1. I want to try out a snow-themed map using Oasis-style graphics. It could include an ocean or not, doesn't really matter to me yet.
2. I also want it to have an objective that would actually be possible to take and win with (like the grand oasis objective on Oasis). The objective needs to be the primary way to win, because killing the other players would be too difficult to complete.
3. It needs to be a wide open map with lots of possible strategies and plans to try to win the game.
I got my Oasis idea from this thread, can you guys think of anything that fits the description above?
For the snow map specifically, maybe instead of oases, there could be heat sources, and a decay on most other regular territories.

its a snow villlage, that is at the bottom of a hill/mountain,
it is dangerous to go outside as you will b killed by the frost,
each player starts in their own "house" and has to make it out towards another "house"/resource pair, you loose X armies on each terit that is in-significant,
the objective will be to get to the top of the hill, to make this the easiest (yet still hard) would be that on the terits in-between each player, there would be a lake that has frozen over and is devestating to cross, and you loose about 10 armies per turn on their (10 is random),
(oh yeah every terit starts neutral apart from the houses, and the top of the hill starts with a lot of neutrals)
i think that would be quite cool,- not intended pun,
forget the image above thats crap
anyway that was my thought!

I still want some kind of story to build this map around, but now I think I've got the basics:
This will be some kind of combination of mountains and valleys (covered in snow and ice). There could be a couple smaller places behind the mountains, that have very limited access due to small mountain passes that get you to them. and a river straight down the middle of the valley to split things up.
But no falling rocks....
Warm places (houses, campfires, etc) keep you safe. everything else has a -1 decay on it because it's cold.
Safe places would be really rare and wouldn't offer much benefit to anyone. They would mostly just be there occasionally, forcing armies to stay out in the open. To counteract all of the decay, I could increase the minimum amount of armies earned each turn (at least, I think I could do that) or else just throw in a lot of small bonuses around the map.
I still need some kind of story to fit this. Oasis is basically a treasure hunt story ("capture the grand oasis to take the treasure and win the game") and I want something to go along with this one to make the gameplay more interesting.
and I'll probably name it Glacier or another ice name, with some nice icy font to go with it.

I somehow didn't read your post.... weird.
O well. The idea of crossing the ice is interesting. The only problem would be finding a good way to convince people to cross the ice. cause with the ice destroying a lot of your army, it would be pretty useless crossing unless it was to get something very major. Do you have any other ideas for objectives (that are easier than crossing a sheet of ice?)

Re: New Map Ideas Thread, Open! - Post Ideas Here
Hmm... maybe it's a scramble to get to the abandoned science station containing technology to control the weather?
Also, if you want an ice sheet, you could maybe simulate skidding by letting ice territories be able to take 2 or territories away (like the Waterloo knights)

nah i think it would be better if its for something better.... food? something that would be interesting to have on this map is those infected neutrals idea (where neutrals (at the end of EVERYBODIES turns) attack and attack until the neutrals cant attack no more)
I think i've got the main story (if i can work out the graphics)
Its big village in a snowy valley surrounded by impassable mountains. In the end of an unusually harsh winter, all the families in [insert village name here] have begun to fight for the last supplies of food. Each house in the village has a small amount of food (+2 or +3 per turn) and there his a huge stockpile of food in an abandoned fort to the north (objective). Capture the ENTIRE fort (Inner room, 2 outer rooms, 3 courtyard areas, and 2 wall territories) and hold it to get the food and win the game. (or the fort could give +20 because it has so much food, and then you have to kill the other players like normal)
So, only the main village area and surrounding territories get people started on them. to reach the fort you have to cross a big empty space (with neutrals on it). Villages in South, Fort in north. so you will essentially have to start in the village, stockpile food (armies) and then make your way up to the fort. a few caves along the way might offer some protection from the weather (which decays you -1 on all normal territories (excluding the fort walls, fort building, village houses, and caves))
This would be an interesting map to play. with the huge gap between the bonuses (all in village) and the objective (to take the fort), you would have to manage your armies very well. You need to save enough to protect your bonuses, but have enough extra to fight with them in the fort. It would be a big balancing act with your availible armies.
There would be lots of strategies, which is a goal for all of my maps. a few possible moves are:
stay in the village and take all of the +2s and +3s and beat your opponents there.
go up and take the fort normally after saving a few armies.
wait until player X attempts to reach the fort, then follow his trail of 1s he leaves behind for an easy path.
Build your defence to block the other players from getting to the fort.
cut the fortification lines of the other players, so he can't fortify anything from the village to the fort.
and much, much more.
Do you guys like the concept?

I'll try it out eventually.
Might be a while, though. It will definitely be something I experiment with.

I'm not a map maker, So i thought I'd throw this idea out there to see if anyone has ever thought about doing a map based on the ISS once it's finished.
You could have the space shuttle and Jules Verne in the image (One departing, one close to docking) plus you could have a section of the earth in the background for additional territories if required, with cape canaveral and ESA's main spaceport; Guiana Space Centre.

as a bonus (resouce pair) you could have next to each village OR for people to fight for in the middle - you could have some things like cattle, pigs, general animals, wood, anything like that to get extra armies?
i like the story

Food is the only idea so far that has sounded important enough if you are in the middle of winter.
Its a village, so they already have warm houses.... just food is needed.

i love the idea. the food is good, because everyone needs food, especially in the winter. "Glacier" seems like a fitting name as well. hopefully oasis will get finished soon so you can start on it

I think this would be a cool map:
it's the moscow (russia) metro system. the territories could be the different lines (colours)
the english way of saying it is hard to see, but it's there.
I was just wondering if it should be done or not... If i do it, i can read russian and am familiar with the system, so it would be easier... should i do it or no?

rocky, are those subway lines?
You might want to pass the idea along to whoever made Rail USA, rail australia, etc.
Its cairnswk, if I'm not mistaken. He's made the other rail maps, and this seems to be similar.
