swimmer...have you read a bunch of stuff on mafia...that you were linked to??
Id also suggest if you have like an hour of spare time. Go to epicmafia.com and play some games...The mechanics are a little bit different....But it at least might give you the feel of how mafia is played. I have added you though....Its real simple...And I am sure people can help you out and not just lynch you day 1 for the newbie lynch.

Is there any more effective way of keeping people out of mafia than to eliminate them in the first round just because they're new?

That's very noble of you Batman, oh yes, I knew that the world's greatest detective would have the planning and foresight to hack the mod's databanks, cross correlate it with the random seeds of random.org and find out he's Batman ahead of time, since he's Batman and that's what Batman would do.
What you failed to realize is I am the smartest mind in the entire world, the one and only Riddler, AS the smartest man alive I, to whom no riddle is a mystery; of course figured out my role before LOVO even announced the game, prepared a second newbie just incase a newbie was Batman, and used him as bait for a my elaborate puzzle to unmask you!
