What kind of music do I have to listen to between Thanksgiving and New Years if I want to leave my house?
Why is the governor of my state wasting his salary (tax money) by praying for rain? He can do that at home and actually work during the day to solve problems. I know it's a lot to ask for in an elected official, but it's a new concept I think they should try.
Those are just the less than obvious ones.
Theism is shit because it proposes a lot of unnecessary, messy conjecture.
Secondly you've only proved my first point that athiests feel the need to impose their beliefs on others, and don't even try to say I attempted to impose mine on you. I didn't ever state any of my beliefs in this little discussion. I just questioned yours.
Finally, I would just like to say that people like you give us athiests a bad name. I'm sick and tired of simple-minded bigots like yourself, of any belief, insulting and demeaning the beliefs of others. Atheists already have a bad name. How have I tried to impose my beliefs on anyone? I might be commenting on how well thought out I think a religionist perspective is, but I'm not forcing anything on anyone. It isn't even in my belief system that people who believe differently get punished, so there's a removal of that little bit of pretentiousness.
Care to explain how I'm a bigot? People can demean me (and I them) for political status, belief in bigfoot, or favorite music type, but we can't do it for something as arbitrary as religion? You're giving religion too much credit. If a person believes his dog is telling him to kill his neighbor, then hell yes I should do something about it. If they value holding concubines, you can bet your fucking ass I'm going to have an opinion on it. I'm not calling someone out for being black, or white, or something else they can't help. I'm calling them out on a choice. That's all religion is. I think it is wrong, and I think you're wrong for defending it.
No, you have not made a good point, so you didn't get through to me. Try again. I'm patient. I'll listen to your points. Will you listen to mine?
Oh, and I resent the simple-minded comment. That was uncalled for. If I were simple-minded, that would make you a bigot.

Well, aside from lumping all athiests together, you seem to feel that people should not state how they feel about other peoples beliefs. Strangely, though, from what I've seen on television the last month or so, our future president, along with a few other potentials, attack each others beliefs and even their moral character constantly.Grooveman2007 wrote:Secondly you've only proved my first point that athiests feel the need to impose their beliefs on others, and don't even try to say I attempted to impose mine on you. Admittedly they never brought religious beliefs into the discussion, but I hardly consider their beliefs about the nature of the universe separate from their beliefs about the nature of our country. What, exactly, makes the belief or lack there of in a creator of the universe immune to scrutiny?
Did you know that athiests can't testify or hold public office in Arkansas? Yup, if I was, say, beaten by police on a trip to Arkansas I couldn't fucking plead my case in a court of law. First of all, you started a topic on this forum that was called "There is no god..." Secondly, I'm not defending just religion, that's just the medium that I'm using. I'm defending people's right to make their own descisions with out being attacked for it. The examples of choices you made don't reflect the vast majority of religious followers. Most religions in this world speak of peace and kindness towards their fellow man. Yes there are some pshycopathic madmen out there who twist religion to suit their own agenda, but that's not a reason to attack every other religious person. Most people who follow a religion that I know are wonderful people, and I respect them for that. As should you and everyone else.
I apologise for the "simple-minded" comment. I meant to say narrow-minded, because in every post of yours that I've read about religion has been spent attacking it and refusing to take anyone of religious faith seriously
I'm open to, and welcoming of your responses.

Did you read the thread? I was being facetious. It had nothing to do with god. But I was aware of the possibility of insult toward theists and ignored it, for my reasoning above. I won't deny the right to make one's own decision (although I seriously question how many people's religion was a decisioin), but I disagree with your perspective on attacking people's decisions. Like I said, some decisions are bad, or wrong. If I make a wrong move, I want people to tell me. People have given arguments for religion, and I have yet to find one that cuts it for me. They all seem hollow. And I will tell them that. I'm not going to baby anyone. Unless of course, they are babies. In which case, you know...
Most people I know are religious, if I didn't respect them, I wouldn't have very many friends, for sure. But because I have respect for them, by no means implies I have respect for their opinions. Most of my friends know this, and get along just fine. Hell, they think I'm just as wrong as I think they are. I think the problem with posting on a forum is that it's difficult to express the tone of a statement. I've never gotten into a heated theological discussion face to face.

I have not seen a single atheist in my entire LIFE impose his beliefs on others. I have seen dozens upon dozens of families impose their beliefs on groups and other families which don't follow the same belief system.

You want facts?john9blue wrote:Lol @ Frigidus.
Anyway, let's face facts. Theists cannot prove that there is a God. Atheists cannot prove otherwise. If this wasn't true, nobody would be having this argument.
One thing I have noticed, though: the atheists tend to use a great deal of emotional appeal, rather than logical appeal. For instance:Backglass wrote:The truth that there is a magical man in the sky who nobody has ever seen, watching over us?
you assume that without magical gods a person can't give or help his fellow man. Next you will claim that I am deeply unhappy.
Then you believe in Leprechauns? Loch Ness Monsters? The Yeti? Chupacabra?
won't make magical gods real.
does not mean that magical gods roam the heavens.
That has to be one of the most back-assward excuses I have ever heard. It's your belief in legend, lore & stories of old that has already limited yours, my friend.comic boy wrote:we dont care a jot about your beliefs, worship God,hamburgers or pixies and we couldnt care less.

You can't compare God to things like guinea pigs and the Yeti. Those are finite beings which we already have preconceived notions about.
I'm willing to have a discussion, but I find it hard to argue with people who take science as their 'god'. They get on an intellectual high horse when dealing with people they consider to be 'lowly Christians', and start talking about magical creatures as if they were 6 years old. I know I'm drawing conclusions here, but your attitude is all too obvious. I regret that there aren't very many believers like myself who have both the ability and desire to argue at such great length, but you guys are turning this into a mud-slinging fest.
http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/2009
Pretty much ends this debate.
This is true. If you have religious beliefs, this is equally as true because you must accept that there is a HUGE difference between the idea of a godless universe and a universe with a god.Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion wrote:A universe with a God would look quite different from a universe without one. A physics, a biology where there is a God is bound to look different. So the most basic claims of religion are scientific. Religion is a scientific theory.
It's a scientifically testable theory of God. Maybe not that feasible, but you could do it.
The reality is that there is EXACTLY the same amount of evidence for God's existence as there is for fairies, giants, cyclopses, unicorns or whatever.
So given that there's plenty of evidence to prove 95% of the old testament as fallacious and none to support it, I choose to disregard the other 5%. As do many others.
As before, my case to prove this lies in the aforementioned etext. I'm not going to go through it for you, I'm not *that* well versed in evolutionary science to be able to provide you with all the answers. I'm sure there are plenty of evolutionary scientists that are but nowadays refuse to debate with creationists as it's like debating with scientologists - utterly pointless.
On a personal note - yes, I am exceptionally prejudiced....against people who believe, and more importantly propagate, rubbish. Not what I believe to be rubbish, what the *overwhelmingly vast majority* of (free minded) people believe to be rubbish. That is people who are given both choices (religion and science) and allowed to choose without prejudice.
