would be more work than most players would want to put into the site. It's like when you just want to play a game, the system asks you to create a player and a name and all that crap; you just want to play, not to work.
