Yeah, I hate the beach too. Unless it's at night and with friends. That's really great.

Ummm, ya. I can see the Atlantic if I go to the top floor in my work building. I try to take the kids to the beach at least once every week. And I'm talkin a real beach. Fine white sand, lots of sun, pina' colada's... TGIF!! I feel like I'm turning green from too much flourescent light.

Living in the West Midlands (as I did until I was 19) you soon get used to not seeing the sea very often. It makes it all the more special when you only see it once a year!
I probably only see the Gulf of Mexico once every year or two. I have seen the Atlantic Ocean probably fewer than five times even though I live closer to it.
I'm not really into beaches that much (my wife loves the beach). I enjoy getting away into the mountains.
I live in the Mid West, and I've only seen the Pacific Ocean once, when I went Hawaii. There, basically whichever way you looked, you would see the ocean.
I think a fair amount of Americans see the ocean pretty often considering how large the country is. For one thing, many of the most populous states and cities are on a coast: California, New York, Texas etc..
And of course Americans tend to have a enough money for vacations, and they usually take those in summer, so where better than the ocean?

The beaches you describe don't exist in Washington, parts of Cali maybe and most of the East Coast, so I hear. And that sounds like a rippin' time, I'd join ya if I could slip away for it.
Saw the movie Dagon a while back, supposed to have been based on a Lovecraft story. Never read any of the books, but it made for the creepest thing I'd ever seen. Beats those weak Stephen King films to a chunky pulp.

Ya, the pacific is cold and most of the beaches are rocky and not sandy. If yer ever in South Florida hit me up. The only problem with down here is we get no good concerts. No one wants to come this far out of thier way. We just get the crap mega concerts.
Lovecraft is nutty. All short stories. Usually set in early 20th century New England. Check out "At the Mountains of Madness", some creepy chit. Ive never been a huge King fan. I love Clive Barker though.
During the summer, Northern Cali isn't so bad, the ocean is still fridged, as it should be, but beware, wicked undertoe and rip-tides. Very few, if any, safe beaches to swim at.
Still, if a party was thrown, I try my darnest to show up. Getting fired withstanding .

I grew up in San Jose, CA, which is 45 minutes from Santa Cruz. The ocean there is beautiful. I now live across the lake from New Orleans, and the nearest beach is an hour's drive in Waveland. The Gulf Coast however is ugly, dirty, tepid, and my bathtub has more waves. You have to drive all the way to Forida for any decent beaches.

No matter how different we see things, it isn't fair that you're stuck with crap waters. If I want plasid water, that's what lakes and rivers are for.
