France beat Paraguay 1 - 0 on a PK. Interesting game. France wins and moves on, despite rough play by Paraguay.

Odd that France got 3 Yellow cards and Paraguay got zero. BUT, France wins.

England beats Mexico in Mexico City 3 - 2, and play one man down (as did USA) for most of the second half. They face Norway, who beat Brazil. There have been lots of exciting action and games.

No surprise to anyone (who knows the game and isn't blinded by jingoism) that this was never going happen.
USA may get past Belgium, who were lucky to scrape through the last round, but I don't see them going any further. Time for the proper football nations to take over now.

Canada and Mexico are NOW OUT.

USA to play Belgium today.

Mexico lost to England 2 - 3, as I posted a bit earlier; Canada lost 0 - 3 to Morocco on Saturday.

Nice to see that Trump's latest attempt at bending the rules to suit himself did not bear fruit.
Infantino has embarrassed himself - hopefully he'll be booted out and we'll get someone stronger next time. Even Sepp Blatter, who was himself extremely corrupt, thought it was a step too far.

It's called Extra time, not overtime.

You know, you can edit your post so that the signature goes at the end instead a third of the way down it.

Apatheist, ConfedSs does not like corrections or suggestions on his style, font size, or spelling. He does not believe in editing, either; IT'S NOT important to ConfedSS to correct or even admit his errors. His signature placement? ITS importance is insignificant when he post stream of consciousness musings. This may save you some effort and frustrations.

Overall though, ConfedSs is a good guy and tries to make this website FUN and a good place.

And your spelling errors and ALL your Grammar and Punctuation errors are horrendous, to the point of OFFENDING anyone trying to merely READ your posts. And I won't address here your overuse of LARGE and HUGE Font size.

And I am NOT the ONLY one to offer negative comments on your STYLE of posting. I point out your errors and you get ALL PISSED and throw out insults by calling me Red Pen. At least you acknowledge that I am a professor. I care about:

a) good discourse,
bI how to express ideas lucidly and coherently,
c) how to support an idea with ACTUAL evidence, and
d) how to make cogent points to argue a specific idea or larger issue.
e) Most importantly, I try to listen and read to understand and get a better understanding of the world. I am NOT so blind or myopic to avoid acknowledging good arguments or ideas that I may not agree with INITIALLY.

It is obvious that ConfSS:

1) failed his class in basic grammar;

2) struggled in the classes in which writing skills are evaluated; (I do so in my science classes that I teach, btw);

3) any and all attempts to assist him in such matters have been ignored;

4) finding and correcting all such errors of ConfSS would demand far too much of my time;

5) despite all his writing errors, I comprehend his basic points.

Other than complain about the most egregious English (grammatical) errors by ConfedSs, I need not say too much more, RIGHT?

Back on Topic:

Argentina beats Egypt 3 - 2

Switzerland defeats Columbia 4-3 on PK, after a scoreless TIE at the end of Extra Time

Quite so.

Back at the world cup...are Americans going to lose interest now that they're no longer in it? Mexicans are avid football fans, but it's a much lower priority for USA and Canada, so will they still be paying attention?

The US TV Ratings will be much lower than for the game vs. Belgium. I watched some of the two games yesterday, but NOT the entire game for either contest.

Yes, there is less interest now that the USA Team is OUT. I doub that is unique to this nation.

Probably true, but the nations where football is the national game (or very high up) will have a much higher percentage staying watching after they go out. Some will support the team that knocked them out, others will want to see them beaten. Losing to the team that wins it is one way of lessening the disappointment; one can convince oneself that, with a kinder draw, one's country could have got to the final.

I suspect a lot of neutrals will want Belgium to win it, just to see Trump's expression when he has to present them with the trophy (assuming he doesn't manage to get them banned and the US reinstated). It occurred to me that there have been many powerful dictatorial hosts before, and while there are question marks over the bidding and awarding process, I don't recall any of them interfering in the actual tournament that way. The only comparable event that I can think of was Franco allegedly dropping heavy hints that he'd like to win the Eurovision Song Contest, which robbed Cliff Richard. From AI:
Cliff Richard’s song "Congratulations" is tied to a famous Eurovision Song Contest controversy from 1968, where the UK entry was the heavy favorite but ultimately lost to Spain's "La, La, La" by a single point.
A 2008 Spanish documentary alleged that the contest was rigged by the dictator Francisco Franco. The film claimed Franco's regime bribed European TV executives and judges to buy votes in a desperate attempt to boost Spain's international image and claim a cultural victory.
