I've never been convinced that British people are any more cultured or knowledgable than Americans. A country where The Sun is the best-selling newspaper and everyone is a monoglot can't be all that cultured!
BTW I can't recommend any better links than Wikipedia for British political parties, because not only do they have a page for each party, each page for each party actually contains a box at the bottom with links for all the major and minor parties. And it all seems pretty accurate & comprehensive.
If it was British news you were after, I'd recommend http://www.guardian.co.uk - it has a left-of-centre bias, but it's probably the fairest paper - but then I might just be biased myself!

Yeah we are greatly less cultured.. I had no clue british politics were so different until I took that test.vtmarik wrote:Well compared to the brits, we are greatly less cultured.Finsdale wrote:Were they attempting to constitute all Americans as being dumb, or what? I may not consider myself a genius, but I really don't think I'm dumb.
However, our judges don't stop people from wearing a specific kind of hat just because they were wearing that hat when they robbed someone. Anti-Social Behaviour Orders are about the stupidest thing i've ever heard of, and I've read the Raelians' books.

I was just wondering, kyle, in what particular way you were surprised to find British politics varied from American?
I have to say, that test you took - I could only plough through about 40 questions myself - it seems to ask questions on the minutiae of the parties' respective positions. That may be enlightening in a factual sort of way, but I doubt it gives much idea of why people in the UK vote the way they do.
Like, I vote (and donate to, and have membership of) Labour, but I agree with little of what the party does. I just feel I have to take a realistic position - and as things stand, the other parties will get my support over my dead body.

"We" Americans are less cultured than the British. They're humor, manners, and affectations are superior to ours.Joe McCarthy wrote:Whats this we shit though man? You flunked a test, "we" didn't.
However, we still kill more people than them, so I guess we win.

The issues that came up on the tests aren't common issues in american politics....Stopper wrote:I was just wondering, kyle, in what particular way you were surprised to find British politics varied from American?

I'd have to say that their humor is not superior to ours, since entertainment is a HUGE export for the USA. Don't get me wrong, they're awesomely funny, but I think "superior" is the wrong word..."equal" is probably more like it.vtmarik wrote:"We" Americans are less cultured than the British. As for manners...ummm....can we say...The Sex Pistols...it's all relative, brother.
Look what I bolded! Hell, let them be superior in affectations.af·fec·ta·tion Audio pronunciation of "affectations" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (fk-tshn)

More americans are entertained by drooling babies and people getting kicked in the crotch than by wise commentary and a keen eye for satire. That's how Gallagher made millions of Americans laugh by smashing a watermelon with a mallet while a comic genius like Bill Hicks could only do small clubs in the US.TitusFinn wrote:I'd have to say that their humor is not superior to ours, since entertainment is a HUGE export for the USA. Equal? You think our humor is equal? An American could never have come up with Monty Python. Compare the American version of "Coupling" to the British version of "Coupling."
Sure we get it right sometimes ("The Office") but most of the time it's the same formulaic sitcom over and over again.
Yeah, their affectations of civility and intelligence versus our affectations of fake breasts and even faker stupidity. You bring up the Sex Pistols, I bring up Ted Nugent. I love the man and his music, but he's not exactly the most mannered either. As for manners...ummm....can we say...The Sex Pistols...it's all relative, brother.

Personally, i'd rather talk to someone who pretended to be cultured than someone who pretended to be a 32DD while acting like Paris Hilton "because it's not cool to be a nerd."

for me voting is a complicated thing. BNP are just plain racist so they are out of the question. i hate conservatives and voting becomes more about keeping them out than getting some1 else in. i think green party hav the right idea but unfortunately wont get in because of their lack of policy and apparent knowledge of anyting other than the environment. lib dems are for grants which is good as i am planning to go to university. but labour are the only thing stopping the torries gettin in.
so there we hav it.
i think i will vote monster raving looney party. i quite fancy a 99p coin, a montain of butter and a canal of wine

Yes.. The issues are thatreverend_kyle wrote:Heres a question....
The test said alot of stuff about pension plans does someone want to recap what the issue over that is?
i found myself putting undecidedo n that alto..
a) Thatcher linked annual state pension increases to inflation & not the general rise in incomes, thereby making state pensions worth (relatively) less and less each year
b) Private companies and many parts of the public sector are pulling out en masse from providing decent defined benefit pensions for their workers,
c) Not many people make their own, sufficient, private pension provision (And why would they? Private pension schemes are shite, except if you're loaded.)
But luckily
d) No-one really gives a toss. Might die tomorrow. Who cares?
